Spotify gets its own Twitter #Music app

Spotify gets its own Twitter #Music app

Twitter #Music launched with Spotify streaming as a core feature. It’s only fair that Spotify #Music get an app of its own, then, and one has just launched today. The new client very closely mimics its web counterpart, letting members find and play trending music on Twitter from big-name artists, fast-rising newcomers and everyone in given genres. As you’d imagine, the difference rests in how you play music — it’s much faster to start a track or add it to a playlist, and you don’t need to be a Spotify Premium subscriber to tune in. If you’re interested in learning what the world is listening to, you’ll find the free #Music app at the source link.

Audio pioneer Ray Dolby passes away

Audio pioneer Ray Dolby passes away

We’ve sad news to report today in the world of audio: Ray Dolby has passed on. His death comes relatively soon after losing both Dr. Fritz Sennheiser and Dr. Amar Bose, and as with those two gentlemen, Dolby’s legacy will continue to impact viewers and listeners around the globe for many years to come. Dolby founded Dolby Laboratories in 1965, seeking to provide a place for like-minded engineers to “push the limits of sight and sound,” as is stated on the outfit’s homepage.

He is perhaps best known for the Dolby noise-reduction system, and in more modern times, for his company’s iconic stamp on just about every major motion picture and piece of AV equipment known to man. Dolby’s surround sound magic continues to lead the industry, with Dolby 3D and Dolby Atmos as its latest contributions. Ray Dolby was 80 years old, and is survived by his wife Dagmar as well as sons Tom and David. A tribute video compiled by Dolby Labs can be found after the break.

Native Instruments intros second-gen Traktor Kontrol S2 and S4 DJ systems with iOS support (video)

Native Instruments launches redesigned Traktor Kontrol S2 and S4 DJ systems with iOS integration

Many modern DJs prefer to mix with an iPad instead of a laptop, and Native Instruments has just updated its Traktor Kontrol S4 and S2 decks (shown both above and below the break) to accommodate those tastes. The new controllers now work directly with Traktor DJ, giving iOS-based artists hardware controls for everything they see onscreen. There are updates to the controls themselves, of course. The two systems now have backlit RGB buttons, higher-precision jogwheels and sturdier designs; there’s also a shortcut to Flux Mode, which helps DJs tweak cue points and loops in mid-set. The revised version of the two-channel S2 is available for $499, while the four-channel S4 sells for $799.
