Hands On With Jolla’s First Phone – The “Spearhead Device” For Its MeeGo-Successor Sailfish OS

JollaThe first handset from Finnish smartphone startup Jolla is simply called Jolla. It launched last week, after around two years in the making. TechCrunch got hands-on with the device for a few hours at a London press event, where two co-founders, Marc Dillon and Sami Pienimäki, were also on hand to answer some questions.

Nokia Guru Could Be The BH-121 Touch

Nokia Guru Could Be The BH 121 TouchJust last month, we did bring you word of a possible new peripheral from Microsoft-owned Nokia, which is the Nokia Guru, where there was a leaked image that accompanied it. That leaked image (courtesy of @evleaks) arrived in a shade of cyan blue, where it has been nicknamed Guru for one reason or another. Heck, it might just be known as the BH-121 Touch, as the ‘Touch’ bit would stand for the integrated NFC compatibility. Other than the rumors, we have more or less remained high and dry when it comes to any official information concerning the device, although there were whispers going around that it will be slightly different from what has been spotted in the unofficial rendered images.

The latest leak also pointed to a possible launch of the BH-121 that is set to happen anytime from a fortnight to three weeks from now, which would make it available in time for Christmas. What will the Nokia BH-121 Touch be able to deliver? For starters, this is a Bluetooth headset which will be able to control playback on your Lumia, and the device itself comes with a volume rocker, a play button and a microUSB port. Of course, there will be integrated NFC connectivity that makes life a snap when it comes to pairing with compatible devices.

New Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Touts Camera Capability

Companies would definitely need to do their bit when it comes to advertising their products, so that the masses would be aware of what is going on, and what are the options available for purchase when it comes to filling a need or want. Nokia’s latest ad surrounding their flagship Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone concentrates on one main aspect of this device – the camera itself.

Buttering up the audience by calling them those who “see things differently,” the Nokia Lumia 1020 does come with a camera that is worthy of mention, and in the ad, it touts the seamless integration of the camera alongside Nokia’s software that makes it a truly immersive package to lose yourself in. Needless to say, the ad would tout the capabilities of lossless zoom, not to mention the number of real-time settings which you are able to make with the camera prior to snapping a photo for the road. This 30-second ad spot ends by reminding you that AT&T has a offer with either the Lumia 1020 or Lumia 1520 alongside Nokia’s recently announced tablet, the Lumia 2520 (which we have already reviewed if you want to know more about it). Would such an ad actually cause you to actually consider picking up a Windows Phone-powered device if you have been a staunch Android or iOS supporter all this while?

Nokia’s Lumia 2520 tablet exclusive to John Lewis in the UK from December 4th

UK-centric news is plentiful today while America busies itself with feasts and football. One such announcement concerns the launch of Nokia’s first tablet, the Lumia 2520, which will go on sale December 4th exclusively at John Lewis and affiliate stores. Running Windows RT 8.1, the colorful 10.1-inch tablet will cost £400, while the optional keyboard accessory will retail for an additional £150 when it becomes available “in the coming weeks” (although we can’t say we were enamored with the typing experience in our review). Curiously, John Lewis’ monopoly means you’ll have to go to extra lengths to make use of the 2520’s LTE radio by procuring a 4G data-only SIM from EE or O2. Thus, you also can’t take advantage of any carrier subsidies. There’s no word on exactly when the exclusivity period will end, but if you just have to have one, you know exactly where to go.

Nokia Patent Wants To Use Your Face And Your Mood As Emoticons

Nokia Patent Wants To Use Your Face And Your Mood As EmoticonsEmoticons do a great job of conveying how we feel when we send instant messages. A smiley face could indicate happiness, while a frown could indicate displeasure. But what if there is no emoticon for whatever you’re feeling at the moment, and what if your current expression could do a better job of conveying your feelings? Well according to a new patent from Nokia, it has been suggested that perhaps your phone will be able to detect your mood and snap a photo of you at the moment and use that as an emoticon instead.

How your phone will detect your mood will rely on factors such as your typing speed, your typing pressure, and the use of the back space key. For example if one were excited about an upcoming holiday with friends, you could be typing really fast (because you can barely contain your excitement) to the point where you might be pressing harder than you’d like on your display, and could be causing a lot of typos hence the excessive backspacing. Once the phone has detected your mood, it will then launch the front-facing camera which will then take a snapshot of your face to be used in place of normal emoticons.

It sounds like a pretty novel idea, but at the same time kind of creepy. We’re not sure how we feel about our phones being able to detect our moods, but what do you guys think?

Nokia Lumia 2520 Purchase Gets Free Nokia Power Keyboard

Nokia Lumia 2520 Purchase Gets Free Nokia Power KeyboardIf you are still in two minds about picking up the Nokia Lumia 2520, then perhaps it is time you gave our in-depth review a good read before arriving at a purchase conclusion. Assuming you are lusting after this device but somehow or rather, have not managed to pick it up until now, then you will definitely be pleased to hear that Nokia is throwing in a free Nokia Power Keyboard for those who have decided to pick up the Lumia 2520 before December 2nd.

This is a pretty sweet deal, especially when you consider that the Nokia Power Keyboard itself retails for $149 a pop. How do you make use of the Power Keyboard? For starters, it will be attached to the back of the Nokia Lumia 2520, where it works to offer a degree of protection to the device’s 10.1” display when closed. When you open up the Power Keyboard, it would then show off a physical keyboard, trackpad and a stand in order to prop the tablet up. Apart from that, this Power Keyboard will also be accompanied by two USB ports in addition to a battery pack which theoretically, will be able to give the Lumia 2520’s battery life a boost of up to 50%.

    Nokia ‘Moneypenny’ Dual-SIM Variant Rumored

Nokia Moneypenny Dual SIM Variant Rumored

Recently a few codenames for several unreleased Nokia smartphones were leaked, “Moneypenny” was one of them. Interesting choice codename there, straight out of James Bond. Nevertheless, its highly unlikely that the codename is going to be used as the official branding for this Lumia device, whenever it is released. At this point in time not much is known about these devices, but according to the ever trustworthy Twitter leaker @evleaks, Nokia is also planning a dual-SIM variant of its “Moneypenny” device.

The possibility of a dual-SIM variant raises a few questions. For example, is this device going to be a high-end Lumia device that just so happens to be available in dual-SIM as well or if its a low-end device with the dual-SIM variant. In markets where such variants are often released, its common to see low end smartphones with dual-SIM capabilities, high-end devices usually don’t come in this particular configuration. @Evleaks has also said that this will one of the first few devices that will come with Windows Phone Blue pre-installed. Windows Phone Blue is a major update for Microsoft’s mobile operating system that’s due early next year. Given the fact that Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services division has been approved, its likely that this device might not come with Nokia’s name on it, though Microsoft is free to use the Asha and Lumia brands as it pleases.
