Nikon D7100 Hands-On Review

Nikon D7100 Hands On ReviewThe Nikon D7100 is the younger sibling of the famous Nikon D7000, a star product which was launched in late 2010. On paper, the Nikon D7100 is much more of an upgrade than its numbering scheme may lead you to believe. First of all, the sensor goes to 24 Megapixel (from 16), the auto-focus (AF) system now samples 51 points, and the video recording mode can shoot up to 1080 at 60 FPS (interlaced) or 30FPS progressive (from 1080/24p previously on the D7000). In addition to that, Nikon as managed to make the body a little lighter – what’s not to like? Finally, a much talked about aspect of the Nikon D7100 is the lack of low-pass filter in the sensor – I’ll tell you more about it since it this generates quite a buzz in the forums. (more…)

DIY Instagram Photo Booth: Say Filter!

Instructables member Alexander Morris made a photo booth that looks like the app icon of the popular image sharing service Instagram. If you’re a fan of the service you might be disappointed to know that Alexander didn’t actually integrate Instagram or any image editing service into the photo booth. But Alex more than makes up for it with the quality of his build.

Just by looking at it you can already tell that Alexander has some serious crafting skills. Inside the beautiful case are two Nikon SB900 flash guns, a Nikon D3200 camera with an 18-55mm lens, a TV that serves as the viewfinder and an Arduino microcontroller to run things. It also has two seven-segment LEDs, but I’m not sure what they display. Perhaps a timer and a total image count?

Google Nexus 5 With Revolutionary Nikon Camera Rumored

Google Nexus 5 With Revolutionary Nikon Camera Rumored

There have been all sorts of rumors lately about the Google Nexus 5. The latest being that the Nexus 5 is going to come with a revolutionary Nikon camera on board. Nikon is one of the market leaders in camera technology and their alleged collaboration with Google in order to manufacture a camera for a mobile device is actually quite interesting. It could pave the way for disruptive innovation in mobile camera technology. (more…)

Google Nexus 5 Could Have Nikon Camera Tech On Board, Report Claims

n4-8mp

Google’s next reference smartphone is the subject of many rumors over the past few days, but only one stands out as not too outlandish. Phonearena reports that according to a source, the next Nexus could have Nikon camera technology on board, with a “triple sensor” array. The camera is being referred to as the “selling point” of the Nexus 5, the source claims.

The tipster in this case also cites more reasonable specs for the Nexus 5, including a 5-inch display capable of 1080p output, a Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM and 8/16GB storage options. There’s also a beefy 3140 mAh battery on board, which should outlast the current device depending on the power requirements of the display. These refute an earlier claim from AndroidandMe about a super-powered 5.2-inch LG device being next in line for the Nexus name, with a bizarre 3GB of RAM supposedly on board.

By contrast, the more recent Nexus 5 spec report makes much more sense in the context of how Google has iterated its flagship Android device in the past. And the Nikon camera tech also echoes an earlier statement from Google’s Vic Gundotra, who said on Google+ last month that Google is specifically “committed to making Nexus phones insanely great cameras,” teasing that consumers need only “wait and see” to realize the truth of that statement.

The one sour note on the otherwise impressive Nexus 4 from Google released last fall is the camera; reviewers mostly seem to rate it either adequate or sub-par compared to cameras in devices like the iPhone or Android handsets from other OEMs. Accordingly, it makes sense that Google would focus attention on improving the camera in the next Nexus, since that would provide good upgrade incentive for those following the brand, and also help Google better show off Android’s built-in camera features, which is one of the primary purposes of its line of Nexus reference hardware.

Google and Nikon have worked together in the past, including on the Nikon Coolpix S800c, which features an Android-based firmware. Google also acquired Nik software last year, makers of Snapseed, and a company Nikon had previously made a sizable investment in.

The sensor of the new camera will reportedly be a three-sensor affair, which sounds like it could resemble the tech used in HTC’s Ultrapixel or Sigma’s Foveon X3 sensors, by combining three sensor layers, each with a smaller megapixel count, to create a single higher resolution image with better color rendering and light capture. This is still very much a rumor, but it’s an interesting one and definitely seems to be in line with Google’s apparent goals for the Nexus line.

Nikon D7100 Could See A $100 Discount On Launch

Nikon D7100 Could See A $100 Discount On LaunchThe Nikon D7100 was announced just last month and if you were thinking about getting your hands on it, it seems that you could be looking at a possible $100 discount come 14th of March, which is when the camera is expected to start shipping. Unfortunately this purported discount will only apply to the camera with the kit lens (18-105mm), so if you were hoping to get the discount for the body-only version, you’d be out of luck. Priced at $1,596.95, if the rumors are true, you should be able to pick it up for $1,496.95 which we guess seems like a pretty good deal. This isn’t the first time Nikon has announced such a deal. In fact they did something similar with the Nikon 1 V2 last year, so it wouldn’t be completely out of the question if they did something similar with the D7100. Either way don’t get your hopes up just yet, but be sure to keep your eyes peeled and mark the 14th of March down on your calendars.
