Red Nexus 5 arrives on Google Play at last

red-nexus-5I am quite sure that many of us have heard of the age old proverb, that “good things come to those who wait”. Those who happen to celebrate the Lunar New Year will know that red is an auspicious color, so you would see plenty of red clothes being worn, not to mention at some homes, red cloth that adorns the doorpost to usher in luck, prosperity and good fortune for the rest of the coming year. Having said that, I am quite sure that the red Nexus 5 that has finally arrived on Google Play has nothing to do with the Lunar New Year, but rather, the time is just ripe for it to happen. The first red Nexus 5 device is now available on Google Play, and another milestone is achieved – this is the first Google phone that will arrive in a trio of different colors – and they are, red, white and black.

First launched in October last year in a partnership between LG and Google, the Nexus 5 has picked up its fair share of praise and bouquets, coming across as a stylish, high-performance Google phone. The Nexus 5 was (and still is) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, where it is accompanied by a stunning 5-inch Full HD IPS display with Android 4.4, KitKat, the latest version of the Android OS, as the mobile operating system of choice..

Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, shared, “The Nexus line has always been about doing things differently and consumers who share this philosophy have been our most loyal fans. We’re carrying this thinking over to the red Nexus 5, which we think will catch the eye of consumers who want to make an even bolder statement.”

If you are interested in picking up the red Nexus 5 for yourself, you can do so on Google Play from this month in the U.S.,Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan and Korea, while wider availability will happen across Europe before February is over.

The Nexus 5 Now Comes In Red

nexus

In case you feel the white Nexus 5 is too ostentatious and the black Nexus 5 is to monotonous, the Nexus 5 now comes in red. Because red says you’re confident and are not afraid to show it.

Pricing is the same: $349 for the 16GB and $399 for the 32GB. It’s currently only available through the Google Play store, but a recent Sprint leak seems to indicate it will hit at least that carrier in the near future.

Personally, I’m holding out for the transparent version because it’s what’s inside that counts. Or some malarkey like that.

TC Droidcast Episode 20: Motorola Goes To Lenovo, Google Loves Nexus And Ouya V2

droidcast-banner-20

It’s a brave new dawn for the TechCrunch Droidcast as I take over hosting duties from Chris Velazco… who returns temporarily from the distant lands of Engadget to share his insights on Google’s sale of Motorola to Lenovo, the Nexus program at Google and what’s next for hardware there, and the new, slightly improved Ouya Android console.

Remember that you can now also catch Chris on the Engadget Mobile Podcast, if you miss him. Plus remember that even though Google has jettisoned its own pet mobile phone maker, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have hardware chops – the Nest team has just come on board, for instance, and isn’t likely to leave the roost anytime soon. As for the Ouya, if you’re looking to learn more about what’s new with the updated hardware, you’ll find the (short) list here.

We invite you to enjoy weekly Android podcasts every Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern and 1:00 p.m. Pacific (new time!), in addition to our weekly Gadgets podcast at 3 p.m. Eastern and noon Pacific on Fridays. Subscribe to the TechCrunch Droidcast in iTunes, too, if that’s your fancy.

Why Google Might Just Kill the Nexus Dead

Why Google Might Just Kill the Nexus Dead

Since its inception, Google’s Nexus line has been a showcase for pure, untouched Android in some of the finest hardware available. It’s produced probably the best Android phone yet. And Google would be crazy not to kill it.

Intel-Powered Nexus 8 Could Arrive In 2014

Intel Powered Nexus 8 Could Arrive In 2014The Nexus family of devices from Google has been pretty solid offerings in the past, and for sure Google is not going to quit the hardware market either. We now have heard whispers of an Intel-powered Nexus 8 that might arrive sometime later this year, although you can more or less classify this under the “rumors” section for now. DigiTimes are the ones behind this particular snippet, where according to one of their sources, which so happens to be part of the supply chain, Google could very well drop the 7” tablet that they have marketed in the past in favor of a new Nexus 8 for this year.

Nexus 7 Charging Docks Listed Without Official Availability Date

Nexus 7 Charging Docks Listed Without Official Availability DateWhen it comes to accessories for the range of Nexus devices, those happen to be a rather sensitive topic. After all, it is not all the time that every single one of them have been a success, and neither have they been abject failures, either. With so many third party options to choose from when it comes to protective cases and docks, picking the right one can be quite a difficult task. Of course, the situation was not helped either as Google did not really roll out accessories on a large scale, and the ones that they did were rather pricey in nature. Asus, the one behind the Nexus 7, has listed a couple of new docks for the Nexus 7 recently, but did not mention on how folks living in the US were able to procure one for themselves.

KitKat India Offers Nexus 7 2013 To Winners After Snafu

KitKat India Offers Nexus 7 2013 To Winners After SnafuIt seems that some 1,000 contest winners in India who thought that they managed to win the latest Nexus 7 (2013 model) thanks to KitKat India were disappointed, especially after they were on the receiving end of the regular Nexus 7 – sans 2013, of course. Needless to say, there was plenty of winner rage if you ever saw one, and Nestle claimed that the Nexus 7 (2013) was not available during the time when the contest ended, which was a pretty fair explanation, actually.

After all, it is not as though the folks over at Nestle are involved in making consumer electronics, but rather, they are a confectionary company. This is definitely an oversight of sorts on their part, although legally speaking, they are correct in saying that the Nexus 7 (2013) was unavailable at the time when the contest period was over. Good thing that Nestle has a far bigger heart, and the company has decided to replace the older Nexus 7 with the Nexus 7 (2013) model, even giving out instructions to those who have already collected the Nexus 7. That is definitely a nice public relations coup, and I am quite sure that the winners would continue to snack on some delicious KitKat for many more years to come, don’t you think so? White Nexus 7 Now Available In 32GB Model In The US, UK And Japan For $269

    Nexus7_White_Hero

Google has just released a white version of the Nexus 7 tablet, in white and packing 32GB of storage, available now for $269 on the Google Play Devices store, so long as you’re in the U.S., U.K. or Japan. There’s no LTE version and no 16GB model, unlike with the black Nexus 7, but if you’re looking for a color match tablet for your white Nexus 5 you’re now in luck.

The bezel retains the same black paint scheme, and there’s no change beyond the back panel color job in terms of performance or specs. The Nexus 7 is a fairly capable Android tablet, however, and most likely the best deal available at that particular price point depending on your needs. If you’re looking to grab one, it’s probably a good idea to pull the trigger on that order, quickly, since these are probably going to be in fairly limited supply at launch.

You do have a little more choice, however, as LG has just announced a Google Play edition of the G Pad Android tablet, which has an 8.3-inch screen and costs a bit more at $349.
