Netflix balances traffic across multiple Amazon cloud regions to prevent outages

Netflix has had problems with outages in the past that left users unable to watch content on its streaming service. In the past, Netflix only used a single Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud region and a failure in that region left users unable to connect. The last major outage happened on Christmas Eve of last […]

Forget The Timer, Use Netflix to Judge When Your Turkey's Done

Figuring out how long to leave your Thanksgiving turkey in the oven feels like a stress nightmare from high school algebra. Converting pounds of turkey into minutes of cooking is way easier when you’ve got a tangible reference point. Say, two adorable holiday-themed kids movies.

Netflix to launch second season of Lilyhammer on December 13

Netflix has hit a home run with some of its original programming. One of the most popular original shows that Netflix offers is House of Cards. However, the first of the Netflix original shows was Lilyhammer. That show was announced in January of this year for the first time. Season one of Lilyhammer debuted in […]

Netflix saves The Killing one more time, six-episode final season will be a streaming exclusive

Netflix saves The Killing one more time, sixepisode final season will be a streaming exclusive

Netflix already pulled whodunnit The Killing from the scrap pile once, working out a deal with AMC to produce a third season for airing and subsequent streaming, and now it’s done it again. The Killing will see a fourth and final six-episode season (when is still up in the air), produced by Fox, which Netflix will stream exclusively in the areas where it provides service. This, along with continued hints of more Arrested Development in the works will probably get fans of other canceled/about-to-be canceled series excited, although we’ll have to wait and see how many refurb projects Netflix is ready to put next to its original content.

While all of the content on Netflix is provided equally, the look of its player can vary pretty substantially between devices, making it a pain to find things. Now, the company has unified its interface across the majority of its apps.

Netflix On TV Revamped

Netflix can be said to have been ingrained in the consciousness of many an American, especially when you take into consideration that Netflix as well as YouTube account for more than 60% of North American data, now how about that? Not only that, 4K video streaming tests with Netflix are already being held, with Ultra HD tipped to launch sometime next year. Having said and done all that, don’t you think that it is rather strange that the browsing experience happens to be fragmented between platforms? In fact, making the jump between the likes of the PS3, Xbox and Roku devices is not as smooth as expected, where each of them has their own interpretation on how Netflix looks like. Good to know that Netflix has paid attention to this detail, revealing a new and unified television experience.

Company director of innovation Chris Jaffe said, “About a year and half ago we took a step back to think about Netflix’s television experience across devices. What we saw was a mismatch in how Netflix worked relative to how regular TV works, where you just turn it on and things are happening. We also looked at the devices and realized that while we’ve got a great experience on the PS3 and some smart TVs, we’ve got an Xbox 360 experience that’s very different.”

Netflix has revealed a new overhauled interface design that is intended for those who watch the service on a television. Netflix Now Rolling out to All TiVo Boxes for Virgin Media Subscribers

Back in September, Virgin Media in the UK gave in and offered a limited number of its subscribers using TiVo set-top boxes access to Netflix. The Netflix application operated directly on the set-top box, meaning that users didn’t have to switch to a different device or change inputs to watch Netflix streaming content. Originally, Virgin Media tested Netflix with only 40,000 of its TiVo subscribers.

The company announced today that it is now rolling out access to the Netflix application to all of its TiVo set-top box subscribers. Access is rolling out over the next few days and it will coexist along with Virgin Media’s current range of on-demand content.

Virgin Media subscribers who have a TiVo set-top box and subscribe to Premier or VIP Collections tiers will be able to get a free six-month trial of Netflix if they don’t already have a Netflix account. I’m sure I’m not the only fan of Netflix glad to see at least one cable provider get rid of the fear that Netflix will hurt its profitability.

Hopefully, we’ll start to see more cable and satellite providers warm up to partnerships with the service in the near future.

Netflix now available on Virgin Media TiVo set-top boxes in the UK

Back in September, we heard the first rumblings that Virgin Media in the UK would be offering the ability to stream Netflix content to users of its TiVo set-top boxes. The move came as part of an effort by TiVo to help Netflix get on the set-top boxes around the world. TiVo boxes are currently […]
