Early Sonic Boom Character Designs Were “Traumatic” For The Sonic Team

Early Sonic Boom Character Designs Were Traumatic For The Sonic TeamIf you’re a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog and the Sonic franchise, you’ve probably heard that there will be a new Sonic game that will be released later this year. The title is called Sonic Boom and it will be the third and final Sega game that will be an exclusive to Nintendo.

Sure the game will be naturally getting an upgrade in graphics, as is the case with most new games, but if you have been playing Sonic games for many years and you’ve even followed the cartoon back in the day, you’ll notice that Sonic Booms’ Sonic looks a little different from the past.

Based on feedback spotted around the internet, not everyone is a fan of the new design, but gamers can rest assured that it could have been much, much worse. (more…)

These GIFs Will Make You Nostalgic For Your Favorite NES Games

Before the hi-def graphics of modern consoles, there was the Nintendo Entertainment System—a world steeped in glorious 8-bit imagery. These GIFs by New York-based Brother Brain (aka John McGregor) show how the in-game art compared with real world photos. And somehow, the 8-bit versions are still way more fun.

Analogue Nt Plays NES & Famicom Games: 2000-in-1

Boutique video game shop Analogue Interactive announced that it’s going to release Analogue Nt, a retro console that can play both NES and Famicom cartridges. That’s double the library. Double the dribble. Double the dragon. And probably quintuple the Mario clones.

Analogue Nt is based on the NES hardware but will have support for up to four controllers as well as a case crafted from a single block of aluminum. Analogue Interactive should release more details about the console very soon, seeing as they plan on taking pre-orders by the end of the month.  If their Neo-Geo MVS case mod is any indication, you should expect to pay more than a current gen console for this one.

Running an emulator with a few ROMs on your laptop or smartphone is a great way to scratch a nostalgic itch for a long lost console. But for the full experience, you need a TV to crowd around with friends, real controllers, and of course the hardware. Which is where the Analogue Nt—a gorgeous aluminum NES clone—enters the picture.

Super Mario Wars Episode 4: A New Shirt

Coolest Star Wars/Super Mario Bros. T-Shirt ever? I think so. This T-Shirt takes the original Star Wars poster and mixes in some Mario fun. Mario is a master plumber with dreams of adventure and he is about to meet his destiny.

This shirt takes place in a galaxy far, far away and features Mario, Peach, Luigi and Toad and of course, the evil Darth Bowser. Mario has never looked so heroic, but our Princess is in another Death Star.

It was designed by Creative Outpouring, but for some reason it has disappeared from their RedBubble page for the moment. Hopefully, it’ll return soon. And stay tuned for the sequel, Bowser Strikes Back.

A Look Inside Nintendo’s Company Guide Book

Check out the company guide book that employees at Nintendo receive. It’s a beautiful work of art. This guide gets handed out to people who get jobs at Nintendo.

These images come from Nintendo fan blog Before Mario. Apparently, Nintendo designs a new one every year. The 2014 edition takes visual cues from the company’s past as a producer of hanafuda cards. It features illustrations that show old-school Nintendo toys in hand-drawn style, and provides a detailed company history to new employees.

Apparently, you can still get one if you pass the first few stages of the hiring process, but don’t get a job. Consider it a parting gift.

This is beautiful nerdy stuff, but I can’t help thinking that Nintendo is looking too much like a wasteful government. They have having a tough time financially of late and yet they no doubt spend a ton of money on this kind of thing. Get your gaming act together first, then you can waste money and give out fancy gifts.

Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition Revealed

Good news gamers, if you were planning on getting your hands on Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U when it is released on the 30th of May, you might be interested to learn that Nintendo has recently announced a limited edition version of the game.

This is basically the same version of the game that other gamers can look forward to, although the main difference here is that the limited edition version will come with a real life Spiny Shell! According to the video above, the shell looks more like a miniature toy as opposed to something a little larger, like a plushie, but we’re guessing fans will still be pretty happy about it. (more…)

How has the Wii done for Nintendo?

This article was written on April 26, 2007 by CyberNet.

NintendowiiAs you can imagine, Nintendo is doing pretty good for themselves after the huge success of the Wii. There’s no doubt that their future continues to look bright as the Wii is still hard to find, and the demand is definitely going strong.

While I knew that the Wii was doing well, I didn’t realize how dramatic Nintendo’s profits would be.  Numbers have just been released for the fiscal year ending in March, and Nintendo’s profits have increased by a whopping 77 percent.

    These numbers are pretty astounding:

    • Reported net profit: 1.74 billion dollars (up from 826 million the year prior)
    • Sales: 8.13 billion dollars (up from 4.29 billion the year prior)

Within the first five months of the Wii being released to the public, 5.84 million were sold!

In related news, it’s apparent that the Playstation 2 isn’t going anywhere for a while, despite the fact that the PS3 is on the market. In fact, analysts are saying that the PS2 will continue to out-sell the PS3 for another two years.

In a way, it reminds me of the situation with Windows Vista. While the latest and greatest is available, people are still hesitant and sticking with XP, just as people are sticking to PS2. And clearly there’s a demand for XP, especially after Dell recently brought back XP as an offering on new machines.

I guess this just shows that the latest isn’t always the greatest!
