Dell releases new S Series monitors with edge-to-edge glass, IPS panels

Dell releases new S Series monitors with edgetoedge glass, reasonable price tags

Dell’s built quite a reputation for delivering solid monitors at reasonable prices, and it’s now expanded its offerings in a fairly big way with no less than five new S Series models, some of which boast edge-to-edge glass and/or IPS panels. On the top end is the 27-inch S2740L, which has the most connectivity options of the lot (DVI, VGA, HDMI and a pair of USB ports) and, of course, the highest price tag at $400. From there, things drop to $300 with the 24-inch S2440L (the only non-IPS model of the lot), and go all the way down to $200 for the 21.5-inch S2240M — the three lower-end models ditch the edge-to-edge glass but still retain minimal bezels. Unlike some of the company’s higher-end UltraSharp models, though, all five monitors have a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 16:10, and you’ll get a standard 1920 x 1080 resolution regardless of the size you choose. Complete specs for each can be found at the links below.

HP’s 24-inch x2401 monitor is just 11mm thick, arrives in November for $249

HP's 24inch x2401 monitor is just 11mm thick, arrives in November for $249

It wouldn’t me a seasonal HP product launch without dozens of PCs and at least one monitor, right? This go-round, the company is launching the x2401, a 24-inch, 1080p display with a slim, 11mm-thick frame. Though the last two monitors we saw from HP were IPS, this one makes use of MVA technology to help ensure wide viewing angles. If you’re looking to add a display to your setup, this one has a DisplayPort socket and HDMI-in. (You can also mount it to the wall, if that’s your bag.) Expect it to arrive on November 7th for $249. Additionally, HP will sell a business-oriented version, the L2401x, the main difference being that the commercial version has a three-year warranty, instead of one. Not bad, considering the business version costs only ten bucks more.

Sharp’s IGZO low-power, high-res display technology gets its time to shine at IFA

Image

Alongside the slew of 90-inch TVs, Sharp also used this year’s IFA to show off something a little less glamorous. Its IGZO technology (that’s indium gallium zinc oxide, kids) was developed in conjunction with the Semiconductor Energy Laboratory. According to Sharp, the displays “have a significantly higher translucency [compared to traditional LCD TFT displays]. This improvement means that smaller or fewer LEDs are needed for the backlighting.” The result is less power consumption for high-res displays and higher sensitivity on touchscreens, with far less noise to contend with.

The company plans to create three panel sizes to start: 10-inch (2560 x 1600), seven-inch (1280 x 800) and 32-inch (3840 x 2160). Sharp was also demoing a prototype seven-inch tablet (which you can see in the gallery below) alongside the displays. The representative we spoke with wouldn’t reveal anything about specific products the company plans to produce using the technology, but did tell us that we can expect to see some IGZO products in 2013. Check out an explanatory video after the break.

LG’s EA93 29-inch display features 21:9 aspect ratio, we take a look at IFA (video)

It’s alive! We spotted a powered-off version of LG’s latest monitor earlier in the week, but now it’s loaded up with content and ready to make its formal debut. LG’s gone big — very big — with some of the showings at its IFA booth. But in addition to the massive 84-inch UD 3D TV and the 55-inch OLED HD TV, it’s also showcasing some more modest displays. The company announced its 21:9 aspect ratio monitor, the 29-inch EA93, just prior to IFA. The IPS monitor boasts a WQHD resolution (2,560 x 1,080 pixels) and supports four-way split-screen view. The wide-screen aspect ratio is the same you’ll find at a movie theater, making it an ideal choice for viewing Blu-ray flicks, and LG’s framing the EA93 as a choice setup for photographers and other multimedia pros, too.

LG had a half dozen of the displays on hand at its IFA 2012 booth playing content in a loop. One station demonstrated cinema playback with a trio of recent film trailers, while other demos included a stock-tracking layout, side-by-side browser windows and the Windows 8 screen you see above. Speaking of that latest Microsoft OS, the EA93 is perfectly suited for viewing extended layouts, giving you direct access to even more tiles simultaneously. We couldn’t accurately judge sharpness, as the pre-recorded screens didn’t appear at full resolution, though colors did appear bright and accurate. The chrome stand complemented the black finish nicely, while a multitude of ports on the back enabled USB 3.0, HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI connectivity. You can grab an up-close look at both sides of the 21:9 monitor in our gallery below.

ASUS Designo MX279H and MX239H Monitors revealed

The folks at ASUS have brought on a couple new monitors for the IFA 2012 crowd, both of them inspired by sundials and made with matte anti-glare IPS technology for fabulous visuals. The ASUS Designo MX279H and MX239H Monitors revealed today work with LED backlighting as well and both have massive 178 degree viewing angles with super slim profiles at 14.5mm and 17.5mm on the MX239H and the MX279H respectively. The smaller model has a 23-inch screen size while the larger has 27-inches to its name.

Both monitors have lovely edge-to-edge bezel-free screens so you can appreciate the entirety of your picture with no distracting borders. With the sundial-inspired design of both monitors, you’ll have the least amount of space taken up with the most dedicated to the display itself. The picture you’ll be working with is backed up by full HD visuals with no less than dual-HDMI inputs on both models.

Both models also have ASUS SonicMaster technology for great audio quality as well. Co-developed with none other than Bang & Olufsen ICEpower audio, you’ll be rolling out with undeniably fabulous audio popping out straight from the monitor itself. You’ll find that both monitors have lovely simple black backs with a Y-shape down toward the imputs they both share, and both units also have a simple set of controls on a silver base sitting under the display.

These units do not yet have release dates or prices at the moment – they along with a whole lot more have been revealed at IFA 2012, and we’re live in effect all week long in Berlin to bring you the action: stay tuned!

ASUS Designo MX279H and MX239H monitors are slim, inspired by sundials

We’d wager that “inspired by sundials” isn’t a phrase you expected to hear at this year’s IFA, but there it is, in the press release for a pair of new monitors from ASUS. The Designo MX279H and MX239H have edge-to-edge screens, largely free of worrisome bezels and slim profiles at 14.5- and 17.5 millimeters, respectively. The displays are matte IPS, which offer up a 178-degree viewing angle, according to the company. And the stands — they’ve got “sundial” written all over them. Peep the press release after the break.

LG EA93 21:9 aspect ratio 29-inch LCD spotted on IFA show floor (eyes-on)

LG 29inch EA93 219 aspect ratio LCD spotted spotted on IFA show floor

Fancy a wickedly wide 21:9 aspect ratio LCD that’s more than a touch larger than what you’ll find on that unique Toshiba Ultrabook? It looks like LG’s got you covered, with its 29-inch EA93. We spotted a half dozen of the ultra-wide IPS displays during a preview of the show floor at IFA, and were able to grab a few frames. You need to see this LCD in person to get a feel for just how wide it really is — with a 29-inch diagonal panel that’s incredibly short and squat, you’ll be compromising quite a bit of desk real estate in order to add some horizontal pixels.

From booth materials, it seems that LG is promoting this product as a multitasking solution — the format is well-suited as a replacement for dual-monitor rigs, letting you view several windows at once without adjusting your eyes vertically. We already had a solid grasp on the EA93’s specs, which include a 2,560 x 1,080-pixel panel, a four-way split screen feature and plenty of inputs, including two HDMI ports, DVI Dual Link and DisplayPort, though the product placard also revealed USB 3.0 connectivity and 7-watt stereo speakers. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but if you’re prepared to add such a device at any cost, we’d suggest clearing some desk space now — these are set to ship in November.
