Sure it’s launched plenty of successful music apps, but to us, Smule will always be the company that gave us iPhone-based AutoTune in the form of I Am T-Pain (which we managed to try out on half of They Might Be Giants). Obviously, the Bay Area developer is looking to be a lot more. In fact, it’s opening itself up to the web in the form of a social network that’ll let visitors peruse its one billion or so user-generated songs. You can create playlists of Smule-created music and find folks to collaborate with for cloud-based jam sessions. The network opens today through Smule’s site. The alternate reality of Youtube — where locally unknown but internet famous entertainers with millions of subscribers grab a spot next to widely recognizable mainstream artists — meets the real world November 3rd with the first ever YouTube Music Awards. Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Arcade Fire are some of the names you’ll recognize from TV and radio that will be there, along with YouTube channel favorites like CDZA and Lindsey Stirling. Spike Jonze is penciled in to serve as creative director and actor Jason Schwartzman will host, while VICE and Sunset Entertainment drop in as executive producers. Since YouTube is where many people go to check out music and find the newest artists (MTV is for scripted shows and reality TV of… varying quality), that it would launch its own live event seems almost inevitable.

The show itself comes to you from NYC, but musical collaborations will be beamed in from locales around the globe including Seoul (so, that means Psy is going to show up), Moscow, London and Rio. Nominations for the awards open October 17th, and the site is calling on viewers to judge contributions from the past year to determine who will be the winner.

Rdio’s been busy making deals, tweaking its player and adding functionality over the past few months, and now it’s learning you what to listen to. The music streaming service is starting to drop hints about albums, stations and playlists — making recommendations based on users’ listening habits and who they’ve been following. These Echo Nest-powered suggestions are rolling out to browsers now, and the company’s blog says iOS and Android will see the functionality soon. Now, if you start getting all kinds of admonishments for The Baha Men, you only have yourself to blame.
