Watching This Video Will Make You Happy with 1990 Nostalgia

When you look back in time, it’s easy to forget what exactly happened when. Things sort of just blend together. Luckily we have YouTube videos to do our remembering for us now. Remember Videos just created a video about 1990 that shows off all that happened in pop culture back then, think Windows 3.0 Back to the Future 3, Total Recall, Robocop 2, some incredibly dated video games and more.

Spotify for Android update brings playback control to notifications menu, improved radio chops

A simple swipe down to reveal your notifications menu is now all you’ll need to futz with in order to skip around that Spotify playlist on Android. Thanks to an update, the Google-flavored version of the app now allows playback maneuvering from that screen in addition to a pair of bug fixes and improved radio performance. There’s also a fabled feature that allows for navigating the kit using telepathy to boot (completely true, ’cause it’s totally in the change log). If your device hasn’t already pinged you to do so, you can beam the update from the source link that follows.

This Tiny Wooden Speaker Turns Your Glasses Into Equalizers

Chances are you’ve used an equalizer before, and chances are there was a lot of blindly turning dials and hoping something good happened. The Timbre Speaker embraces exactly that kind of blind experimentation by using nothing but two glasses for its sound control.

Rdio version 2.21 for iOS gets song stations, autoplay

DNP Rdio version 221 for iOS gets song stations, autoplay

Rdio, the streaming service that hates the letter a, has updated its iOS app to help users find new, yet similar, music. Song Stations will generate playlists from a single artist, which folds in related music as it goes. The feature will let you preview the next four tracks in the list, giving you the power to skip as many time as you like — just in case you find yourself trapped in a singer’s middle-period creative slump. Rdio has also added autoplay to the app, so when your current playlist has ended, it’ll find something similar to ensure you’re never plunged into an awkward silence.

Public Enemy backs BitTorrent, releases new single in a Bundle, announces remix contest for fans

Public Enemy backs BitTorrent, releases new single in a Bundle, announces remix contest for fans

BitTorrent announced its new file format, the Bundle, just over a month ago, giving artists new tools to control content distributed P2P. Now, Public Enemy is one of the first to take advantage of those features by releasing its latest single as a Bundle and announcing a BitTorrent-based remix contest. Downloading the torrent gets you a copy of “Get Up Stand Up,” and giving Chuck D and his mates your email address unlocks the Bundle — thereby netting you the song’s music video, outtakes and 37 remix-able multitracks. That last bit is key, as Public Enemy’s encouraging folks to submit remixes of the song to the group using BitTorrent SoShare. From those submissions, Public Enemy will pick the best remix, officially release it, and give the winner recording gear and a smattering of Public Enemy swag. Sound good? You bring the DJ skills, and we’ve got you covered with the source tracks and more info below.

Show of Hands: Did You Buy, Stream, or Pirate Yeezus?

Today was the official release date for Kanye West’s latest album Yeezus, but in spite of the great lengths the Louis Vuitton Don went to keep it out of the wrong hands, it leaked on Friday. So did you download it right away or wait to obtain it by the legal means? (Yeezy haters to the left for this question).

Shazam for iOS updated with Pulse discovery feature, redesigned tab bar on iPhone

Shazam for iOS updated with Pulse discovery feature, redesigned tab bar on iPhone

It’s been a mere few weeks since Shazam introduced those new location-based and tagging features for the tablet version of its iOS app, but the music-driven service isn’t stopping there. Reaching version 6.1 on Apple’s platform, today Shazam’s universal application is bringing a few more tidbits to both the iPhone and iPad. Handset users, for one, will notice speedier load times within the app and a rather fresh look that focuses on displaying more info on the tab bar — such as friend tags and chart updates. On the bigger screen, Shazam says it’s improved things by allowing users to more easily delete tags from Favorites and by adding under-the-hood tweaks which should make for a smoother experience while browsing the Friends feed.

The bigger news, perhaps, is Shazam Pulse, a music discovery tool that’s making its way to the iOS app, one which allows folks to quickly see and sample the music currently being tagged by people. It’s worth noting that all these new features are available for Shazam and Shazam Encore, so fret not if you have one or the other.
