Nokia Normandy/ Nokia X Release Date, News & Specs Round-Up

Nokia Normandy/ Nokia X Release Date, News & Specs Round UpWindows running on a Mac? Windows Phone running on a Nokia handset? An Intel processor in an Apple machine? All of these did sound extremely improbable at one point in time in the past, but this does not mean that they are impossible. I guess those are the modern day technological equivalents of the four minute mile, and right now we have the Nokia Normandy, also known as the Nokia X, which is an upcoming smartphone that is also rumored to run on Android operating system, which would make it a surprising first for the Microsoft-acquired Finnish company, especially when they have been the staunchest supporter of the Microsoft Windows Phone platform for so long.

Nokia’s Gyroscopic Stabilization Technology Made Available In The Open Market

nokia-lumia-925-preview-01If there’s one thing about Nokia’s smartphones that we do enjoy, it would be its camera features. A good camera is a combination of both good hardware and good software, something Nokia has done really well, and while software can be easily copied, hardware might prove to be a different story, but now according to reports, the technology behind Nokia’s smartphone cameras has become available on the open market. The secret to Nokia’s smartphone camera is apparently due to gyroscopic stabilization, at least in part. Basically what this does is that it allows the camera’s shutter to stay open for longer without blurring the final image (the longer the shutter stays open, the more light gets let in).

In fact that is one of the features that allows Nokia to create devices like the Lumia 929 whose specs weren’t exactly outstanding compared to iOS and Android handsets, but had a camera whose low-light photography managed to beat out the competition. Now this kind of technology has been around for a while and can be found in regular digital cameras, but its application to smartphones is rather unique and Nokia is one of the few companies around who managed to incorporate the technology in its phones. With ST Microelectronics announcing the tech’s availability, we expect that smartphone OEMs will be interested in checking it out. Whether or not they incorporate it into their products remains to be seen, but it looks like Nokia might have just lost themselves one advantage.

Nokia X Android Handset Benchmark Spotted

nokia-x-browsermarkThe nearly mythical Nokia X may be so close to release that Benchmark numbers are starting to appear online. The handset is also known as Nokia Normandy and under the codename Nokia RM-980. Typically, benchmark start appearing online when the device’s software is pretty much done, and optimizations are somewhat in place. Company employees are usually careful not to leak any names, but if the Benchmark numbers start to appear on sites like Rightware.com (the high-profile benchmark developer behind BaseMark X), it may indicate that units have started to go out of the Nokia inner-circle and into a second tier of people who are not as diligent (carriers, retail partners, government entities…) (more…)
