Nikon D600 24.3MP DSLR official with remote phone/tablet control

Nikon has revealed its latest DSLR, the 24.3-megapixel D600, its smallest and lightest full-frame camera to-date, with Full HD video recording and a new 39-point AF system. Tipped as the perfect trio-completion with the D4 and D800, the FX-format camera supports ISO 100-6400 (extendable to 50 and 25,600) and has a scene and face recognition system that analyzes 2,016 pixels for brightness, colors, and other information, to help set autofocus and auto exposure.

The same technology is used for 3D subject tracking, which Nikon says is also improved for smaller subjects. The Multi-CAM4800 AF system – borrowed from Nikon’s D4, just like the D600′s EXPEED 3 image processing engine – can be set to 9-, 21-, or 39-point coverage, and can handle a combined aperture up to f/8 with detection down to -1 EV. Meanwhile the 100-percent coverage viewfinder adds selection of different AF modes, so that you can keep the camera to your face but still see which you’ve selected.

Scale-wise, the 700 comes in at 760g (sans-battery, mind) and has magnesium alloy top/rear covers with weather-seals like the D800. It can shoot around 900 shots on a full charge, and takes twin SD cards (supporting SDXC and UHS-I), while there’s USB and HDMI outputs along with an optional WU-1b Mobile Adapter for shuttling off images wirelessly and remotely-controlling the D600 from your phone or tablet.

On the back there’s a 3.2-inch 921k-dot LCD with automatic brightness control, handy for using the D600′s integrated HDR photo mode and other in-camera editing tools. Full HD 1080p video can be recorded in 24p, 25p, and 30p, with the option of 60p, 50p, and 25p in 720p mode; clips are capped at 29 minutes 59 seconds, and there’s a stereo microphone input for audio.

The Nikon D600 DSLR goes on sale later this month, priced at $2,099.95 in the US and £1,955.99 in the UK body-only; it will also be offered as a kit with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens for $2,699.95 in the US and £2,443.99 in the UK. The WU-1b, meanwhile, will be $59.95 in the US and £64.99 in the UK.

Nikon D600 announced

So here we are, after bringing you the alleged full specifications sheet which was leaked earlier today, the real Nikon D600 has just been announced, more or less confirming what we talked about before. The Nikon D600 will be a FX-format camera that boasts of a body which Nikon claims is the “smallest and lightest among FX-format cameras” without sacrificing on performance. Meaning, it delivers excellent basic performance courtesy of its a 24.3-megapixel image sensor. Not only that, underneath the hood you will find a similar EXPEED 3 image-processing engine that already sees action in other high-end Nikon DSLRs such as the Nikon D4, Nikon D800, and Nikon D800E.

Nikon unveils D600 fullframe DSLR 24MP, lightweight, 2,400 handson video

We’ve been watching out for the D600 since images leaked a couple of months ago, and today it’s been made official: a full-frame DSLR that’s priced ever-so-slightly closer to the reach of mortals (read: “high-end enthusiasts”) who perhaps can’t claim everything off their tax. At just shy of $2,100 (update: €2,150 in Europe), the 24-megapixel camera’s US list price is significantly lower than that of the 36-megapixel D800, and undercuts Canon’s rival EOS 5D Mark III and Sony’s brand new full-frame Alpha A99.

What’s more, aside from the resolution, you’re getting something pretty close to the D800 — including a weather- and dust-resistant magnesium alloy build, fast Exspeed III processor, and AF that works down to f/8 — but here it’s all contained in a body that sheds a full 15 percent off the D800’s weight. It feels great to hold a full-frame DSLR like this, which is barely any heavier or more conspicuous than an APS-C shooter like the D7000.

Nikon is also making a big deal out of the fact that the D600 handles wireless transfers and triggers using the new WU-1b widget, which is identical to the familiar WU-1a we reviewed on the D3200 except that it plugs into the camera’s USB port rather than the HDMI port. There’s an Android app to allow your mobile device to communicate with the camera, and an iOS app is set to land by the end of September.

Read on a few more initial impressions and a quick look at the D600’s high-ISO performance.

Nikon D600: A Professional Camera This Loaded Cannot Possibly Be This Cheap [Cameras]

For a lot of people a professional DSLR like the Nikon D800 is something you dream about but can’t afford. The new full-frame Nikon D600 is $800 cheaper than the D800 and packs many of its big brother’s features. Yes, you, the non-professional should be very excited. More »

Nikon D600 full specs and additional image leaked

Rumors about the Nikon D600 started to go around since April earlier this year, where in June there was another leaked image of the device sans the lens in its full frontal glory, followed by more information in the month of August that September 13th is the rumored announcement date for the Nikon D600, alongside a nugget of juicy information that you will most probably be able to purchase a couple of Nikon D600 DSLRs with the same amount of money that you fork out for the Nikon D800. Back to the menu item at the moment; Nikon’s D600 full specifications were said to be leaked, touting a 24.3-megapixel CMOS sensor, ISO 100 to 6,400, 39 autofocus points, a 3.2” LCD display, the ability to shoot Full HD video at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second, and at 720p, you can hit 60 frames per second.

All videos will be shot in H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC format compression, delivering a maximum clip length of half an hour, tops. Heck, you can even have the live feed piped to the D600′s HDMI port as an uncompressed Full HD signal, now how about that? Are you looking forward to the Nikon D600?

Nikon holding press conference in Thailand 13th of September

A few weeks ago we reported on a rumor that the Nikon D600 could be unveiled on the 13th of September. Since it was only a rumor then, it was hard to say if it would pan out. While the Nikon D600 has yet to be officially announced, it looks like something could be happening on the 13th of September as Nikon has officially sent out the invites (via Tech Excite) to a press conference in Thailand. We’re not sure if this press conference has anything to do with the D600, but given that it happens to coincide with the rumors, well perhaps it might not be such a coincidence after all. In any case if you’re looking forward to new Nikon cameras, be sure to check back with us on the 13th of September for the details, so stay tuned for more updates!

Nikon COOLPIX S01: The Teeny Tiny Camera

Marketing a new digital camera can be problematic these days, since most people are happy to snap photos with their smartphones. It’s only when you take a lot of photos that you realize that the camera sensor on your phone might not be good enough for every situation. The Nikon COOLPIX S01 hasn’t got the biggest sensor, but it’s diminuitive size will make it easy to carry around as an adjunct to your smartphone’s camera.

nikon coolpix s01 tiny camera

The COOLPIX S01 has a 1/3 inch CCD sensor that has a resolution of 10.1 MP and a 3x optical zoom lens. It weighs only 96 grams (3.38 oz) and measures 3.03″ × 2″ × 2/3″ in size. In order to reduce its size, Nikon chose to use a built-in battery and eliminate the SD slot. The camera comes with 7.3 GB of internal storage instead, which should be plenty unless you plan on shooting massive amounts of 720p video with it. All controls and dials have been removed so that the camera is completely controlled by its 2.5″ touchscreen.

The COOLPIX S01 will be available in September for $180 in mirror, pink, red, black and white.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 24, 2012

Friday is here once again folks, and what a Friday it was. What started out as a relatively slow news day became very exciting later on, as the jury deciding the Apple and Samsung case delivered their verdict after only three days of deliberation. The verdict? Let’s just say that Apple’s lawyers will be having a celebration tonight. Samsung was found guilty of multiple patent infringements, and a lot of that patent infringement was found willful by the jury. To make matters worse for Samsung, the jury found that it wasn’t owed any damages by Apple. Needless to say, we think there will be an appeal.

This verdict comes on the same day that Tim Cook wraps up his first year as Apple CEO, and elsewhere in the world, a similar lawsuit between Apple and Samsung ended with both companies facing bans in South Korea. Ouch. After a bit of a shake up at the OnLive headquarters, things seem to have calmed down a bit, and Steve Perlman will be staying on as OnLive CEO. LG has teased an incoming smartphone with an S4 quad-core processor, and Google’s legendary I’m Feeling Lucky button has been given a pretty major update. It isn’t the same I’m Feeling Lucky button it once was, of course, but we think it’ll begin to grow on you after awhile.

The presidential campaigns will soon begin receiving donations through text messages, and the Nikon D600 full-frame DSLR camera may be getting a release in September. Speaking of cameras, beleaguered Kodak has come up with a new way to raise some quick cash after patent auctions left something to be desired. The much-rumored iPad Mini has apparently popped up in some photos for a pre-fab case, and it seems that Samsung has a new smartphone called the Galaxy Stellar coming to Verizon, which is all well and good, but Samsung actually has yet to announce the phone or release a list of specs.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has beaten the iPad when it comes to profit margins, and for the third time this week, Rockstar has released a new batch of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots. Astronomers have discovered a pair of new spiral galaxies that have a lot in common with our own, and it would appear that Amazon has leaked its tablet plans through a new advertisement. Wrapping up the news tonight, Facebook is having its developers use the Facebook app for Android in order to get them motivated to fix it, or at least that’s what the rumors say.

As is usually the case here at SlashGear, we didn’t just have news for you today, as Chris Burns provides a review of SuperTooth DISCO 2 for you to check out. Have a good weekend everyone!

Nikon D600 full-frame DSLR tipped for September

It appears that the next generation in inexpensive high-quality cameras may be right around the corner as a report this morning has the Nikon D600 set for a September release. This camera will bring full-frame DSLR action to your mitts for somewhere around $1,500 USD, cutting the price of Nikon’s current full-frame DSLR the D800 in half. How fabulous would it be for you to only have to drop less than a couple K for a camera that’s quite close to the quality you, up until now, had to drop $3 grand on?

This device still appears to be following reports from earlier this year in June with a massive 24.7-megapixel FX sensor heading things up. Inside you’ll also find a 39-point autofocus system as well as ISO maxing out at a massive Hi-2 ISO 25,600 (and a regular range of 100-6400). This device will also almost certainly be able to record 1080p video at 30 frames per second – as all good modern cameras should.

The D600 is currently set to bring on a 3.2″ LCD on the back as well as HDMI output if you want to watch your media directly from the device on your HDTV. The body of this device is being tipped as having water-sealed protection – great for splashy environments. Inside you’ll find a built-in AF motor, no GPS(!), and of course you’ll be using rechargeable Li-ion batteries inside (EN-EL15).

The specifications here come from a list reported by Nikon Rumors and has changed somewhat from the first time the camera was “revealed” in a leak. Information from a new post from that same site revealed the release date as September 13th from reliable sources speaking with the editors there – and generally they can be trusted about these things.

Stay tuned as Nikon ups the ante with low costs and high power this Fall!

Nikon D600 rumored to be revealed on the 13th of September, expected to be half the price of the D800

Back in June, there was a leaked image that purportedly belonged to the Nikon D600. It was expected to be one of the more “affordable” full frame DSLR cameras to be introduced in the market, but so far apart from leaked specs and rumors, no official date has been revealed. Thanks to the folks at Nikon Rumors, it seems that we may now have a possible release date for the D600 along with a possible price as well. If the rumors are to be believed, it seems that we can expect to see Nikon launch the D600 on the 13th of September, which is about a week before Photokina kicks off, and where Nikon is said to be revealing more cameras as well.

As far as its rumored specs are concerned, if you missed our earlier coverage, the D600 will sport a 24.7MP FX sensor capable of shooting ISO 100-6400, a 3.2” LCD on the back and record videos in Full HD mode. Its pricing has also been rumored to be half that of the D800 (which could differ depending on which retailer you buy it from). In any case we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now, but be sure to check back with us in the future for more updates and possible official information!
