Kristoffer Koch of Norway spent $27 on 5,000 Bitcoins in 2009 as research for a paper he was writing about data encryption. He turned in the paper and promptly forgot about the purchase. Four years later, Koch noticed Bitcoin making headlines as it peaked at $266 per Bitcoin. He logged in to his Bitcoin wallet […]
Four years ago, Oslo-man Christopher Koch’s girlfriend scoffed at his purchase of $27-worth of Bitcoin. Chances are she was singing a decidedly different tune last April, when Koch checked back in on his investment and found out it was worth $886,000. And over a cool million today.
This R2-D2 bank is your new astromech savings and loan unit. R2 will help you save your money. Plus, he’ll talk your ear off each time you drop in some coins with his usual bleeps and whirrs – which in this case translates into, “You are one step closer to affording that new life-sized Stormtrooper toy, Master”.
As far as I’m concerned, this little droid beats any federal stimulus package. He measures 7 1/2″ high x 5 1/10″ wide x 4″ deep, and uses 3 LR44 batteries, which are included so you don’t have to spend any of your hard-earned change to get him beeping.
The sound quality seems pretty much on the money. The R2-D2 bank will cost you $21.99(USD) from ThinkGeek. Think of it as a long term investment as R2 will help you save way more than that. Is there anything this droid can’t do? 3PO seems so useless. You never hear about him helping anyone, unless they need some language translated or a lesson in etiquette.
Some people spend more than what they can actually afford. A lot of financial advisers recommend keeping a list of every purchase, so that each expenditure can be reviewed afterward. Most people start out okay but eventually forget a few days later.
An alternative? Level.
Level is a lightweight budget management app that links to the user’s bank account. Once it’s hooked up, the app will then calculate how much the user can spend in a day given their income. It shows the “spendables” left for the day, keeping users in check before they swipe their card or buy something that they don’t really need.
The cool thing about Level is that it also automatically detects fixed expenses. Over a hundred top banks in the US are supported by Level, so you’ll most likely be able to find your institution on the list.
Level also recommends and encourages saving, and we all know that’s not a bad thing. The app is available for free from the iTunes App Store, and an Android version is currently in development.

A collection of firms – including Apple – have until this announcement from the Irish government been able to push profits through Irish subsidies from overseas to avoid paying taxes on said profits. An announcement this week from Ireland suggests that Irelands Finance Minister Michael Noon is not about to let this continue. The “ghost […]
T-Mobile has announced that its Simple Choice plans will now come with free international data and texts. That sounds amazing, but in reality how much will it actually save you compared to carriers like AT&T, Sprint and Verizon?
The numbers are in for the launch of Rockstar North’s and Take-Two Interactive’s video game Grand Theft Auto V. The numbers show that during the first 24 hours of availability GTA V had sales of more than $800 million worldwide. That was enough to make it the best selling game in the first 24 hours in the history of Take-Two Interactive.
The $800 million haul also made GTA V the fastest selling game in franchise history. The game launched on September 17 for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 game console. It’s also worth noting that sales tally doesn’t count Japan and Brazil.
As always, GTA V has polarized critics who blame game for inciting violence among children and ruining morals around the world. It certainly hasn’t stopped gamers from buying the game in droves.

This week the folks behind Diablo III‘s development and upkeep have announced that they’ll be cutting their ill-fated auction house from the equation entirely. As Blizzard suggests, both the Gold and the Real Money auction houses will be cut from the game from top to bottom in the month of March, 2014, after a rather […]
Android users, this is where you unashamedly stick your tongue out at iOS loyalists while making childish noises with your lips. (In your fantasies, at least — that’s pretty rude to do in real life.) The Google Wallet app for Android has just been revised, with users in the United States told to expect it in phases throughout the week. One of the biggest additions is the ability to send cash on the go to any adult in the US with an email address — as is the case in Gmail, sending money directly from one’s bank or one’s Wallet account is free, while the usual fees apply if you’re dinging that credit card. Plus, if you’re still waiting for the option to send money in Gmail, just using this app once will automatically enable that.
Moreover, the app is doing its darndest to replace Key Ring, allowing individuals to load loyalty cards of all types directly into the app. In theory, this should cut down on how much plastic you have to carry around, but we’ve still seen stores that have a heck of a time scanning a digital rewards card. If you’re into saving money, Wallet now holds offers from Maps, Google Search, Google+ and Google Offers, and we get the impression that the company will be allying with a number of merchants in the near future in order to make this particular tidbit more attractive. Head on over to the Google Play Store to see if the new build is showing up for you.

Superman 75th Anniversary Coins from the Canadian Mint: It’s a Bird, It’s a Coin!
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe have Presidents and other historic figures on our coins, but what we really need are superheros. The Royal Canadian Mint understands this and they are releasing a series of seven different Superman coins to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Big Blue Boyscout.
They look pretty awesome. Usually I find Canadian coins to be silly looking, but now I want some. Most of the coins range from $30(USD) – $130(USD), but there’s also a $750 gold one if you are a super fan.
Next we need a Batman paper dollar. That would make me happy. In Batman and Superman we trust. That’s currency I can get behind. Hit the link to see the full collection.
