Nokia Lumia 1520 reaches the UK on December 6th, starting at £80 on a £38 per month plan

Nokia Lumia 1520

Brits who’ve been yearning for the Nokia Lumia 1520 will soon get their chance. The supersized Windows Phone is now due to reach the UK on December 6th, when it will be available through O2 at retail and Vodafone through the web. Third-party retailers like Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u will also stock the 6-inch flagship. While the exact pricing will vary, Vodafone will sell the phone for £80 when it’s attached to a £38 per month plan and a 2-year contract; it will be available for free if you subscribe to a beefy £47 plan. The 1520 will undoubtedly be one of the more expensive handsets in the country, then, but it may be worthwhile for those who want one of Nokia’s most powerful devices.

Nokia Commands 90% Of Windows Phone Install Base

Nokia Commands 90% Of Windows Phone Install BaseA few years ago, many were surprised by Nokia’s decision to throw their lot in with Microsoft and their Windows Phone platform. Symbian was obviously fading, and fast, and MeeGo on the Nokia N9 was a one-time deal for whatever reason, leaving Windows Phone and Android open as options. Android was the more obvious choice given the fact that it would be free for use, and how it is more popular, although it seems that Samsung’s dominance might have been a bit of a put-off. In any case fast forward to 2013 and according to recent numbers released by AdDuplex, it has been found that Nokia commands a whopping 90% of the Windows Phone market.

Basically this means that almost every Windows Phone out there today is a Nokia Lumia handset, and given that Nokia’s numbers in 2013 had them at 76%, this is a pretty impressive jump, demonstrating how Nokia has clearly dominated the Windows Phone market. To that end it is not surprising that Microsoft would want a piece of that action, where they would be able to control not just the software, but the hardware side of things as well, just like what Apple is doing with their iOS devices, and what Google is trying to do with their Nexus phones and tablets as well.

Redbox Instant hits Windows Phone, will remain Lumia-exclusive for 60 days

After launching on iOS and Android almost a year ago, the mobile version of Redbox Instant by Verizon has finally arrived in the Windows Phone Store. Aside from a few cosmetic changes and added Live Tile support, the new app works exactly like its cross-platform counterparts, offering movie streaming and maps to nearby Redbox kiosks. An $8 monthly subscription also covers the rental fees for up to four DVDs, although customers can upgrade to Blu-ray discs for an additional dollar. The bad news is that the app’s exclusive to Nokia’s Lumia range right now — plebes with other WP8 devices will have to wait until the end of January for general availability.

EU Expected To Approve Microsoft-Nokia Deal

EU Expected To Approve Microsoft Nokia DealA few days ago, Nokia’s shareholders got together to approve the Microsoft-Nokia deal which would see Nokia’s cellphone division acquired by Microsoft for $7.17 billion as well as take up residence in Nokia’s offices in Finland. Of course this is just one of the many hurdles that Microsoft and Nokia will have to endure and will need to seek approval from other regulatory bodies before proceeding, such as the EU, for example. Well the good news is that according to a report from Reuters, they claim that the EU is expected to give the Microsoft-Nokia the greenlight as well, although as it stands this is not official yet.

This is according to people familiar with the matter, who claims, “The (European) Commission is expected to clear the deal without conditions.” Neither the EU nor Microsoft and Nokia have commented on the issue, although with a deadline set for the 4th of December, we guess we won’t have to wait much longer to see if this pans out. As it stands other regulatory bodies from Russia, India, Turkey, and Israel have pretty much given the deal their blessing, so safe to say it looks like this is almost a done-deal.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Low On Stock In Stores As Well

Nokia Lumia 1520 Low On Stock In Stores As WellRecently we reported that apparently due to shortages in supply, the Nokia Lumia 1520 could have been delayed for AT&T customers and those who ordered from Microsoft’s online store as well. Now if you were thinking that it might be a better, if not clever, idea to head on over to your local AT&T store to pick up the handset in person, you’d be out of luck too. According to the folks at WPCentral who first reported the original low supply, they claim to have called around several AT&T outlets and found out that they were low on stock too. In fact some outlets claim that they have to receive any of the handsets at all!

Of course you can always try your luck and call your local store to see if they have stock too, or perhaps try one of Microsoft’s retail outlets as well, but there’s no guarantee that they might have them in stock either. We’re not sure what the reason is behind this apparent low stock. It could either be that AT&T did not anticipate such high demand for the phone and did not order enough units, or Nokia could be at fault here for not producing enough to begin with. Either way hopefully this issue will sort itself out soon. Until then keep trying!
