Wearable technology seems to be what’s trending these days, and we can expect many such devices to be announced or rumored about this year. That being said, Huawei is said to unveil their own smartwatch at MWC 2014, and now thanks to a recent photo posted by a Huawei official on their Weibo account, we might have our first glimpse at said device. Accompanying the post is a description which reads, “My new toy, do you like this color?” As you can see in the image above, Huawei has decided to go with a more outlandish design for its smartwatch, versus the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Pebble smartwatch, both of which feature slightly more “serious” designs.
In fact based on what we can see, it would seem that Huawei would be trying to appeal to a more fashion-conscious type of customer thanks to its funky and somewhat sporty look, not to mention the baby blue wristband does help the device stand out from the crowd. This is not to say that the design is ugly, it’s just a bit too out there and might not appeal to the more hardcore techie who might prefer something a little more somber, or to the tech-savvy business user who would prefer something less playful. Come MWC 2014, chances of Nokia unveiling an Android smartphone is pretty high, at least that’s the feeling we’re getting thanks to the barrage of rumors, leaked photos, and a recent webcast invite which seems to suggest that the Nokia Normandy/Nokia X is indeed real and something we can look forward to. Well now thanks to Chinese website, Coolxap, they have managed to get their hands on a handful of photos which are allegedly that of the Nokia Normandy. These photos, unlike previous press renderings, show a more “real life” version of the phone along with what appears to be a forked version of Android running in the background.
The rumors are claiming that Nokia will be using a forked version of Android for the handset, similar to what Amazon did with the Kindle series of Android tablets. This means that Nokia’s take on Android will be vastly different to what we’ve become accustomed to in the past, and in a way based on what we can see, is reminiscent of the tile layout used by the Windows Phone platform. Apart from that, the handset itself is pretty nondescript and there’s really nothing to shout about in terms of its design. So far according to the rumors, it has been suggested that the Nokia Normandy/Nokia X will pack a 4-inch 800×480 display, a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor with 512MB of RAM, a 5MP camera, and possibly a 1,500mAh battery. Acer Liquid E3 & Z4 Announced

When it comes to smartphones, Acer is definitely not a name that comes to mind. After all the Taiwanese company hasn’t really made that big of a dent in the smartphone market and are probably better known for their computers. That hasn’t stopped the company from trying and for MWC 2014, it looks like Acer has announced the Liquid E3 and the Liquid Z4, both of which appear to sport some pretty low-mid ranged specs, which also means that both handsets will be easy on your pockets. It wasn’t too long after Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 5s and the fact that the phone came packing Apple’s A7 SoC, a 64-bit chipset, that word had it that Samsung would be prepping a 64-bit Exynos chipset of their own as well. Supposedly the chipset would be making its way into the Samsung Galaxy S5 but whether or not that will be happening remains to be seen. However what we do know is that Samsung has an Exynos-related announcement that they will be making at MWC 2014, thanks to a recent tweet by Samsung’s Exynos Twitter account in which the tweet reads, “Continuing our market-leading innovation and leadership, we bring you our latest innovations. Please stay tuned.”
The tweet was accompanied by the image above, which as you can see says, “Exynos Infinity”. We’re not sure if the Exynos Infinity is Samsung’s latest Exynos chipset or if Samsung was merely using the phrase as a tagline, but either way we’re definitely excited to see what Samsung might have in store for us. Could it be that Samsung will be unveiling a 64-bit chipset of their own? And more importantly, will this chipset be responsible for powering Samsung’s latest series of handsets? It has been a while since BlackBerry launched any new devices, the last smartphone to come out of Waterloo was the Z30, which was basically an enlarged version of the Z10. The company’s hardware division hasn’t been able to produce a hit for quite some time now, but with the new leadership taking charge a few months back, there are once again signs of a possible comeback. BlackBerry has reiterated its commitment to devices multiple times, and its expected to launch at least two high end devices in 2014. Photos of an alleged BlackBerry 10 prototype with a full QWERTY keyboard have leaked, presumably hinting at what’s to come from the ailing Canadian manufacturer.

PayPal is one of the leaders in the mobile payments space, so it won’t surprise anyone if it teams up with one of the largest mobile vendors in the world. Recently it was rumored that Apple is working on a payments solution of its own, that it was said that PayPal wants in on that service, even if its just allowed to handle the backend. While that partnership is yet to materialize, its possible that at the Samsung MWC 2014 event, a partnership between PayPal and the Korean juggernaut may be announced.

It was back in September last year when Samsung launched its first smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear. Since then there have been many reports of dismal sales, which have apparently forced the company’s hand to launch a successor after just six months. Previously it was rumored that a new Galaxy Gear will be launched alongside Galaxy S5 at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona later this week. However, sources familiar with the company’s plans tell The Verge that its likely Samsung will unveil multiple models of its smartwatch at the industry’s biggest event.

Though those days are long gone when customers didn’t exactly have the option to purchase a device that could withstand the elements. Samsung already offers a similar version of the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S4 Active. Rumor has it though that the Galaxy S5 itself will be water and dust proof, essentially eliminating the need for another such variant altogether.
