Nikon reveals D5200 SLR with D7000-taunting specs: 24MP sensor, 39-point AF, wireless port (hands-on)

DNP Nikon reveals D5200 DSLR with improved 24MP sensor, 39point AF, wireless port handson video

The trusty D5100 and D7000 have held sway over Nikon’s low-to-mid DSLR range for around 18 months now, but come December and there’ll be a new option driving a wedge right between them. The D5200 will still fulfill the role of a lightweight “advanced beginner” model and physically it’s the spitting image of the D5100, but at the same time it brings some fundamental and distinctly D7000-like photographic improvements to try to excuse its £720 (body-only) recommended retail price. (Update: that equates to around $1,150, but Nikon tells us that there’s no official US pricing or arrival date at this time.)

The D5200 offers a 39-point AF system for smarter focusing and tracking of moving subjects (compared to the 11-point module on the D5100), a 2,016-pixel RGB metering sensor (whereas the D5100 judged exposure based on just 420 pixels), and a new Expeed 3 processor that permits up to five shots per second (versus the older camera’s 4 fps). There’s also a brand new main image sensor: a DX-format chip that is the same size as the D5100’s and yet somehow squeezes in 8 million more pixels, bringing the effective resolution to 24.1 megapixels. Need more convincing? The camera also has a slightly simpler-looking UI, a stereo internal mic, more choice of h.264 frame rates up to 60 frames per second (in 1080i), and compatibility with Nikon’s admittedly flaky WU-1a wireless adapter. Check out our hands-on video after the break plus a review roundup in the next few weeks, and then, if you’re still not appeased, don’t sweat it: the D5100 and D7000 will continue to be sold for the forseeable, and both with ever-increasing discounts.

Nikon nudges Q2 net earnings to $203 million, DSLRs and Nikon 1 get all the credit

Image

Nikon might be treading water in Q2 2013 (its fiscal year is time-shifted) with a slight gain to $203 million from Q1, but in the current imaging market climate, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Revenue fell $200 million to $3 billion for the period, which Nikon chalked up to a “sluggish” economy and poor performance in its business, chip and science divisions, along with a rapidly shrinking compact camera market (smartphones, anyone?). Fortunately, the company fared better in the interchangeable lens game, singling out the Nikon 1 mirrorless brand as a “solid performer” as well as its popular DSLR line. Nikon predicts more of the same for the rest of the year, with interchangeable lens camera sales growing while other divisions waffle, resulting in a $750 million profit for the year — a mirror-image of 2012.

Nikon D5200 could be announced at Salon de la Photo on the 6th of November

A couple of days ago, we reported that the Nikon D5200 could be announced soon, and thanks to the folks at Nikon Rumors, it looks like the announcement could be taking place on the 6th of November. This is not official, but it seems that there will be a expo held in Paris for photography dubbed the Salon de la Photo, where it seems that it is very likely that Nikon could be unveiling the D5200 there. This is apparently based on previous experience where Nikon, along with other major camera manufacturers, like to unveil new products at events, like the one mentioned above, or during CES, CP+, Photokina and etc. Either way we guess we have a little less than a week to go before we find out if this is indeed the case, so if the rumored Nikon D5200 is a camera you could be interested in, check back with us then for the details.

3D render? The latest submission to deviantART? No, that’s a microscopic photo of the blood-brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo taken by Dr. Jennifer Peters and Dr. Michael Taylor at 20X magnification, and it’s the latest winner of Nikon’s annual Small World Photomicrography Competition. Not surprisingly, the runners-up in the contest (drawn from some 2,000 submissions) are just as impressive — hit the links below for a look at all of them. Those interested in having themselves featured next year (and taking home up to $3,000 in Nikon gear) have until April 30th to get their submissions in for the next competition.

Apple camera RAW update for OS X supports Canon EOS M, Nikon D600, compulsive photography

Canon EOS M

Not every update Apple makes to its RAW support in OS X merits attention, but when a new revision covers several of the biggest camera launches of the year in one fell swoop, we’ll have our eyebrows raised. The company’s not very elegantly titled Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.01 supports the unprocessed photos from Nikon’s ‘starter’ full-frame DSLR, the D600, as well as a handful of hotter mirrorless cameras like the Canon EOS M, Nikon 1 J2, Panasonic Lumix G5 and Sony NEX-F3. Those who aren’t keen on swapping lenses still get native RAW support for higher-end compacts like Canon’s PowerShot G15 and Sony’s Cyber-shot RX100. Provided you’re running the necessary OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, Apple just gave you free rein to pick a cutting-edge camera and shoot (in full detail) to your heart’s content.

Nikon out the mirrorless 1 V2 in North America

Nikon is going full steam ahead in the Mirrorless market and just a year after its first Nikon 1 V1, the Japanese company announced today the new and improved 1 V2! With a design drastically different from the 1 V1, the V2 comes however with a full set of improvements including but not only a new 14.2Mpix Expeed 3A image sensor that will let you shoot amazing slow motion videos at 1200fps but also still pictures at 15fps for 45 continuous frames! The V2 is also capable to shoot 1080 60i and 30p …

Nikon 1 V2 announced

The world of digital cameras is an interesting one, and it was just slightly more than one year ago when Nikon made their first foray into the mirrorless digital camera market with a couple of 1 System cameras, aptly called the Nikon V1 and Nikon J1. Today, we have the Nikon V1’s successor revealed, where the Nikon 1 V2 will continue where its predecessor left off, and obviously it will come with better hardware and performance figures right off the bat. For starters, there the V2 will feature a 1200fps slow motion capture mode, a 3” LCD display that is located on the back, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder, as well as the ability to record videos in 1080/30p and 1080/60i.

You know that the Nikon 1 V2 will ooze with class as it comes in only black or white shades, where your stills are ably captured using the upgraded 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, touting an ISO range of 160-6,400. Not only that, Nikon has thrown in a new Expeed 3A image processor alongside in Nikon’s Advance Hybrid AF so that you can achieve higher speed shooting without missing a beat. Fancy shooting up to 60 frames non-stop using fixed focus? Then the Nikon 1 V2 is right up your alley. [Press Release]

Nikon 1 to receive more lenses

If you happen to own the Nikon 1 digital camera, then you are in for a treat as Nikon has just announced an expansion to their lens range for the Nikon 1 under the 1 NIKKOR lens family. In fact, consumers will be on the receiving end of not one or two, but three new lenses. These new lenses are sure to expand your photo shooting horizon, where they will be the 32mm medium-telephoto fixed focal length lens with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.2 optimal for portraits exhibiting significant background blur; a vibration-reduction (VR) equipped 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6 ultra wide-angle zoom lens that is the first 1 NIKKOR lens to offer a 100° angle of view; and a compact and lightweight 10x zoom lens covering the 10-100mm range of focal lengths with maximum apertures of f/4-5.6, which makes this the ideal lens to tote around everywhere regardless of the situation.

So far, Nikon has remained mum on the actual release dates for these lenses, and neither do we know just how much of a premium will Nikon slap on them, but we do hope to be there to catch the news when it breaks and relay it to our readers! [Press Release]
