ZTE Geek Running On Tizen Rumored To Be Shown Off At MWC 2014

ZTE Geek Running On Tizen Rumored To Be Shown Off At MWC 2014Back in 2013, ZTE officially unveiled the ZTE Geek Android smartphone. Unlike most Android smartphones, the ZTE Geek would not be powered by a processor based on the ARM architecture, but would be powered by an Intel processor instead. Well it looks like ZTE could be looking to give the Geek a revival this year at MWC because according to a report published in Greece, ZTE is set to unveil a new ZTE Geek, but instead of running on Android, the new Geek will be powered by the Tizen platform instead. Expected to debut at MWC 2014 this year, the handset is said to be shown off at the Tizen Association booth where there will reportedly be an app challenge taking place, presumably to lure developers to create apps for the Tizen platform.

For those unfamiliar, Tizen is a smartphone platform that was developed in part by Samsung. The platform is said to be an alternative to iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone. In fact, Samsung who has depended greatly on Android is said to be developing a Tizen handset of their own, although the handset has yet to be officially announced. While we can’t speak for the quality of Tizen and its performance, the fact that Android and iOS are so incredibly established and with a wealth of apps that their disposal, budding platforms will most likely discover it’s an uphill battle if they hope to displace the leaders of the smartphone market.

The Mobile World Congress 2014 takes place next month in Barcelona. This event is attended by major players in the phone industry, not to mention the fact that there’s coverage from global media. Its certainly a big deal, and we often see new devices being announced at MWC. The event isn’t all about devices, there are meetings and discussions as well as keynote speeches from some of the top people in the industry. This year’s opening keynote isn’t going to be delivered by a CEO of a major phone manufacturer, its going to be delivered by the co-founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg’s keynote speech will open Mobile World Congress 2014 on February 24th, it will be streamed online so you really don’t have to go all the way to Barcelona just to hear him speak. Joining him onstage is renowned journalist David Kirkpatrick. They will discuss “extending the benefits of ubiquitous internet access to the unconnected world.” Zuckerberg isn’t the only high-profile personality making a keynote speech, other speakers include IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum and more. We will be on the ground in Barcelona to bring you the latest updates from MWC 2014. Sony “Sirius” Could Be Launched As The Xperia Z2

Sony Sirius Could Be Launched As The Xperia Z2Earlier at CES 2014, we saw a couple of new Sony handsets like the Xperia Z1s and the Xperia Z1 Compact, and while both phones were pretty interesting in their own way, neither were the company’s flagship device of 2014. Nope, that honor would be going to a certain rumored Sony “Sirius” handset which is rumored to make its debut at MWC 2014 instead, an event dedicated to mobile devices. Now according to the rumors, word has it that Sony could be launching the device as the Xperia Z2 which we guess would make sense given that the Xperia Z1 moniker has been taken, and the Z2 would signify that it is an upgrade over its predecessor.

While Sony has yet to officially confirm any of this, word on the street has it that the Sony Xperia Z2 could pack some pretty impressive hardware. This includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor which is pretty standard these days in high-end smartphones, a 5.2” 2,560×1,440 QHD display which would allow it to compete with the likes of Samsung’s rumored 2K display as well for the Galaxy S5, 3GB of RAM, a whopping 20.7MP camera, and a sizeable 3,700mAh battery which would trump the Galaxy S5’s rumored 2,900mAh battery. It is also expected to feature the same water and dust protection that the original Xperia Z had. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully Sony will have more information to share at MWC 2014, if not before.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Scanner Rumors Making Rounds Once Again

Samsung Galaxy S5 Fingerprint Scanner Rumors Making Rounds Once Again

Fingerprint scanners aren’t new, they have been around for a long time and have previously even tried their luck entering the mainstream market through smartphones. The trend was resurrected last year and suddenly it was all the rage. Apple’s much rumored iPhone 5s did indeed come with a fingerprint scanner, and Samsung was expected to follow up with the Galaxy Note 3, which it didn’t do. The HTC One Max did come with a fingerprint scanner, joining the very short list of high-end devices released in 2013 that are capable of scanning fingerprints. Now rumors have flared once again that Samsung is going to put said scanner in its upcoming high-end devices, one of which is the Galaxy S5.

Now there has been a lot of talk about the Galaxy S5 release. It has been rumored that Samsung wants to release it ahead of schedule due to disappointing Galaxy S4 sales. The company hasn’t confirmed anything as yet, so such rumors must definitely be taken with a grain of salt. This particular rumor comes from Digitimes, which also claims that even LG’s 2014 flagships are going to come with fingerprint scanners provided by a couple of companies called Validity and FingerPrint Cards. As per recent rumors, the Galaxy S5 is expected to be released at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month, so we’ll know for sure then.

New Sony Tablet Expected To Be Unveiled At MWC 2014

New Sony Tablet Expected To Be Unveiled At MWC 2014

It has been a while since Sony launched a new tablet. The Xperia Tablet Z was launched almost a year back, so the time is ripe for a new tablet from Sony. Recently the rumor mill has been abuzz with chatter about upcoming Sony products, which includes a flagship smartphone reportedly codenamed Sirius. There’s chatter about a new tablet as well, which has now been backed up by @evleaks, known for his fairly strong track record when it comes to these things. The new tablet, codenamed “Castor,” is pegged for an official announcement at the Mobile World Congress 2014 which takes place in Barcelona next month.

Not much information is available about the tablet at this point in time, nothing is known about its design and hardware. According to @evleaks though, the tablet is going to tout a Qualcomm MSM8974AB processor, which is just a pumped up variant of the quadcore Snapdragon 800 with higher clocked GPU and CPU. Moreover, it is also said that this tablet will be available 4G and Wi-Fi only variants. While it hasn’t been mentioned if this tablet runs on Android, its highly likely that it will, Sony isn’t expected to release a Windows powered tablet anytime soon. Presumably it will come with Android 4.4 KitKat pre-installed. MWC is a little over a month off, so we’ll have to wait until then to be absolutely sure.
