Nexus 5′s Launcher Will Be Exclusive To The Nexus 5

Nexus 5s Launcher Will Be Exclusive To The Nexus 5Google’s recently launched Nexus 5 is a Nexus handset in the sense that it will come bundled with a stock Android 4.4 KitKat experience, complete with a UI that will be a stock UI that does away with the glitz and glamor that is typical of Android OEMs trying to make their mark. That being said, the UI of the Nexus 5 is pretty slick and clean, something we can appreciate, along with some subtle features such as making the notification and button bars translucent that helps bring the overall look together. Unfortunately if you were hoping for a similar experience on your Nexus device, like the Nexus 4, once Android 4.4 KitKat has been released, well you’re out of luck.

According to Google, it seems that some features of the Nexus 5 will remain exclusively to the Nexus 5, such as its launcher. One could be forgiven if they thought that the same experience would be brought to their Nexus device, after all wasn’t that the point of having a Nexus phone to begin with? A shared experience of running stock Android? Well apparently the reason behind this move is because Google wants to see how the public reacts to the launcher before deciding if it good enough or in demand enough to bring it onto other devices. Based on this we can only assume that Google may or may not bring the launcher to other Nexus devices in the future, but for now it looks like it will be a Nexus 5 exclusive.

Google Nexus 5′s Camera Compared Against The Nokia Lumia 1020

Google Nexus 5s Camera Compared Against The Nokia Lumia 1020When it comes to smartphone cameras, safe to say the Nokia Lumia 1020 is currently dominating the rest of the competition, which is saying something as camera quality is a serious consideration when someone plans to buy a new smartphone. The question is, how does it stack against the recently released Google Nexus 5? While the Nexus 5’s camera was never really touted as one of its selling points, most reviews found the camera to be OK only, with nothing to shout about, and the comparison photos between the Lumia 1020 and the Nexus 5 certainly speak volumes.

The comparison photos were taken by Felix Hamer and to give the Nexus 5 a fair shot, the Lumia 1020’s zoom and Xenon flash were not used. One of the comparison photos can be seen in photo above, with the top portion of the photo coming from the Lumia 1020, while the bottom is from the Nexus 5. Surprisingly the Nexus 5 is able to hold its own and while the Lumia 1020 is a little sharper, both photos look relatively good and unless you’re planning on printing and framing them, they should be more than passable to be used on Facebook and other social media websites. To see the rest of the comparison photos, hit up AAWP for the details, but in the meantime what do you guys think?

T-Mobile Nexus 5 Launch Rumored For November 20th

T Mobile Nexus 5 Launch Rumored For November 20th

One of the most hotly anticipated smartphones of this year, and Google’s worst kept secret, was finally released last week. Over the past few months we had seen leak after leak of the Nexus 5, now the device is finally out and about, and it has received a very warm welcome indeed. Nexus 5 sold out on the Google Play Store merely hours after its launch and isn’t expected to be back in stock for at least a few days. We hadn’t previously heard that T-Mobile will be offering the device as well, but a purported retain planning guide for November has been leaked which points towards a November 20th launch for the T-Mobile Nexus 5.

T-Mobile hasn’t confirmed as yet if and when it will launch Google’s latest Nexus device. The retail planning guide is an internal T-Mobile document that lists November 20th as the possible launch date. It doesn’t offer any specifics, such as prices or plans that are going to be offered with the smartphone. Getting a Nexus 5 from the carrier would end up costing more in the long run, seeing as how the device can be easily bought from the Google Play Store for as low as $349. Customer who’re not looking to put up this kind of money up front would obviously be better off with the carrier option, they can utilize the carrier’s device installment plans to break down the cost of the device. Nexus 5 Scores 8/10 For Repairability

When it comes to buying a smartphone, there are many factors that one takes into account, with the priority of those factors depending on the user. For some repairability is a major concern because nobody likes paying hundreds of dollars to fix a phone when they can easily just get a new one, right? Well the good news is that if you were planning on picking up the brand new Google Nexus 5, the folks at iFixit have given the device a teardown and have actually rated the phone an 8/10 for repairability, which is pretty awesome, at least compared to the likes of other devices iFixit has rated in the past, with the more recent iPad Air getting a meager 2/10.

In any case the reason behind the Nexus 5’s high scores is due to the fact that the phone does not rely a lot on adhesive, but rather on modular components that are easily replaced. According to their teardown, it would seem that almost all components of the Nexus 5 would be easily replaceable, save for the screen itself which is glued together rather tightly. In any case if you’d like to check out iFixit’s teardown review of the Nexus 5, take a couple of minutes out of your day and check it out in the video above.

    Nexus 5 Review

Nexus 5 ReviewGoogle has just launched the Nexus 5 smartphone, which is going to be the company’s flagship handset to show what a “pure” Android experience should be. The Nexus smartphone is always popular for several reasons: 1/ its price per performance is usually unmatched 2/ OS updates come faster since Google itself is managing them 3/ they are free of carrier-specific software and locks. Since we named the Nexus 7 tablet a “killer product”, the question is: can Nexus 5 reach the same heights in the smartphone space?

As expected, the Nexus 5 fulfills those promises, but you will see that details do matter and that it is extremely difficult to offer the absolute best experience, at half the price. Hardware-wise, the Nexus 5 is the fruit of a partnership between Google and LG, just like Nexus 4 was. As such, Nexus 5 looks a lot like the LG G2, but you will see that it is not quite an equivalent phone like Optimus G and Nexus 4 were. In this review, I will give you a sense of how it is to use the Nexus 5 in the real world. Ready? (more…)
