17,000 Nexus 7 Tablets Donated By Google To Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

17,000 Nexus 7 Tablets Donated By Google To Victims Of Hurricane Sandy

We’ve seen companies contribute to charitable causes in the past, we’ve also seen them help out when tragedy has struck due to natural causes. Take Hurricane Sandy for example, believed to be the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the season last year, as well as the second costliest hurricane in the history of the U.S. To help out the victims, Samsung donated $3 million, Apple contributed $2.5 million and Goal Zero managed to bring $600000 worth of portable power products to bring power to the affectees. An entire year later, in an effort to bolster recovery, Google has donated 17,000 Nexus 7 tablets to libraries, businesses, community and senior centers in the areas affected by Sandy.

Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York said that private donations such as the one made by Google are “critical” in helping the local communities in their ongoing recovery after the superstorm Sandy, adding that they would like to thank the internet search giant for helping them to build back New York better than before. The 17,000 Nexus 7 tablets Google has donated have a retail value of $2.7 million, surely a drop in the ocean for a company of its size. Its a nice gesture though. If you remember, Google also postponed the launch of its Nexus 10 tablet back when Sandy struck.

Google Might Not Go With ASUS For 2014′s Nexus 7 [Rumor]

Google Might Not Go With ASUS For 2014s Nexus 7 [Rumor]As it stands, ASUS is the manufacturer responsible for creating the Google Nexus 7 tablet and if the rumors are to be believed, they could be responsible for 2013’s Nexus 10 tablet as well. Interestingly enough despite the rumors suggesting that Google dropped Samsung in favor of ASUS for the Nexus 10 this year, come 2014 and the next-gen Nexus 7, word on the street has it that Google will no longer be going with ASUS. According to a post by DigiTimes, the reason Google might drop ASUS next year is because the company has been making too many different tablets of their own, which we guess could be either seen as creating too much competition for Google’s offerings, or it could be that Google feels that ASUS might not be concentrating on their products as much.

At the same time the argument has been made that the reason ASUS is cranking out as many tablets as they have is because they could be dropped by Google next year. Then again Google has typically opened up its Nexus products to a variety of manufacturers, allowing them to bid on projects, so perhaps ASUS has had enough or Google might have found someone else who could do a better job. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully if this rumor turns out to be true, whoever takes over next year will be able to do as good a job as ASUS, if not better.

AOKP Android 4.3 Nightly Builds For Nexus 7 2013 And Oppo Find 5 Released

AOKP Android 4.3 Nightly Builds For Nexus 7 2013 And Oppo Find 5 Released

If you follow original Android development closely, you’ll be aware of the fact that there hasn’t been much news coming in about AOKP. The team finally broke its silence today and announced that they’ve been doing a lot of “heavy lifting” in the background to create the “smoothest nightly builds you’ll ever flash.” These are based on Android 4.3, the latest update to Google’s mobile platform which was released last month. At this point in time, AOKP Android 4.3 nightly builds are only available for two devices, the Nexus 7 2013 and the Oppo Find 5.

Earlier today a member of the AOKP team announced that AOKP ROMs now have more than 3.5 million users around the world, which is quite a significant achievement. Custom Android ROMs developed by this team are right up there with CyanogenMod ROMs, which are also some of the most popular custom Android ROMs being used by enthusiasts all around the globe. AOKP Android 4.3 nightly builds for other devices will come later. Since there are nightly builds nonetheless, it is likely that there will be a few issues that haven’t been taken care of. If you do install the ROM on any of the two supported devices, expect to encounter a few bugs, which you can report to the AOKP team for squashing.

Verizon Close To Getting Nexus 7 LTE Certified

Verizon Close To Getting Nexus 7 LTE CertifiedIt was not too long ago when we did mention how the Nexus 7 LTE was more than ready to work on Verizon’s network, but somehow or rather, the thing is not yet available there simply because it has yet to receive the proper certification. Well, here we are now with Verizon Wireless sharing a little bit more on that particular situation, by claiming that the Nexus 7 has already entered its certification process sometime last month, but did not manage to complete the entire slew of relevant testing required for certification. Normally, such a process would require anywhere from four to half a dozen weeks, so in Verizon’s own words, they too, have every single expectation that the new Nexus 7 ought to be certified “shortly.”

The moment that particular milestone is achieved, Verizon has every single plan to work alongside Google so that the Nexus 7 LTE model will eventually be activated on the Verizon network. I do wonder whether it is an oversight of sorts, when Google first announced in July this year that the Nexus 7 will play nice with Verizon’s LTE network, but somehow, did not manage to do so when launched. Nothing quite like some paperwork (or the lack of it) to be a party pooper! [Press Release]
