There are plenty of Internet controlled thermostats on the market today, including the Nest thermostat. The idea behind these gadgets is to allow users to control the climate system in their home using a smartphone from anywhere they can get online. UK utilities provider British Gas has unveiled its own remote control thermostat system called […]
Nest has announced a new developer program for its Learning Thermostat, a nifty device that has receive quite a bit of attention in recent times. Under the program, developers will be able to participate in creating a widespread “connected experience for the home,” something that the maker is detailing now but will officially start early […]
Despite its internet connection, Nest’s Learning Thermostat has been a closed device so far — you’ve had to rely on Nest for new features and software. The company is opening up its platform with the announcement of a developer program. Programmers will soon get to build web apps that link the thermostat to other devices and services, such as home automation equipment. Nest won’t start the program until early 2014, but it’s already partnering with Control4; eventually, all of Control4’s apps and remotes will commandeer Nest hardware. If you’re interested in growing the ecosystem, you’ll find more details at the source link.

A couple of years ago, the new Nest Learning Thermostat was announced to the whole world, bringing the definition of “smart” over to the world of thermostats. Well, Nest as a company has decided not to just sit back and fold their hands while watching the world go by, but rather, they have worked to deliver a new smoke detector that they claim will eventually be the “smartest” model of its kind in the world when it arrives. According to former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin, this new smoke detector will be given the name “Protect”, and it will sport some rather nifty features such as motion sensors so that you are able to use a gesture like a wave to turn off an alarm, in addition to a carbon monoxide detector.
All right, so a smoke detector is far from being the sexiest device at home or at the office, but then again from the financial point of view, it makes plenty of sense since smoke detectors are required by law in all 50 states. Hence, if one is able to come up with a compelling case for a great smoke detector that does not break the bank, so much the better. No idea as to when the Protect smoke detector will go on sale though.

You guys might recall that back in 2011, former Apple executive, Tony Fadell, launched a thermostat called the Nest Learning Thermostat. The device, for those unfamiliar, is to help regulate the temperature in your homes but does it in a smart way and will learn your needs, while at the same time optimize itself to consume less energy in the long run. The device has since seen a release of a second-generation but now word on the street has it that the company is looking to release a smoke detector that is expected to work alongside the Learning Thermostat.
It is unclear as to the full specifications of the smoke detector, but given the Learning Thermostat’s features, the smoke detector product is expected to be heavily laden with sensors as well, apart from the default and obvious smoke sensor, of course. Some features could include subscription monitoring services along with motion sensors. It has also been rumored that the device could be announced later this year as well, so we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for it, but what do you guys think? What sort of high-tech features could a smoke detector bring to the table?

Now that Nest has rolled out its second-gen smart thermostat, it looks like it’s gearing up to reveal its next project: an intelligent smoke detector dubbed Protect. Jessica Lessin, formerly of the Wall Street Journal, first broke word of the device and now AllThingsD is chiming in to confirm its existence. Specifics are slim, but it’s said Protect will connect to the outfit’s existing A/C hardware (presumably over Bluetooth), lending it long battery life since it won’t need a WiFi chip. Lessin notes that a subscription-based monitoring service and the ability to sense carbon monoxide have been considered, but ATD‘s sources say the contraption won’t be tied to a monthly fee. An official unveiling is expected to occur soon, and retail availability could come by year’s end. Now that intelligent smoke detectors appear poised to head into homes soon, we can only hope they’re as charming as Gilbert Gottfried.

Some three years ago, Nest changed the way we think about thermostats
A lot of us don’t have much in the way of home automation, but we’d venture to guess that most of us would absolutely love having a smarter residence. Amazon knows this, and it wants to celebrate its Home Automation store by hooking you up with a Nest thermostat. The smart thermostat — which learns your preferred temperatures, turns itself down when you’re not at home and can be controlled via WiFi — is valued at $250 and is just one of a plethora of products that Amazon is featuring to help you control your house easier, near or far. We’ve got three to hand out to lucky readers, so take a chance by entering in the Rafflecopter widget below!

Nest may be better known as a company that offers the Learning Thermostat, a device that is touted as being a next-generation thermostat. This means easy installation, the ability to adjust the temperature based on your habits, the ability to control the thermostat from outside of the home and more. What some may not realize […]
A revelation of sorts has appeared today courtesy of the CEO of Nest – former employee of Apple – in discussions about an Apple-made headset similar to what we’re seeing now most famously in Google Glass. This week the folks at Co.Design have collected a set of quotes from former Apple employees and designers showing […]
