It should be no surprise the Wii U hasn’t performed as well as Nintendo may have expected it to as its sales continue to disappoint the company on a regular basis. The latest reports coming from Nintendo continue to show how poorly the console is performing as a total of 460,000 Wii U consoles sold worldwide in the six month period ending on September 30. In total, the Wii U has sold a total of 3.91 million units globally, although Nintendo is optimistically predicting its console will sell nine million units before the end of its 2014 financial year. Nintendo is no stranger to bundling their hardware along with software as we’ve seen them bundle Skylanders Swap Force and New Super Mario Bros. U & New Super Luigi U with their Wii U system this holiday season, and it looks like they’re getting ready to release a brand-new 3DS bundle that not only includes a high-profile game, but also includes a completely unique handheld. One of the things that made the original Nintendo Wii so popular was that rather than being a passive gaming experience where players simply set on the couch, it got players up and active to play many of the video games available. Nintendo carried that active gaming theme on when it unveiled the Nintendo Wii […]
Nintendo will be offering several bundles for its Nintendo Wii U game console this holiday season. Nintendo had previously announced bundles including the Super Mario Bros U bundle and the Just Dance 2014 Basic Pack bundle. Nintendo has now unveiled a new Wii U bundle that features the popular kids game Skylanders SWAP Force. The […]
Over the years, I’ve seen someprettyimpressivecustom-builthandhelds, and here’s another that’s definitely worth checking out. This Nintendo 64 portable system features a beautiful aluminum case, and even aluminum buttons.
It was built by Travis Breen and looks as good as any DIY handheld I’ve seen. He created this beautiful portable system from two big hunks of aluminum, then used a milling machine and lathe to cut out the pieces. He took some inspiration from the design and construction of the MacBook Pro, but says that the console has a “more inviting” textured finish. The finished handheld measures in a fairly hefty 5.65″ wide x 11″ wide x 1.225″ thick, and weighs 2.73 pounds.
I’m not sure on the screen size, but the LCD looks like it’s about a 7-incher. Those five black dots along the bottom of the screen aren’t just decorative either – they’re the power on/off, reset, start, and volume up/down buttons. Each of the buttons and D-Pad are constructed from aluminum and anodized in black.
Under the hood are components from an original N64, along with an EverDrive 64 so he can load up true Nintendo 64 ROM images from an SD card and play them all on the original N64 hardware – a much better solution than using an emulator. And yes, this thing is truly portable. It runs on a pair of 5000 mAH batteries, so it can play for up to 3 hours on a charge. Not bad for a console which you used to have to plug into a wall outlet.
Be sure to check out Travis’ beautiful N64 handheld in the video below:
While the system isn’t for sale, Travis does admit that he might part with it if someone throws enough money at him.
All good things must come to an end, that is one of the cardinal rules of life. The Nintendo WIi, which was originally scoffed at by certain quarters for its “waggle controls”, managed to have quite a fair run in its lifetime to date. The thing is, the console has more or less reached the end of its lifespan, with the Land of the Rising Sun being the first region to discontinue it. Now, we have word that Europe will be joining Japan in this aspect, stopping all shipments of the Nintendo Wii. That would make North America as the Wii’s final bastion, and as we described it earlier a couple of days ago, the Wii’s discontinuation in Japan will not affect the console’s availability in the US, at least not in the immediate future.
Nintendo of America did mention to GameSpot, “There is no change in the status of Wii in the United States and it is available for purchase this holiday season.” For those of you who happen to live in Europe, fret not – I am quite sure that there is still a healthy supply of new and used consoles in stores, as well as the Wii Mini in select territories. Alternatively, you can always make a push for the Wii U, which is what Nintendo would most probably have liked you to do anyways.
When you are having fun, a week can seem to pass by in the blink of an eye, but whenever you are suffering, even a day can feel like an eternity. I would not rank those Pokemon gamers who find themselves weeping over the fact that they have fallen victim to the Lumiose City save bug under the same category of “suffering”, but it would definitely be irritating to say the least. Nintendo did come up with a stop gap measure in the past, and here we are with official word that Nintendo has finally released a patch on the 3DS eShop which will update Pokemon X and Pokemon Y to version 1.1, all the while squashing the Lumiose City save bug, too.
This is a blanket patch, so regardless of whether you were affected by the save bug in the past or no, it does not matter. Not only that, this particular patch would also fix a particular error that some folk had run into when using the GTS with filters. Well, if you happen to play either version of the game, it would be highly recommended to search for the update over on the 3DS eShop, as it is always better to be safe than sorry, right?
Nintendo announced a new Wii U Deluxe set bundle would be making itself available starting on November 1 that would replace the included Nintendo Land for New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U. This doesn’t seem to be the only bundle Nintendo has planned for this holiday season as they will be offering a Wii U Basic set bundle that will include on of this season’s hottest titles for kids: Skylanders Swap Force. Nintendo has announced its latest video game for its ailing Wii U game console. The game is called Wii Party U and the game is attempting to focus on what makes the Nintendo Wii U unique and fun. The game leans heavily on the Nintendo Wii U GamePad featuring its own little LCD screen. Nintendo […]
We know that Nintendo has a couple of games that they are remaking in HD, such as The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and while we expect Nintendo to announce more HD remakes in the future, this is not the company’s main focus. Speaking to a panel of reports, Nintendo’s chief game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, stated that Nintendo is more interested in creating new games for their Wii U console rather than simply remaking older titles in HD. When asked if there is a chance that Nintendo will remake older games, Miyamoto replied by saying, “That’s certainly possible, but most of our developers are working on new games […] We like to have them working on new stuff. HD remakes might be a good project for development partners, so that’s something I hope we can introduce in the future.”
As it stands the Nintendo Wii U isn’t exactly the hottest selling console at the moment, and with consoles like the upcoming Xbox One by Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 by Sony, if anything the competition just got stiffer. Given that Nintendo has many popular titles in their portfolio, some of which are old but classic, could remaking older games into HD be a better idea than making new ones? What do you guys think? Would you prefer to see more HD remakes from Nintendo or are you hoping for newer titles that could hit Mario-like status for this generation?
