Leaked Video Highlights Moto X Software Features, Including Always-On Voice Commands

Motorola’s secretive Moto X smartphone has been spotted in its fair share of photos (leaked and otherwise) this past week, but there are only so many thrills to be derived by looking at still images. The folks at Ausdroid got their collective hands on a short demo video from Canadian wireless carrier Rogers that affords us our best look yet at what Motorola’s first post-acquisition phone brings to the table when it comes to software.

One of the earliest and most persistent rumors about the Moto X (or the X Phone as it was known) was that the device would always be listening for voice commands. The Rogers video confirms that is the case, and that the command “OK Google Now” is all it takes to rouse the phone and prompt Google’s proactive data surfacing service. Curiously, yet another leaked video shows another Moto X reacting to the “OK Moto Magic” command instead. At this point it’s tough to say if the change in activation commands is a regional software difference or just a holdover from earlier stages of development.

Also onboard the X is a new visual notifications scheme that doesn’t rely on an embedded LED — the video notes that “information quietly appears” on the display in the form of icons that seem to help users differentiate, say, Facebook messages from standard texts. Users can also fire up the X’s camera by vigorously whipping their wrists while holding it, though it’s unclear whether or not we can redefine that action to launch different applications. Once the camera is up and running, users can tap anywhere on the screen to snap photos, or hold their fingers down to enable a burst mode of sorts. It strikes me as a much savvier approach to operating a camera than what Google does in stock Android Jelly Bean, and hopefully those tweaks make the leap from Moto exclusive to stock Android staple.

Curiously absent from the video is any mention of the customization options expected to be part of the Moto X experience. Canadian customers can pick up a black or white X starting in August, and I suspect those in the U.S. will be able to pick up their non-tweaked models from multiple carriers around the same time. As it happens, engravings and colorful plastic backs may not be the only design choices Motorola will leave up to its customers — AndroidAndMe’s Taylor Wimberly (who’s had a generally solid track record with Moto X reports) says that wood trim may also be an option when the device launches this summer. Really, the only thing this torrent of leaks hasn’t turned up yet is a price tag, but at the rate things are going I wouldn’t expect that last tidbit to stay a secret for too much longer.

The Moto X Will Always Have Its Ears Peeled According To A Leaked Video

The Moto X, Google and Motorola’s heavily advertised yet mysterious love child, has been out and about lately. And now a video from Rogers, a Canadian wireless provider, shows the Android phone’s ambient listening feature, potentially called "Open Mic," which will allow users to give the phone voice commands without activating the screen.

Verizon Moto X leaked in image ahead of launch

The Verizon Moto X handset has made an appearance in an image received by the folks over at Android Central, in which we see a Nexus 4-esque black handset with the new Motorola logo up in the left corner. This follows a roadmap that leaked yesterday showing the release date of the handset on Verizon (as well as the HTC One).

verizon-moto-x

The image is tagged on top with a “Not for sale” stamp and a “Motorola confidential property” stamp on the bottom. There’s no Verizon branding on the handset, but the source of the image says that it is the handset destined to be offered from Verizon. Overall, the phone isn’t very large, and looks quite a bit similar to the Nexus 4.

We also get a look at the Android software running on it, of which there is only one really notable portion. As the folks at Android Central point out, a careful look at the keys on the bottom of the screen reveals that the background behind them is transparent. This is a change up from what we currently see, and could indicate anything from a customization specific to the phone to a newer version of Android being on it.

Aside from that, what we see are some large bezels at both the top and the bottom of the screen, as well as the generic black color that will be offered on the handset (in addition to white, it is said) available from carriers. The customization options, of which they’re rumored to be numerous, will be available to those who order online with their own selections.

According to the leaked roadmap, Verizon will be launching the Moto X on August 23, giving us a bit over a month left in waiting. It is possible Motorola will be revealing the device well before this date, however, especially considering the number of leaks that have surfaced concerning the device. For more information, check out the timeline below and the Moto X tag portal.

Moto X and the details you need for an ideal launch

The next Motorola smartphone launch, the Moto X, is going to be massive. There’s very little we haven’t heard – or cannot guess – about the machine that’s just this week appeared in the hand of Google’s own Eric Schmidt. While we’ll be going over the suspected specifications of this device here in this article soon, right now the most important bit of information for you is this: Google will be backing this machine from start to finish.

heromotox

With Google supporting the release of this machine, several things will certainly be true. The first is that Motorola will have a level of support and visibility in the market that they’ve not had since the height of Verizon’s “DROID” line. And what’s more, while Verizon had a contract with Motorola for that release and continue to have a licensing agreement with Lucasfilm for that name, Google owns the operating system inside the Moto X.

So Google owns the software as well as the hardware, having secured their ownership of Motorola long enough ago that they’re through with their scheduled creations still needing to be completed before Google could have a real hand in the process.

Though Motorola and Google operate separately, and indeed one does not communicate on every single level with the other, Google will be supporting the launch of this phone. This device will have a backing unlike any Android phone has had before it – unless you count Samsung, of course.

But even Samsung, with their Galaxy line of smartphones – the most popular line of Android devices in the world – still have a barrier that a company like Apple does not. Apple owns the software and the hardware in the iPhone. Now that Google owns the smartphone hardware manufacturing process with Motorola and the software that runs in it, we’ll get to see what it’s like for Apple to finally have an opponent attacking from the same angle – more or less.

The Moto X itself will be appearing with modest specifications. According to an amalgamated set of rumors, tips, and inferred truths from the leaked images of the machine that’ve appeared thus far have shared, the Moto X will exist as follows:

• 4.3 OR 4.7-inch display with 720p resolution
• Customizable Body
• Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR
• 4G LTE for multiple carriers (Verizon, AT&T, possibly T-Mobile)
• Wi-fi 802.11ac
• Stock or near-stock Android (with minimal carrier-added software, if any)

The styling of this device will be – is – guaranteed – to match that of the first image in this post. It’s a photo of Eric Schmidt, co-founder of Google, and it matches leak after leak of the device as it’s appeared from factory floor photos in multiple colors. We’ve seen green, bright pink, light purple, and both black and white up front.

The full “taste the rainbow” collection will likely be based – at least lightly – on the Motorola logo updated earlier this month. There you’ll not be seeing black, white, or gray, but they’re rather good bets if you’re betting.

The machine is coming in both a flat, solid bit of soft plastic and a more textured edition as you’ll see Schmidt carrying above. Exceedingly thin, this machine will be aimed – as most Motorola phones are – at being robust, as well. You wont be complaining about scratches to this device any time soon (at last to the back panel), while the front will still need to be made with some form of reinforced glass or the other.

The actual final release of this machine will likely be coming somewhere in the latter half of August. According to a Verizon roadmap, the big red version of the machine will be appearing on the 23rd of August, while the announcement for the phone could take place far closer to the end of the month we’re in right this minute.

Sound like a solid release, based on what you’ve read? Are you ready to pick a color and texture – not to mention engraving – for the back and front of your phone yet, or are you still deciding if it makes sense to move away from a top-tier smartphone to join the Moto X party? Or could it be that this machine isn’t aimed at early adopters, but the everyman instead?

Moto X publicly dogfooded by Google’s Schmidt as leaks increase

Rumors of Motorola’s upcoming smartphone are heating up. Currently known as the Moto X, the device has been the victim of numerous leaks and speculation over the last several weeks, and today we’re seeing yet another addition. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt was spotted using a mysterious device that we can only suspect to be the Google-owned Moto X device.

Business Leaders Meet In Sun Valley, Idaho For Allen And Co. Annual Conference

At the annual Allen & Co. business conference yesterday, Schmidt was seen using a mysterious device that looks a lot like Motorola’s Moto X handset, based on the handful of image leaks that we’ve seen so far. The photos of Schmidt using the phone are highly detailed, allowing us a good look at the device that he doesn’t appear to be keeping on the down-low.

The model that Schmidt is using appears to have a slightly glossy rear white shell with a curved shape. The camera module and LED flash are placed prominently in the center of the device toward the top, with what looks to be the speaker directly next to the camera. We also see that the headphone jack is dead center on the top edge of the device, rather than on one side or the other.

As for the front of the device, it appears to be a solid slate of all black, but we can’t get a good look, seeing as how Schmidt’s ear is enveloping most of the phone. The volume rocker and the power button appear to be situated on the right edge of the device with thin chrome buttons. The edges of the phone look really thin, while the center is a bit thicker with its curved look, which is a rather unique shape for a smartphone these days.

The photos of Schmidt using this phone match up almost perfectly with the latest image leak of the device that shows a black matte model. It has the same curved rear shell with the camera module mounted in the same location, as well as the centered headphone jack on the top edge. One thing’s for sure: this phone exists, but the only question is what will it be called officially? And when is it arriving?
