Samsung Releases TecTiles 2 NFC Tags With Galaxy S4 Support For $15

Samsung had previously released its TecTiles programmable NFC tags for its Galaxy S3 around this time last year, but unfortunately with the release of the Galaxy S4, its TecTiles didn’t support its latest and greatest smartphone. But today, Samsung is […]

Samsung TecTiles 2 pushed out for Galaxy S 4

We heard late last month that Samsung was getting ready to unveil its next-generation TecTile technology, and today the company finally pushed it out to users of the new Galaxy S 4. The phone comes with a newer NFC chip, which makes the previous-generation TecTile tags incompatible. However, TecTile 2 is finally now out available for the taking.

The good news is, these newer TecTile tags are backward-compatible with older Samsung devices that are NFC-enabled, allowing you to use them with your new Galaxy S 4, as well as any other Samsung devices you have lying around, including the Galaxy S III. These tags will allow you to automate a variety of tasks for certain situations, like adjustments to settings and opening up an app with a wave of your phone.

If you’re not all that familiar with TecTiles, they are Samsung-specific NFC stickers that you can program to activate certain phone tasks when the tag and the phone are touched together. You can place these tags all around your house and in your car, which allow you automate tasks, like setting alarms, switching a phone to silent mode, starting up media players, etc.

The downside is that if you’ve invested in the original TecTiles and have upgraded to the Galaxy S 4, you’ll need to grab the newer TecTile 2 tags, which sell for $15 for a pack of five, and are available now online, with availability in stores coming next month.

Currently, the only device that comes with native support for TecTile 2 is the Galaxy S 4, but we’re guessing that future Samsung devices will be utilizing the updated technology as well. As for the advantages of TecTile 2, it seems it’s a bit faster than the previous-generation, with the possibility of extended NFC capabilities, but if you can’t rush out and get new tags now, it won’t hurt you to wait around in order to grab some.

Samsung releases TecTiles 2 NFC tags for Galaxy S 4, available for $15 today

Remember Samsung’s TecTiles NFC-enabled stickers? Well, much to our dismay, they don’t work with the company’s flashy new handset, and Galaxy S 4 owners haven’t had an alternative to stock up on until today. Samsung’s new TecTiles 2, which can perform tasks similar to the smartphone maker’s previous-generation product, are now available, priced at $15 for a pack of five. They’re compatible with all Samsung NFC-enabled Android smartphones, and offer up a variety of functions, such as muting your device when you tap a tag in the boardroom, or checking you in on Foursquare by touching a TecTile in a restaurant, for example. The small square stickers can now be ordered on Samsung’s website — if you’d prefer to pick them up in store, you’ll need to hang tight until June.

Leaf unveils next-gen LeafPresenter Android POS tablet for taking payments

Leaf unveils nextgen LeafPresenter Android tablet for taking payments

You’re at a coffee shop or restaurant and it’s time to pay for your sustenance. After reaching for your wallet, you’re presented with… an Android tablet? This particular scenario is taking place more and more often as small businesses are taking their point-of-sale systems mobile, and Leaf is one of the big contenders battling for market share in this industry. Its signature product, known as the LeafPresenter, is an Android-based tablet with a funky lip on the top right that allows for mag-stripe credit card transactions. While the first-gen version of the device has been out for some time, Leaf is ready to branch out later this summer with a new model that offers more functionality.

In addition to a newer forked version of Android (Leaf OS), the upcoming LeafPresenter throws in NFC, EMV and gift card support, as well as a 2MP front-facing camera, 1,280×800 display and better battery. Last but not least, the new device also includes support for a Leaf-branded third-party app store geared toward small business usage. While there’s no specific cost to the tablet itself, business owners will need to fork over $50 per month for the opportunity to use it. Check the press release after the break for more.

Sony SBH50 Bluetooth headset touts NFC and a smart remote (video)

Sony SBH50 Bluetooth headset touts NFC and a smart remote video

Sony’s Xperia ZR isn’t reaching the market all by its lonesome: it’s accompanied by a high-end Bluetooth headset, the SBH50. The sequel to the Smart Wireless Headset Pro mostly ups the ante with NFC — listeners just have to tap the smart remote against their Xperias (or many other NFC-aware devices) to get going. There’s still the emphasis on higher-than-usual quality for wireless audio; likewise, the remote continues to preview calls and messages, play FM radio and take the owner’s pick of wired headphones. Sony has only committed to launching the SBH50 “soon” and hasn’t mentioned prices, but we’d use the previous headset’s $150 price as a rough benchmark. Catch Sony’s overview video after the break.
