Nokia Music App Updated And Rebranded To Nokia MixRadio

Nokia Music App Updated And Rebranded To Nokia MixRadio

Nokia Music, a music app that the Finnish manufacturer had released for Windows Phone, has received a major update today which also rebrands it. The app is now called Nokia MixRadio. Its basically a subscription free music streaming service that doesn’t taint the user experience with advertisements. It doesn’t come as a surprise that Nokia has focused on personalized radio, that certainly seems to be a point of focus for music streaming services these days.

Nokia MixRadio app only works with Windows Phone 8. That said, it has an all new look with emphasis on making it easier for users to find music that they never would have found had it not been for MixRadio. It offers access to over 18 million songs and contains more than 150 playlists personally curated by the company’s “mixologists.” Users can download up to four playlists for free, these can played even without an internet connection. Those who want unlimited downloads can subscribe for premium features by paying $3.99 per month. Play Me is a feature that learns the user’s listening habits and creates a constant stream on music based on that, it gets better with every listening session. Nokia MixRadio is available as a free download from Windows Store, the app is exclusive to Lumia smartphones compatible with Windows Phone 8.

Nokia Camera Update Brings RAW Support To Lumia 1520 And Lumia 1020

Nokia Camera Update Brings RAW Support To Lumia 1520 And Lumia 1020

Some of Nokia’s latest devices are known for their imaging capabilities, take the Lumia 1020 for example, its the only Windows Phone 8 device out there with a 41 megapixel camera. The company recently unveiled the Lumia 1520, a WP8 phablet with a 20 megapixel PureView camera. Nokia also released an app called Refocus recently, which lets users shift focus in an image even after it has been snapped. Today, a new update for Nokia Camera app has been announced which brings RAW support to the Lumia 1520 as well as the Lumia 1020.

Digital cameras typically save pictures in JPEG format as the pictures are automatically processed. An image in RAW format is untouched, which allows the photographer to process it manually using softwares such as Adobe Lightroom. While RAW compatibility might not appeal to the average user, it will definitely make photography enthusiasts salivate. Once the app is downloaded, users will have to manually select the RAW DNG setting in the camera settings menu. The file size of the image will be significantly larger than a JPEG file. Lumia 1520 isn’t available in the market as yet, but it will be on November 22nd. Customers who receive their devices that day will be able to download the Nokia Camera app right away. Lumia 1020 users will have to wait until early 2014 though, as support for RAW will be part and parcel of the Lumia Black update.

Nokia rebrands Music service as Mix Radio, updates Windows Phone app to match

Nokia’s Music service has been a secret weapon for Lumia owners — they get ad-free radio streaming on their phones at no extra cost. The company is driving that advantage home today by rebranding the service as Mix Radio (reflecting the service’s main feature) and launching an updated music app to match. The new Mix Radio client centers on Play Me, a personalized stream defined by a few favorite artists. There are also Pandora-style thumbs-up and thumbs-down votes to refine the selection, and it’s now easy to share mixes through email, Facebook, text messages and Twitter. As before, avid listeners can spend $4 per month to get unlimited downloads, improved quality and web listening. Current Lumia users just need to update their existing Music app to take advantage of Nokia’s smarter audio experience.

Viber To Land On Trio Of Nokia Asha Phones

Viber To Land On Trio Of Nokia Asha PhonesI am quite sure that any smartphone user worth his or her salt would have heard of Viber before, where it happens to be one of the most popular messaging and social networking apps to date. Well, what happens when you are still rocking to one of those feature phones instead of a modern smartphone with all the relevant bells and whistles to keep you connected at all times? Fret not, as Viber is now available for those who are rocking to the Nokia Asha 308, Asha 310 and Asha 311.

As it stands, there are more than 200 million Viber users worldwide, and with the proliferation of the Asha devices elsewhere in developing countries, you can be sure that the 200 million plus figure is set to go nowhere else up up. With Viber, one is able to send regular messages via the app as well as hold conversations with friends, making it a snap to attach an accompanying photograph, followed by shipping them off over a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. Not only that, making voice calls using Viber is also a possibility, now how about that? Hopefully we would not see any more hacks by malicious parties any more down the road like what happened earlier this year.

Nokia’s Donggun Factory Workers Go On Strike

Nokias Donggun Factory Workers Go On StrikeEarlier today, Nokia’s shareholders voted for the Microsoft-Nokia acquisition deal and ultimately gave it their approval. After all news of the approval already saw their stock prices doubling, so why not, right? Well it turns out that despite the majority seemingly OK with the deal, there are some who appear to be against it. It seems that some of Nokia’s factory employees in China have decided to go on strike, with a large banner (pictured above) that supposedly reads, “Workers are not simple merchandise, assets or slaves. Please do not sell us. We have DIGNITY and RIGHTS!”

The reason behind the strike is apparently due to Nokia putting their factory in Donggun on hold temporarily for whatever reason, and the workers aren’t too happy about the reduced salary during this period of non-work. However according to sources, Nokia’s other factories are still operational, so perhaps this pause on the Donggun factory might not necessarily be related to the Microsoft-Nokia deal. Nokia’s factories are expected to be transferred over to Microsoft as part of the deal, so it is believed that these workers are striking perhaps in a bid to curtail any negative impact this might have on their jobs. Either way hopefully more information will be made available soon.

Stephen Elop Heavily Criticized At Nokia’s Shareholder Meeting [Report]

Stephen Elop Heavily Criticized At Nokias Shareholder Meeting [Report]

Earlier today Nokia’s shareholders met in Finland to vote on the $7.17 acquisition deal made with Microsoft. The deal was approved by an overwhelming majority, 99.7 percent of the shareholders voted in favor. However, it appears that outgoing Nokia CEO Stephen Elop might have been the target of immense criticism at the meeting today. According to one of Finland’s oldest publications, Uusi Suomi, several shareholders were quite vocal in their criticism of Elop, some even described his reign as a “triple-A-flop.”

It didn’t end with just one remark, apparently, as Elop was also reportedly blamed for “the funeral of Nokia phones” and for putting the company itself on the “road to ruin.” The publication reports that matters got so heated during the meeting that the chairman Manne Airaksinen told shareholders present there to refrain from passing any person comment about Stephen Elop. This isn’t the first time that Elop has been criticized in Finland. The country’s press hasn’t been too fond of him particularly after he reportedly refused to accept anything less than the $25 million payday he’s entitled too, despite the fact that under Elop Nokia’s share price and market share dipped considerably. As the transaction closes by Q1, 2014, Elop will move to back to Microsoft where he’s apparently being considered for the CEO slot.

Nokia Shareholders Have Approved Sale To Microsoft

Nokia Shareholders Have Approved Sale To Microsoft

The world marked its calendars for November 19th when it was first announced that Microsoft has agreed to acquire Nokia’s phone business for $7.17 billion. The Finnish manufacturer’s shareholders were to vote on this deal today, and they have done so in favor of the deal with overwhelming majority. 99.7 percent of the votes have returned in favor of Nokia’s phone business being sold to Microsoft, which means that Redmond now has the all clear, at least from Nokia. While some shareholders might have been upset that the iconic Finnish manufacturer will no longer slap its name on devices, that didn’t tilt the vote against the deal in any major way.

As a result of this deal, ex Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will now head back to Redmond where he will take charge as the head of the devices and services team. His name has been rumored to be in the running for the CEO slot at Microsoft, so it remains to be see if he ultimately becomes Ballmer’s replacement. Microsoft gets to keep the Asha and Lumia brands, though it remains to be seen how the company integrates them with its own branding strategies. Ballmer has already said that they could go with shorter device names, but at this point in time, nothing has been said about future devices. Microsoft looks to close the transaction by Q1, 2014.
