Bloomberg Brings 24-Hour Live News To Apple TV; Crackle, KOR TV And Watch ABC Also Added

tech-apple-tv-vevo-app

Apple continues adding new channel partners to its Apple TV hardware, and now it’s rolling out four new ones today (via 9to5Mac), including Watch ABC for streaming local ABC affiliate content, Crackle for movies and TV, and KOR TV, a Korean language channel. There’s also Bloomberg, which is going to be streaming a live 24-hour news channel that provides content seven days a week.

This launch is just the most recent in what’s been an increasingly fast-paced rollout of new content partners on Apple’s set-top box, but it brings some interesting ingredients to the mix, including local broadcast TV streaming and a 24-hour news channel, which are key ingredients to what many users would consider basic TV service. Apple TV didn’t start off as a really viable cord-cutting alternative for people looking to ditch their cable subscriptions, but it’s been building up a piecemeal library of a la carte content that begins to become a truly worthy option.

It’s true that many of the services are still tied to cable service and TV packages, including the new Watch ABC channel and the HBO Go app that was launched previously, but it’s best to take all of these launches as baby steps in a larger plan that sees content unbundled from traditional sources. Apple’s Apple TV bet is a long play, and I think we’re only just starting to see the next curve around the bend on the long road to what will ultimately be a robust alternative to subscription-based bundled TV services.

Of course, that takes for granted these service providers can deliver content in a high-quality, reliable way. I’ve heard less than flattering things about the WSJ channel, which delivers live news content, but only during certain hours, unlike the Bloomberg effort. Still, the building blocks are falling into place, and Apple just needs to continue this rollout while avoiding a big blockade from legacy players along the way

Samsung and Philips raided in Europe anti-competition investigation

Samsung and Philips have confirmed that they are under investigation by the European Commission about potential anticompetitive behaviors, after EU inspectors raided a number of companies earlier this week. The EC did not name the targeted companies; however, both firms revealed to the BBC that they were co-operating with investigators around concerns that they have […]

NASA’s Hilarious Response to Mentos and Coke Rocket Proposal

NASA is always out to find new way to propel their rockets. One enterprising geek apparently took it upon himself to send NASA a proposal to power a rocket with a “shit load of Coke” and a bunch of Mentos. Clearly, the letter was meant as a joke, but NASA Associate Administrator Steven Malkovich took the time to respond.

Malkovich told the sender, one Mr. Jones, that it had no interest in his rocket proposal. NASA says there is no practical use for the tech, even if they used a “shit load” of Coke as Mr. Jones suggested. My favorite part of the NASA response is where they point out it takes years of training to become an astronaut.

Mr. Jones had apparently said that he wanted to be a “spaceman” and that it appeared to be so simple even a chimp could do it. You can click the image of the letter to get a better look at the text for yourself. I’m now crafting a much better plan to fuel rockets involving feeding astronauts a steady diet of Taco Bell Chilitos and a flatulence capturing apparatus.

Facebook to become more news-centric with an emphasis on smartphone users

In October, a Pew Research Center report was released showing that 30-percent of American adults on Facebook get at least part of their news through the social network. That number may grow in the coming months, with Facebook announcing today that it will be showing more news links, particularly for those who are accessing the […]

Guy Accidentally Throws Away Hard Drive with $7.5 Million in Bitcoins

Backing up your hard drive is always good advice and this story should drive the point home. Do not let this happen to you. British IT professional James Howells mined 7,500 Bitcoins back in 2009. Then he completely forgot about them.

Those Bitcoins are now worth about $7.5 million(USD). So anyway, he later threw away the hard drive where he had it all stored last summer. Ohhhh that sucks. Now they are sitting somewhere in a landfill the size of a soccer field. They are buried under about four feet of trash. There is no way he could ever hope to find the hard drive. Man, that must feel like crap.

However, Howell isn’t letting it get him down, saying that he could either laugh or cry about it. That said has created a new Bitcoin wallet asking for help if anyone feels sorry for him.

Boomf prints Instagram photos on marshmallows, merges the confectionery and digital

Sharing images has become an increasingly streamlined process over the years — pull out a smartphone, take a picture, upload it to Instagram or a similar service and perhaps tag friends you want to notice it. If you find that such a process has become dull, there’s now another option: confectionery printing onto cube-shaped marshmallows, […]

CyanogenMod Installer pulled from Play as Google complains

Popular Android tweak tool CyanogenMod Installer has been pulled from the Google Play store, after developers Cyanogen were warned by Google that if they didn’t yank it, the search giant would. Released earlier this month, the CyanogenMod Installer Application effectively opens up an Android device to easier installation of the CyanogenMod package itself; as we […]

Royal Air Force Fighter Found in Sahara Desert 70-Years After It Went Missing

The number of soldiers on both sides of WWII that were killed or went missing is just staggering. Now, the mystery surrounding one RAF pilot and what happened to him and his plane has been solved after 70 years. RAF flight Sergeant Dennis Copping climbed into his Kittyhawk P-40 aircraft in June 1942 to fly the plane to another airbase for repairs. He was never seen or heard from again.

The RAF long believed that Copping became disoriented during his flight and strayed off course. Recently an explorer working for an oil company came upon a very odd site in the Western Desert in Egypt. The explorer came upon a mostly intact and incredibly well preserved P-40 sitting on the ground in the desert.

The aircraft had some damage from the crash, for one the propeller was torn off and lying away from the aircraft. The plane also notably had what appeared to be bullet holes in the fuselage. It’s unclear if those bullet holes were the damage the pilot was taking the aircraft in to have repaired or if perhaps they are why the aircraft crashed in the desert. The aircraft was complete with its .50 cal machine guns and ammo and hasn’t been touched since the pilot left the aircraft sitting on the desert floor.

Indications are that the pilot survived the crash. The pilot’s parachute was found alongside the wreckage along with a makeshift shelter. However, the pilot’s remains are nowhere to be found. The theory is that the pilot tried to walk out of the desert and perished somewhere in the sands. The crash location is 200 miles from the nearest city.
