Sony unveils 16.1MP NEX-5T with NFC and WiFi, available this September

Sony unveils 161MP NEX5T with NFC and WiFi, available this September

We assure you, the camera pictured above is not the NEX-5R. Announced today alongside three new E-mount lenses and the A3000, it’s actually Sony’s new NEX-5T. This shooter’s unique feature is the addition of NFC for tap-to-device transfers of videos and photos — a nice complement to the WiFi connectivity. Aside from that, it’s pretty similar to its predecessor. Internally, you’ll find the same 16.1-megapixel APS-C sensor with a maximum ISO sensitivity of 25,600 and hybrid phase-/contrast-detect autofocus for still images. The outside houses the familiar 921k-dot 3-inch touchscreen (with 180 degrees of rotation), a rear-set navigation dial and a function button (both programmable) adjacent to the shutter button. Photographers and videographers alike should be pleased with 1080/60p video capture and continuously focused 10-frames-per-second burst shooting. This NEX can also handle Sony’s various Play Memories Camera Apps for extended versatility.

The NEX-5T is set to launch this September in white, black and silver for $700 with a 16-50mm pancake powered-zoom lens, and $550 for just the body. Moto X Skip dongle hands-on with Moto Maker custom phone

The Moto X is only showing up in AT&T stores today, but since we got our order in early through our Moto Maker walkthrough last week, we’ve had an early opportunity to try out the new Skip security dongle system. Effectively a wearable NFC tag, the Skip clips to your jacket, jeans, or purse, and […]

Unlocking Moto X with the Motorola Skip (hands-on video)

Unlocking Moto X with the Motorola Skip handson video

Motorola’s new Skip NFC smartphone key is quite possibly the simplest gadget we’ve covered at Engadget. But simple as it may be, Skip is a time saver for Moto X users. The tiny device, comprised of an NFC tag, a small piece of fabric and a pair of magnets for securing to an article of clothing, such as a pants pocket or shirt sleeve, ships for free with all Moto Maker orders, and is available as a $20 add-on if you’ve purchased your Moto X directly from a carrier. It’s also bundled with three NFC-enabled stickers that you can affix to your car, a piece of furniture or a personal accessory, like a purse or wallet.

Setting up Skip takes only a few seconds. Assuming you have NFC enabled, tap the Moto X to the Skip or one of the bundled Skip Dots, and a configuration screen will pop up prompting you to pair your device with the tag. You’ll enter your password to complete the process, then any time you need to unlock your phone in the future, all you need to do is tap the two together. Skip might not be the best fit if you keep confidential corporate data on your handset, but assuming your password serves mostly to keep prying eyes away from personal email or text messages, it should do the trick. Catch Skip in action in our hands-on video after the break.%Gallery-slideshow73405%

LG Unveils Lightwave DIOS Oven With NFC Capabilities

LG Unveils Lightwave DIOS Oven With NFC CapabilitiesNot many smartphones out there are equipped with NFC, although it seems that the trend is slowly starting to pick up these days. However for those who do own a smartphone with NFC capabilities, here’s a somewhat novel, albeit useful, way of using it at home. LG has recently announced a new Lightwave DIOS oven that is NFC-equipped. What this means is that smartphone owners with NFC are able to use their smartphones together with the oven. Basically through an accompanying app, the smartphone will be able to list around 220 different cooking options with presets attached to them.

For example if you wanted to roast a chicken but weren’t sure how long, just use the app and it will all be entered into the oven for you, and thanks to the use of NFC, you can browse the cooking options on your phone instead of hunched over the oven fiddling with knobs and buttons. Other features of the oven include an Air Fry mode that uses very little oil and according to LG, will reduce fat intake by as much as 77% which would definitely appeal to the health-conscious customer. No word on when LG will be releasing their Lightwave DIOS or how much it will cost, but what do you guys think? Could you see yourself getting one of these bad boys for your kitchen?

This NFC-Powered Bonus E-Ink Display for Your Phone Needs No Batteries

No matter what you’re doing at a computer, two displays are always better than one, and that could soon be true for your mobile devices as well. Prototypes of dual-display smartphones have already been demonstrated, but researchers have now revealed a wireless second display for your mobile devices that magically sucks the minimal power it requires from a wireless NFC connection.

E-ink displays can be powered wirelessly with NFC

It is widely known that e-ink displays require very little power, one of their biggest bragging points. Because they display static images, power is required only when the image is being refreshed to something new, and as it turns out, NFC provides enough energy to accomplish this. Such was demonstrated in a video we have […]

Tizen NFC Features Shown Off On Video

NFC or near field communication technology has been widely implemented in various premium smartphones on different platforms such as BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Android. Apple has kept itself and iOS out of the fray for quite some time now, none of the company’s mobile devices feature this technology. It seems that Samsung’s homegrown Tizen OS will come with support for NFC from the get go. The NFC features of Tizen have been shown off on video, which hints at the possibility that the first Tizen device will come with NFC.

The video shows off a NFC tag writing app. NFC tags are basically small stickers that can be configured to invoke a number of actions on a mobile device when it is tapped against that sticker, such as calling a number, launching the browser to access a specific URL or even switching Wi-Fi on and off. The possibilities are endless. Looking at this video, one can speculate that perhaps this app will come pre-installed on Samsung’s first Tizen device. This may definitely be a unique plus point for Samsung’s nascent platform. The company has already labelled Tizen as a simple alternative to Android. It is speculated that in a bid to end its reliance upon Android, Samsung is working hard to develop its own platform. Though the company probably won’t switch all of its devices from Android to Tizen abruptly. First Tizen device is expected to come out this October.

Motorola Skip: It’s no digital tattoo, but it should solve Moto X PIN-pain

Motorola’s Skip accessory for the Moto X is the first in the company’s steps to “superpower-like” authentication options, a clip-on NFC dongle intended to preserve both security and simplicity from the context-aware smartphone. Skip – which will initially be bundled with all Moto X orders placed through the Moto Maker site – clings to a […]

Moto X Skip NFC smartphone key official, ships free with Moto Maker orders

Skip for Moto X surfaced on Motorola’s site briefly yesterday, giving us some insight into the company’s new PIN-free unlocking tool before the $20 product was pulled. Today, though, Google’s smartphone arm has returned to detail the new gadget, which is set to ship for free when you order a device through Moto Maker. According to this morning’s blog post, the typical phone user unlocks their handset 39 times each day — in theory, a device like Skip, which clips to your belt, shirt sleeve or anywhere else you want, will help you reclaim several minutes daily. After pairing the compact NFC accessory with your phone, simply tap your device to unlock it. Each kit also includes three Skip dots, which you can stick onto any surface and use in the same way. Initially, Skip will ship in gray with a black accent, but Motorola plans to make colored versions available as well, beginning this fall.
