BlackBerry makes 9720 handset official with Curve-era specs and software

Image

No one can pretend it’s business as usual at BlackBerry, but for the moment the company is pressing on with new releases. Today marks the official launch of the heavily-leaked 9720, which actually takes the whole carry-on-regardless approach a bit too literally by sticking with BB 7.1 instead of the new (and nice) BB OS 10. The phone has a 2.8-inch 480 x 360 display (214ppi) above a “re-engineered” (but distinctly Curve-like) thumbpad, a 5-megapixel rear camera and 512MB of RAM. There’s also a dedicated BBM key to take you straight to the messaging app and the OS has been tweaked with a not-so-revolutionary onscreen button to make photo sharing easier. The handset is destined for Europe, Asia and Latin America “in the coming weeks” and ought to hit a much, much lower price point than the Q5.

Another Samsung flip-phone leaks out: the Hennessy, with dual 480 x 320 displays

Samsung Hennessy leaks out with dualscreen

In the realm of Samsung flip-phone rumors, color us confused. Earlier, we saw a manual on Samsung’s site for a Galaxy Folder (SHF-E400K), with dual 800 x 480 displays, a dual-core Snapdragon 400 CPU, 2GB of RAM, gold trim and LTE support. Now, we’re seeing a so-called Samsung Hennessy (SCH-W789), another dual-screen clamshell model with 320 x 480 resolution on both of its 3.27-inch screens, a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU, 5-megapixel camera, dual-sim support and, yes, a “Luxury Gold” color trim option. The latter model has leaked multiple times from Asian rumor sites, while the presence of a manual and photos for the Folder seem to all but confirm that model. We remain skeptical, though, as the sources may have mixed up the similar-looking models, and in any case they may never arrive in the US. If they’re real, though, we’ve obviously underestimated the size of the cognac-and-cigar throwback market.

DirecTV’s revamping its mobile apps with a focus on discovery, iPad is up first

DirecTV's revamping its mobile apps with a focus on discovery, iPad is up first

DirecTV’s added features to its mobile apps piece by piece over the last few years, and now it’s reworking them entirely. The first one to get a makeover is its iPad app, which is getting an update today with a new menu section to make browsing easier, plus TV Show and Networks filters to go along with the existing Guide and Movies options. It also has a revamped Watch experience that helps you filter out whether the content will play on the TV or tablet and even the information pages have a new look. Of course, other features that have been around like Facebook, Twitter and GetGlue integration, channel guide, search and DVR scheduling are still in effect as well. The update provides a more “cohesive experience across platforms”, which viewers can check out pictures of in the gallery below or judge for themselves once it hits the App Store.

BlackBerry Z30 listed as supporting Qi wireless charging

BlackBerry Z30 supports Qi wireless charging according to Wireless Power Consortium

Just before a smartphone turns up at the debutante ball, the internet comes alive with frenzied claims about what the new hardware will offer. While most of ’em turn out to be wishful thinking on behalf of whoever entered the data, we imagine that standards are a little stricter over at the Wireless Power Consortium. It’s there that a listing has popped up claiming that BlackBerry’s as-yet unannounced Z30 will support Qi wireless charging. The listing goes on to say that the smartphone will pack a medium power receiver, capable of pulling 120 watts from a charger, which should be enough to juice that (rumored) 2,800mAh battery in short order.

Apple’s official charger trade-in scheme will cover UK, Canada and Australia

Apple charger tradein scheme reaches UK 8 for a firstparty plug

When we originally reported on Apple’s replacement program for third-party USB chargers, we only knew for sure that it covered the US and China. As 9to5Mac has spotted, however, the official webpage for the scheme now lists a number of other countries in which Apple will start accepting trade-ins on Friday, August 16th. These include the UK, where an official first-party charger will be reduced to £8 (from £15) when you hand over a third-party charger you have concerns about — and some Brits will indeed have concerns, as local Trading Standards agencies have issued warnings about knock-off chargers posing a risk of electrocution. Australia (where a new charger will cost $14 AUD), Canada ($11 CAD), France, Germany (10 euros) and Japan (1,000 yen) are also on Apple’s updated list. Head to the source link to find your nearest participating store or service provider, and just as a quick heads-up: it’s one replacement per device you own (a store rep will record your serial number) and the scheme will end on October 18th this year.

Ultra Mobile brings 1,000 international minutes to all plans with Ultra Zero

DNP Ultra Mobile brings 1,000 international voice minutes to all its service plans

Phoning abroad just got cheaper thanks to Ultra Mobile pushing free international calling to all of its service plans. With Ultra Zero, even if you’re only paying $19 per month, you get 1,000 gratis minutes to call Canada, China, Mexico, Singapore and the UK. If you manage to use that up, it’s one cent for each minute thereafter. In addition to that huge chunk of voice time and being contract-free, all of the carrier’s plans include at least 50MB of 4G data and unlimited global texting. The company also cut its rates for calling Cuba, Haiti, India, Nepal, Nigeria and Poland by as much as half — you know people in those countries, right? As long as you’re rocking an unlocked GSM phone and slip in an Ultra Mobile SIM card, you should be able to reach out and touch someone for a whole lot less.

Path expands API access, now supports WordPress and other hand-picked apps

Path expands API access, now supports WordPress and other handpicked apps

Path has previously limited its third-party app integration to the Nike+ platform, but the company just opened its doors a little wider. App developers can now ask for permission to use Path’s sharing API, which they’ll get if Path sees such apps as a logical fit. To get the ball rolling, the social network has already granted access to 13 partners that include WordPress, Strava Cycling and a bevy of smaller image services. Only some of these developers can send app content to Path as of this writing, but the rest should support the API in the weeks ahead.

Facebook for iOS now integrated with OpenTable reservations and Rovi TV info

DNP Facebook integrates OpenTable reservations and Rovi TV info to its mobile Pages

Facebook has begun integrating OpenTable and Rovi TV guide information to its mobile Pages so users can now book a reservation and check out what’s coming on TV right within the social networking app. For the former, there’ll be a Reservations prompt located in the restaurant’s Facebook Page, underneath the address and hours of operation. Simply pick the desired date, time and party size, and you can book a table in seconds. The Rovi integration, on the other hand, provides information on upcoming episodes of your favorite TV shows so you’ll know exactly when and which channel it’ll be on. The OpenTable and Rovi integrations are live right now on the mobile web as well as in the latest iOS app update, which also lets you tap and search for hashtags. iOS users can go ahead and get it from the source link below, while Android users will have to sit tight for now.

Facebook to acquire speech recognition startup Mobile Technologies

Facebook to acquire speech recognition startup Mobile Technologies

Facebook may not seem like an obvious match for a machine translation company, but its just agreed to snatch up speech recognition startup Mobile Technologies to strengthen its chops in the area. If you’re not familiar with the outfit, they’re the minds behind the Android and iOS app Jibbigo, which translates your text or dulcet tones into other languages. While Zuckerberg and Co. haven’t revealed precise plans for the freshly-acquired firm, they note that the voice tech factors into their long-term plan for the web and mobile devices. “Voice technology has become an increasingly important way for people to navigate mobile devices and the web, and this technology will help us evolve our products to match that evolution,” said Tom Stocky, Facebook’s Director of Product Management. “We believe this acquisition is an investment in our long-term product roadmap as we continue towards our company’s mission.” There’s no word if Jibiggo will still receive support once Mobile Technologies joins the social network in Menlo Park, but we’ve gotten in touch with the team to find out.
