DROID Ultra Review

Motorola Mobility scored big when they teamed up with Google. If it wasn’t evident enough in the Moto X, then certainly Motorola’s newly optimized experience is ready to shine in the DROID Ultra, the first of three devices coming from Verizon in their newest exclusive brand lineup. If the DROID RAZR HD took the original […]

DROID MINI official as successor to RAZR M for Verizon

Verizon has this week delivered a full set of DROID devices, including the DROID Ultra, DROID MAXX, and DROID mini as successors to the DROID RAZR HD line on the market since last year. The smallest of these is the DROID mini, of course, working with an August 20th release date and a 720p LCD display.

This device works with the same computing power of its larger relatives, that being a 1.7 GHz Dual Core processor with Quad–Core Graphics paired with Motorola’s x8 mobile computing system – which we’ll certainly be detailing at length later today. For now you’ll be interested to know that this device works with the same hardcore body as the rest of the DROID line, kevlar back and all.

Inside will be 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and Motorola’s ever-so-slightly modified bit of Google’s mobile operating system. We’ll see soon how this compares to the Moto X, a device that’ll be working with a rather unique look at Android, Google style.

This device will be appearing alongside the DROID Ultra and DROID MAXX later this month at a cool $99 USD with a two-year contract while the larger devices will add a hundred bucks for each level. You’ll find red accents through the series while the main color utilized here will be straight up textured black.

Verizon event July 23rd: DROID reboot on tap

It’s time again for Verizon to bring the re-up – an event has been scheduled for the 23rd of July, 2013 likely set for a set of new DROID devices. What we’ve seen in leaks thus far suggests updates to the Motorola DROID RAZR HD, RAZR HD MAXX, and RAZR M devices, each of them coming in with a bit less “RAZR” to their name and a bit more on the DROID side – brand-wise.

IMG_7012

The invite suggests that Verizon will indeed “unveil the next generation of one of their most popular family of devices” – how much more obvious could it be? We’re in a place at the moment where keeping this secret isn’t paramount to the success of the line, as it were, while the Moto X hides in the wings.

verizonhtcone-1

We’re expecting the Motorola hero smartphone to make its debut not long after this line of DROID devices, coming to Verizon right along with the three-device lineup. This is odd for Verizon, a company that will go so far as to delay the launch of a smartphone for months just to make sure its predecessor gets enough airtime. See: the HTC One.

The Moto X will be coming with a lovely collection of next-generation abilities straight from Google, while the DROID lineup we’ll see sooner will have a much more Verizon-tuned software experience. Stay tuned for the full run-down!

Verizon Nokia Lumia 822 and DROID RAZR M get new colors for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and there’s no better time to get that special someone a new smartphone than now, especially since Verizon is launching a couple of new colors tomorrow exclusively on two devices. Motorola’s DROID RAZR M will come in pink, while Nokia’s Lumia 822 will be hitting it up in red.

pink-razr-m-2-540x540

Yes, folks. Verizon will be offering the DROID RAZR M in a pink variety starting tomorrow, though it looks more like a purple, rather than the light pink that we’ve seen from other mobile devices. However, if that doesn’t suit your fancy, you can opt for the Lumia 822 in red, just as long as you don’t mind using Windows Phone 8.

Other than that, the two handsets haven’t changed. The pink DROID RAZR M runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and sports a 4.3-inch (960×540) Super AMOLED display. There’s also a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and an 8MP rear-facing camera. The price remains the same as well: $99.99 after signing a new two-year contract, while the Lumia 822 will cost $49.99.

In related Verizon news, the Samsung ATIV Odyssey will be available online, as well as in stores starting tomorrow. It will cost $49.99 after signing a two-year contract and sending in a $50 mail-in rebate. The ATIV Odyssey is Samsung’s newest budget device, sporting a 4-inch display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and a 5MP camera.

Larry Page talks Google’s fragile influence on Motorola

This past year Google decidedly purchased Motorola not only for their extensive patent portfolio, but their track record in the mobile industry – and this week Google’s CEO Larry Page has given more insight as to what hardware will be influenced due to this next-generation team-up. In an interview with Wired, Page made it clear that even though Google’s plan for Motorola continues to be “running it independently”, the company’s new head Dennis Woodside (placed there by Google) wants to be “disruptive” in its hardware designs. While the conversation began on Google’s purchase of Motorola for its patents, Page immediately turned it over to how they’ll be seeing the company take on a leading role in the near future.

IMG6708-M-580x386

Speaking specifically on how phones will be changing in the next five to 10 year as far as how fragile devices are, Page reveals the continuation of the RAZR theme at Motorola. The most recent set of phones to come from Motorola has been hardcore, so to speak, and essentially every bit of hardware that’s been released from the company (Wired suggests and Page confirms) was “previously in the pipeline” before Google came around. Soon, though, soon there will be some changes:

“As we said when we acquired Motorola, we’re running it independently, and Dennis Woodside is in charge. But that’s very much what we want to do with Motorola and what Dennis wants to do. There’s a lot of room for innovation in hardware. The phones we use now have glass that everyone worries will break if they drop the device. Five or 10 years from now, that will be different. There’s going to be a lot of change.” – Larry Page

As you’ll remember from a few months ago when the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD and DROID RAZR M were revealed in New York City, Google’s influence was spoken about by Dennis Woodside (pictured above) as a bit of a two-tiered system. On one hand Google has already taken control of Motorola by placing one of their own Googlers in as the head of the company. On the other hand, they maintain that Motorola will be run as a separate company.

speakingmoto

That’s not to say that Google wont be asking Motorola to create machines that epitomize the way Google mobile OS machines should look and feel. Android will be around for a very, very long time regardless of what happens to Motorola, but if Google pushes them in the direction Page speaks of above, their hardware will be around for a very, very long time as well.

Motorola DROID RAZR M HD leaked with details

A few details have been leaked by an anonymous tipster as to what the next-generation DROID RAZR M will be, building on the greatness of the already fabulous palm-sized beast. We had our first look at the original DROID RAZR M earlier this year in NYC, the reveal event also playing host to one of the first public showings of a newly minted Google-owned Motorola, complete with Google-minded software choices for Android – like on-screen buttons, for example. Here we’re seeing the logical next step for the DROID RAZR M with an “HD” name addition, but the specifications we’re seeing aren’t quite as solid as we’d hope – not logically, that is.

When you deal with leaks, tips, and rumors such as these, you’ve got to use logic above all else. We’ve got a bunch of text from a tipster that PhoneArena seems to trust well enough, but given the notion that this device would nearly out-do the now-hero-status-holding DROID RAZR HD, we’ve got to question its authenticity. The original DROID RAZR M is known for its lovely tiny 4.3-inch display, while the current DROID RAZR HD (and RAZR MAXX HD, for that matter) has a 4.7-inch display. The tip we’re seeing today cuts the gap between the two with a 4.5-inch display for a new M HD.

droid_razr_hd_backsnice-580x263

This machine has been tipped to work with Android 4.1, size up at 5.15 x 2.52 x 0.035 inches, and weigh in at 5.22 oz. The display is said to be a 4.5-inch 720 x 1280 pixel resolution TFT LCD, that being 326 PPI (highly impressive). This smartphone is being tipped here as coming with a massive 3300 mAh battery and will work with the same processor the original M had (and has) with the MSM8960, that being the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus dual-core 1.5GHz SoC.

Inside you’ve got 1GB of RAM (Dual-channel, 500 MHz) / DDR2 / 8192 MB ROM and built-in storage at 16GB. You’ll be able to add a microSD or microSDHC card for memory expansion up to 32GB with this device’s microSD card slot, and the machine will of course be working with Verizon’s brand of 4G LTE data. This machine will likely be appearing at CES 2013 if it does indeed show its face in the real world at all – stick with us in the [CES 2013 tag portal] until then – not too much longer now!

Motorola DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD Jelly Bean update rolling out now

Keeping up with their promise from Friday, Motorola and Verizon have begun rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Over-the-air update notifications are slowly hitting users’ devices, and new RAZR owners will finally be able to experience Project Butter, Google Now, and ISIS enhancements.

While Verizon simply said that update would hit sometime this week, we’re glad it’s happening first thing rather than later in the week on a Thursday or Friday. Either way, Verizon is pushing out the update “in phases,” so be patient if you haven’t yet seen the update hit your notification tray — it will come!

The Jelly Bean update comes with Google Now, which offers a Siri-like voice search experience that we really like, as well as Project Butter, which adds a layer of virtual butter to the user interface to make it snappier and smoother to navigate, as well as make it quicker to open up apps and switch between them effortlessly.

The DROID RAZR HD comes with a 4.7-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and runs on a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz with 1GB of RAM. While the 2530mAh battery may be plenty for most users, Motorola launched the RAZR MAXX HD, which is practically identical to the RAZR HD, except for the larger 3300mAh battery for those who really want to last all day long.

Motorola DROID RAZR HD, MAXX HD to get Jelly Bean next week

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about a Jelly Bean update for the DROID RAZR HD series, but Verizon has announced today that Motorola‘s newest RAZR devices will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean starting next week. The rollout will happen in phases, so if you don’t see your update the same time as someone else, be patient.

The Jelly Bean update is coming to Motorola’s DROID RAZR HD and the DROID RAZR MAXX HD. Verizon promised that the update would come to the new handsets back in September when they were originally announced, so it’s nice to see that they’re keeping up on their promises. On top of what users will get with Android 4.1, Verizon says that the update will also offer improved voice and data connectivity, better native calendar settings, and updated versions of all of Verizon’s preloaded apps.

The new DROID RAZR M received the update a couple weeks ago already. That device has a 4.3-inch qHD display with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 1GB of RAM. The DROID RAZR HD has a little more oomph to it, thanks to a larger 4.7-inch screen with a 1280×720 resolution. It also has the 1.5GHz S4 chip with 1GB of RAM, and the RAZR MAXX HD comes with a larger 3300mAh battery for those who yearn for better battery life.

Owners of the RAZR HD and MAXX HD should get a notification on their devices when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed. Those who are lucky enough may even see the update as soon as Monday, but don’t be surprised if you don’t end up with it until later in the week.

DROID RAZR M grabs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

True to their word, Motorola has indeed updated the DROID RAZR M for Verizon Wireless to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean here in November of 2012. This update represents a large stride for Verizon as well as Motorola and also brings on another reason why them being acquired by Google was a great, great thing for all parties involved. This update takes the place of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and makes Google Now, Voice Search, and an updated camera interface a reality for the most awesome little HD display-toting device Motorola has ever produced.

This machine now works with Voice Search as was available before, but Google’s enhancements in the software build make it better than ever with voice recognition that’s not to be beat. With Google Now you’ll have your own ever-updating list of cards that show you information on your favorite sports teams, let you know how long it will take you to get home from work, and inform you about the restaurants near you that have the best food available. Google Now also connects directly to the voice recognition-powered Google Search you’ve always wanted.

NOTE: This update is “rolling out” right now, this meaning you’ll have your update soon if not immediately, and Over The Air, too!

Motorola is doubling down on how clear they want to be with customers here in the modern mobile age, letting users know that they’ve got a new system that they’ll be working with from this point forward to make sure you’ve always got an up-to-date device. The VP of Software Product Management from Motorola Punit Soni has let the world know that they’ve got three objectives for the future:

1. Provide a full upgrade schedule for current of Motorola devices

2. Launch Test Drive, a new program that will allow consumers to take our major software upgrades for a test run and provide valuable feedback before we launch the upgrade publicly. The program will start with Android 4.2.

3. As part of the Motorola Trade Up Program, offer a $100 rebate to those who won’t be receiving an upgrade on their old Motorola device.

Have a peek at the Motorola Trade Up Program from back when it was announced, too. Motorola appears to have turned a corner with Google, making an Android universe that’s both fair and friendly. Take a peek at our full Motorola DROID RAZR M review for more information on this little fireball.

Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD review

Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD review

When Motorola resurrected the RAZR brand last year we didn’t realize that we were looking at the new face of the company. At the time, Google had yet to officially take over the handset manufacturer, it had a deep stable of less-than-impressive devices and, while it was a moderate success, the Droid RAZR didn’t exactly turn the market on its head. Still, in retrospect, it only makes sense that the RAZR would once again become the standard bearer for Moto. Even if we weren’t blown away by last year’s model, it was a big step in the right direction for the company, a device that featured a great mix of premium styling and performance. The new RAZR HD and MAXX HD take that basic formula and attempt to address our concerns about the display and battery life, the latter of which was already handled in dramatic fashion by the RAZR MAXX. So, how do the latest caps-happy, vowel-averse handsets from Motorola stack up against last year’s incarnations and the current crop of competitors? Keep on reading after the break to find out.
