Nokia’s shareholders approve sale of devices and services business to Microsoft

As expected, the sale of Nokia’s devices and services business to Microsoft has been given the stamp of approval from the Finnish handset maker’s shareholders. The group met this morning in Helsinki to give its official vote of confidence on the $7.35 billion transaction includes not only devices, but also Nokia’s mapping service too. It remains to be seen if CEO Stephen Elop will be tasked with the same job at Microsoft after Ballmer’s departure, or if the company will decide to take another road toward its future.

Microsoft gets the green light for Nokia buyout

The first time we mentioned that Microsoft was considering buying out the hardware portion of Nokia was back in June of this year. Microsoft announced in September that it would continue to license Windows phone to other customers after the Nokia purchase. The purchase deal was subject to certain closing conditions. One of the major […]

Nokia Shareholders Expected To Approve Microsoft Acquisition Later Today

Nokia Shareholders Expected To Approve Microsoft Acquisition Later TodayLater today, Nokia’s shareholders are expected to convene and vote on the approval of the sale of Nokia’s handset division to Microsoft, although it should be noted that this does not cover the approval of the Patent License Agreement or the HERE licensing arrangement as well. It is expected that there will not be much opposition to the acquisition by Microsoft as Nokia shareholders have seen the company’s share prices doubled since the deal was announced back in early September. Assuming all goes well with shareholders and regulatory boards approving the acquisition, the deal is expected to conclude in the first quarter of 2014.

Both Microsoft and Nokia have  had a pretty special partnership with each other over the past few years, with Nokia pretty much putting all their eggs into Microsoft’s Windows Phone basket, a move which surprised many given that the Windows Phone platform was struggling at that time. While Windows Phone is still a pretty small player in the smartphone market, it has managed to grow, partly thanks to the efforts of Microsoft and Nokia, with the Finnish company rolling out some pretty impressive Windows Phone devices which have surprisingly caught on in emerging markets. What do you guys think? Are you for this acquisition, or do you think that Nokia should not have sold themselves to Microsoft?

Verizon Nokia Lumia 2520 release goes off-contract

The very first modern Nokia tablet will be arriving in the form of the Nokia Lumia 2520, and it’ll be hitting both the likes of AT&T and Verizon here in the United States. With Verizon, the tablet has been announced today as coming on the 21st of November and offered in both on- and off-contract […]

Nokia Lumia 2520 Arriving On Verizon 21st November

Nokia Lumia 2520 Arriving On Verizon 21st NovemberIf you were planning on getting your hands on Nokia’s latest Windows tablet, the Lumia 2520, you might be interested to learn that Verizon has officially announced the tablet’s availability for the 21st of November, a day ahead of AT&T’s own offering which is set for the 22nd of November. The tablet will be priced for $499 but if you don’t mind being tied down to a contract with Verizon, the tablet can had for $100 cheaper, but as to whether you think that’s a good deal or not is really up to you.

We knew the Lumia 2520 would be arriving on Verizon although we did not know when. We had heard the rumors that Verizon and Nokia were planning on launching the Lumia 929 on the 21st of November alongside the Lumia 2520, so it looks like at least half of that rumor panned out. Still no word on the Lumia 929, but presumably since that is a new device, Verizon and Nokia will want to deal with its announcement separately. The Lumia 2520 will be Nokia’s first foray into the modern tablet scene and it will be interesting to see if the Finnish company’s reputation will be able attract customers to the device, despite the somewhat bad rep that Window RT devices have been getting.

Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet reaches Verizon on November 21st for $500 contract-free

Nokia Lumia 2520 reaches Verizon on November 21st for $500 contractfree

Verizon isn’t going to let AT&T hog all the Lumia 2520 buyers this weekend — it just announced that it will start selling Nokia’s Windows RT tablet on November 21st, one day before the device is available at AT&T. Pricing will remain the same at $500 contract-free or $400 on a two-year term, but Verizon is sweetening its deal by offering a carrier-appropriate red model to online shoppers; retail customers will have to be content with black. There’s no word on 2520 variants for other carriers, but it’s good to know that Americans will have at least some choice in networks when picking up Nokia’s LTE-equipped slate.

Nokia Music To Arrive On iOS And Android In The Future (Rumor)

Nokia Music To Arrive On iOS And Android In The Future (Rumor)There are whispers going around that Nokia is working on a version of Nokia Music which will be released on both iOS as well as Android mobile operating systems, at least according to an allegedly leaked graphic. This particular app will currently offer streaming music to Nokia Lumia and Asha smartphones, and not forgetting about Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT devices, too. If Nokia decides to expand the service’s reach, it would be a step that is more than welcome by many, I believe.

So far, there were images that were spotted over on Sina Weibo by CTechCN that depicted how Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and Android fell under the heading of “Platform Support.” It was once thought that the Android and iOS versions would end up as applications on the Web instead of a native application. Should this particular rumor turn out to be true, then Nokia could actually make back some of its investment in the service. Google Play Music recently arrived on the iOS platform, and boy, did it take quite some time to do so! You know what they say, good things always come to those who wait. Do you think that this cross-platform Nokia Music idea is a good one?

Nokia Lumia 1520 first-impressions – Windows Phone goes big

You asked for a big Windows Phone, and Nokia is delivering just that with the Lumia 1520. Headed to AT&T imminently, the 6-inch phablet not only bears the biggest screen on a recent Nokia, but the fastest processor ever inside a Windows Phone, the highest display resolution, and what’s arguably the most rational compromise of […]

Nokia 1520 Review: A Burden in My Hand

Nokia 1520 Review: A Burden in My Hand

Is a device with a 6-inch display even a smartphone anymore? The Lumia 1520 is so comically large that doing ordinary smartphone things with it feels like you’re making a joke. At its best, the 1520 is a funny party trick. At its worst, it’s absurd.
