BFI to launch streaming movie service on October 9th, focus on free content

The British Film Institute promised that it would put 10,000 movies online as part of the Film Forever initiative, and it’s now making good on its word — if slowly. The Institute will launch the first phase of its BFI Player streaming service on October 9th with a library of more than 1,000 videos, including movies, behind-the-scenes clips and archival footage. About 60 percent of the content will be free, with the rest available as pay-per-view. As for those remaining 9,000 videos? The BFI expects those to appear in the months ahead, and it’s launching BFI Player’s second phase in early 2014.

The Honest Truth About The Matrix

It’s been 14 years since The Matrix came out in theaters and became one of our favorite sci-fi movies ever. It’s been 10 years since The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions straggled onto screens and changed the way we thought about one of our favorite sci-fi movies ever. Honest Trailers smacks down the series and sums up the trilogy perfectly: it’s the most original sci-fi franchise since Star Wars that ultimately went all Jar Jar Binks on itself… kind of like Star Wars.

A Real Astronaut Uncovers the Gaping Plot Hole in Gravity

Gravity looks pretty damn terrifying. Most philosophers would tell us that for a film to really be chilling to the bone, it must call to mind a real-life existential fear that’s buried within our souls. So Gravity is tugging at some deeply held fears we’ve got, then, right? Well, according to real astronaut Michael Massimino, the movie is a bunch of bull.

$35,000 Prima Cinema Player brings movies home as soon as they hit theaters (eyes-on)

Prima Cinema

Ready to escape the usual crowd at the movie theater and host your own premieres at home? Prima Cinema has an answer, with the minor requirement of $35,000 (and a few other details) to get your home theater ready for first-run movies. Just as we’d heard when it first popped up a couple of years ago, that large setup fee buys the Cinema Player, a rack-mountable box loaded with a 2TB hard drive and enough DRM to keep the studios happy, plus a wired fingerprint reader used to ensure the owner’s identity. Movies download automatically to its hard drive in the background so they’re already there when the owner chooses to unlock them for viewing. That privilege costs $500 ($600 for 3D), good for one showing within 24 hours. Check after the break for more of our impressions after a quick preview at Prima’s CEDIA 2013 booth, then prep your black card for the pricey purchase.
