Netflix’s push into original content has received its latest positive feedback from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, netting 14 nominations for the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Most of those went to standout series House of Cards, which was nominated for Most Outstanding Drama, with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright nominated for outstanding lead actor and actress awards. The fourth season of Arrested Development also received recognition with three nominations, while Hemlock Grove is on the list for two. Netflix will need to launch a few more hits if it wants to pass other players in the entertainment space (HBO’s Game of Thrones received 16 nominations by itself while the network totaled 108, for example), but with these first-ever nominations for streaming content, it’s off to a good start.

Did you know that Netflix is cropping the hell out of movies? I didn’t. But even if you had noticed, it’s unlikely you realize just how bad it gets. A semi-new Tumblr called What Netflix Does has pointed out the extent of the trimming. And it’s atrocious.
JVC launches flagship BlackSapphire XL 3D HDTV line with Netflix, Slingbox client
Posted in: Today's ChiliJVC’s been trying to get back into the HDTV game via its recent partnership with Vizio maker Amtran, and just took another big step by unveiling the flagship BlackSapphire SL series. The new models boast high-end touches like tiny bezels, ultra-thin profiles and an edge-lit LED “adaptive backlight.” You’ll also get built-in WiFi, SmartTV with apps like Netflix, Pandora and a Slingbox client, Xinema-Sound audio with simulated surround-sound, and passive 3D with four sets of included glasses. Interestingly, JVC decided to launch the series with rather small 42-inch and 47-inch models, though Amtran told CNET that larger sizes are also in the works. Also unusual in a flagship is three-digit pricing: $799 for the smaller SL42B-C and $899 for the SL47B-C. Considering the sticker shock we’ve had lately, however, we’re all for keeping things small in that regard. Both models will be up for grabs later this summer.

Netflix is in talks to bring Arrested Development back for a fifth season, it’s been confirmed, despite mixed reviews for season four when it debuted on the on-demand streaming provider back in May. “We are in conversations with [Netflix] to do another” Brian Grazer, CEO of production company Imagine Entertainment responsible for the show, told Bloomberg, describing Netflix as “interested in doing that.”
The return of Arrested Development was a high-profile event for Netflix, one of the company’s much-vaunted attempts to develop and fund its own content rather than just provide that of other studios. The show, along with the homegrown “Netflix Originals” Hemlock Grove, debuted on the service in Q2, with all episodes available at once rather than forcing people to wait for each season to roll out progressively.
However, reviews of Arrested Development season four proved mixed, with critics and fans vocal in their concern that the show had lost some of its previous sparkle. Netflix’s stock price took a tumble as high-profile reviewers slammed the series, criticizing the jokes as weak and the plotlines as flabby.
Netflix is yet to comment on the reported talks, but has given mixed messages on its intentions for Arrested Development in previous statements. Initially, the show’s return was billed as a one-season affair, but CEO Reed Hastings muddied that certainty in May when he commented that “if the talent were willing to do more and interested in that, I’m sure we would be willing.”
The company is yet to reveal exact viewing figures for Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove, though may detail how successful each show was when it announces its Q2 financial results on July 22. Hemlock Grove has already been renewed for a second season, along with House of Cards, Lilyhammer, and Orange is the New Black.
Part of Netflix’s strategy with its original content is to mine its viewer preferences data to identify potential hit shows yet to be created. Hemlock Grove, for instance, was commissioned after Netflix analysis indicated viewers were keen on supernatural-themed content and Eli Roth as a director.

Though some people weren’t as fanatical about Netflix’s Season 4 of Arrested Development, I loved it (especially once it got rolling). So I’m ecstatic that Netflix is currently in talks to do another season of Arrested Development. As awesome as a movie has sounded in the past, more episodic puzzles in the name of Arrested Development is always a good thing.
It would appear that the burgeoning comedy series New Girl will become Netflix next exclusive online series – and not just because Zooey Deschanel thinks it’s cute to watch television on a notebook. This deal appears to be kicking the show out from Hulu where it’s called home since birth – now you’ll be watching the full series on the big red network instead.
This is also only the latest in a line of exclusive deals that web-based video streaming companies have initiated. The show itself will still be shown on television, and indeed you will not be able to see episodes any earlier than you’d have been able on Hulu, but here you’ll get the whole mess of them at once if you wish.
This show has been on for several seasons and, for a while last season, had been rumored to be going the way of the dodo due to mixed reviews. Here it would seem that the cast and crew are ready to stick around for some time to come.
The addition of this show to Netflix exclusive series of shows is a bit more symbolic than it is game-changing. Netflix collection of home-made series grows at a rate roughly the same as they’ve added shows that appear on television before they hit the web, and with mid-tier additions like New Girl making their way to the network, it may only be a matter of time before they grab hold of more big-name beasts.
And keep shows alive, as well. How else would a show like Arrested Development been able to have a bonus season if not for the big N?
