Today we’ve seen Nokia’s financial Q3 results for 2013 and – though overall numbers leave something to be desired – it would appear that their “smart” phones strategy with Lumia and Asha is working. We’ve had a peek at Nokia’s results and cross-referenced with the IDC’s most recent numbers. We had a chat with the […]
When it comes to smartphone cameras, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is no slouch. In fact some consider it to have the best smartphone camera on the market at the moment, beating out the likes of Apple’s iPhone 5 which some consider to be one of the better cameras on the market. But how good are we talking about? Would you be able to tell if a video was shot entirely with the Nokia Lumia 1020? Well we certainly couldn’t and if you have a few minutes to spare, you might want to check out the music video above which features Ellie Goulding’s “How Long Will I Love You” song. (more…)

Nokia Sold 8.8 Million Lumia Smartphones In Q3, Sees 19% Increase Quarter-On-Quarter
Posted in: Today's ChiliNokia has announced that it sold 8.8 million Lumia smartphones globally in Q3, 2013, registering a 19 percent quarter-over-quarter increase. The budget Lumia 520 contributed handsomely to this bump in sales, Nokia Lumia 520 has proved to be quite a popular smartphone in certain markets. Nokia revealed these figures as part of its third quarter results, ending September 2013. Net sales for the quarter brought in $7.85 billion. Nokia’s total number of units sold has also increased by 4 percent. Total smartphones and feature phone sales reached 55.8 million units, thus amounting to an operating profit of $162.4 million.
In the previous quarter, Nokia was able to sell 7.4 million Lumia smartphones, but suffered an operating loss of $150 million. Looking at the entire year so far, the company’s total sales have dipped nearly 22 percent. It is evident from the results that the company is gradually gaining ground in North America. Over the summer, Nokia sold 1.4 million phones in North America, an increase of nearly four times as compared to sales in summer 2012. The next quarter will be even more important for the company as we get to see how its new Lumia 1520, 1320 and Lumia 2520 tablet perform in the market. Its $7 billion acquisition by Microsoft is also expected to be completed by Q1, 2014. Nokia’s shareholders are going to vote on the acquisition on November 19th in Helsinki, Finland.

It would appear that we’ve got a bit of a rarity going on this quarter for phone and smartphone shipments across the world according to the IDC. This device tracker seeks out shipment numbers, you should keep in mind, not smartphone and non-smartphone sales, so you’re not seeing the end result, just the part of […]
Nokia Reports Net Sales Of €5.66B, €118M Profit, And 8.8M Lumias Sold In Q3
Posted in: Today's ChiliNokia may be going through a hell of a transition period, but it released its fiscal Q3 2013 earnings this morning just like clockwork. The Finnish phone maker (for now, anyway) reported net sales of €5.66 billion (or $7.79 billion) in the quarter ending September, along with a surprise profit of €118 million ($162 million).
To put it mildly, those are big, big gains over Nokia’s past performance – the company posted a €115 million loss last quarter, and a whopping €564 million loss this time last year. Meanwhile, analysts expected the Finnish phone maker to report earnings of zero cents per share (which happens to be in line the figure Nokia put up last quarter) and €5.9 million in revenue in the days leading up to the release.
There’s been a considerable amount of movement on the smartphone front as well, as Nokia reported selling 8.8 million Lumia devices in Q3, up from the 7.4 million sold last quarter and the comparatively dismal 2.9 million back in the year-ago quarter. Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop ascribed that growth to a slew of recent product releases and some savvy over-investment during its early Windows Phone days, but it probably doesn’t hurt that BlackBerry – the dark-horse candidate for the 3rd place spot in the smartphone race – has definitely seen better days.
But it won’t be long at all before the nature of these earnings releases changes on a fundamental level – after all, Microsoft announced back in September that it would acquire the entirety of Nokia’s Devices and Services business for $7.2 billion in a deal that’ll close in early 2014, so we’ll eventually see the remnants of Nokia focusing on its network and HERE Maps segments. That said, net sales for both divisions this past quarter were down sequentially (NSN, formerly Nokia Siemens Networks, was down slightly with €2.6 billion while HERE dipped to €0.2 billion), making for some generally flat year-over-year growth. That’s far from a bad thing in this case though – as The Verge’s Aaron Souppouris points out, a smaller Nokia that focused solely on networks and mapping would be even more profitable than the beast we see right now.
Meanwhile, that hardware shift wile eventually change the fortunes of both companies. The move is a big (if unsurprising) get for Microsoft, which has been cautiously shifting further into consumer hardware and could use a considerable boost for its Windows Phone platform. Of course, the announcement hasn’t exactly been bad for Nokia either – its stock price jumped shortly after the acquisition news broke and has largely stayed at those elevated levels through today.
That’s not to say that the New Nokia will never again churn out a phone though, as the company will regain to right to sell low-end feature phones in 2016.
This is a developing story, please refresh for updates.
After going back and forth, with rumors claiming yes, but with company executives saying no, Instagram is finally making its way onto Windows Phone devices. This was revealed last week during Nokia World where along with the Instagram announcement, other Nokia devices and services were announced. While an official date for the launch of Instagram for Windows Phone has yet to be determined, Nokia has recently posted the image above on their Twitter account with a message that reads, “You did it! Thanks to you, Instagram is arriving on Nokia #Lumia in the coming weeks.” (more…)

When Nokia announced a couple of years ago for forgo Symbian in favor of Microsoft’s Windows Phone handset, many were perplexed especially since Windows Phone was hardly the most profitable platform at the moment, and we guess the best alternative would be Google’s open-sourced mobile platform, Android. Speaking with The Hindu newspaper, Nokia’s Stephen Elop revealed rather candidly that Nokia’s investment in the Windows Phone platform was overinvested on purpose in a bid to help the operating system build some momentum. When the Nokia Lumia 1520 for AT&T was leaked, it revealed that the device would come with what was presumed at that time, a Qi-standard wireless charger built into the device. Unfortunately it was revealed later that not only did AT&T’s Lumia 1020 come with only 16GB of default storage, but it also dropped the built-in Qi-standard wireless charging feature. The good news is that if you wanted wireless charging, you still have that option albeit in the form of a wireless charging shell that is from PMA (Power Matters Alliance), which is essentially the Qi standard rival. This has since been confirmed by Don Mooers, the Director of Device Product Marketing at AT&T.
“In an effort to move toward making this a reality for consumers worldwide, we’ve placed our support for the public ecosystem roll out led by Power Matters Alliance (PMA). The PMA continues to expand membership and is building a strong ecosystem for wireless charging. The PMA solution is already installed at leading coffee shops, airports, stadiums, restaurants, gyms and more, which enables customers to wirelessly charge their phone while on the go.” AT&T did state that they are working to get PMA embedded into hardware in the future, but for now wireless charging for the Lumia 1520 will be a separate accessory.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is probably one of Nokia’s best camera phones to date and so far based on what we have heard, it is comparable, if not better, than the top smartphones out there like the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S4. In any case what’s the point of having such a great camera on a smartphone if you don’t know how to use it, right? Well it looks like Nokia is attempting to right the wrong because over in Russia, it seems that Nokia Russia is offering their Lumia 1020 customers free photography lessons that will hopefully improve their photography skills, allowing to fully take advantage of the Lumia 1020’s camera.
The photography lessons are conducted online and will be held with Russian photography school, fotoshkola.net that is worth around $40. The tutorials will be delivered by famed Russian photographer, Vladimir Kotov, and students will also be expected to work on homework assignments and have their photos reviewed by a team. For Russian Lumia 1020 owner if you guys want to take advantage of this promotion, all you’d have to do is install the Fotoshkola app on your device, in which you will receive a PIN that allows you to redeem the lessons for free. This offer is valid until the 14th of January 2014. Pretty awesome idea we reckon; who else would love to see Nokia offer this to other Lumia users around the world?

Nokia Lumia 929 Leaked On Video
Posted in: Today's ChiliPrior to Nokia World 2013, rumors about a number of unannounced devices were going around. One of those devices was the Nokia Lumia 929. Almost all of the rumored devices were officially announced at the event, but the company didn’t even mention the Lumia 929. That’s probably because this device is said to be an exclusive offering to just one carrier in the U.S., but still, people are wondering exactly when this smartphone is going to come out. Well that is not known up till now, but a new video has surfaced online which shows off the Nokia Lumia 929 in all its glory.
We’ve already heard a lot about the Lumia 929 in the past. It is said to have a 5 inch 1,920×1,080 pixel resolution display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quadcore processor, 20 megapixel rear camera and Update 3 of Windows Phone 8. The video shows the About and settings screen of the device, and also provides a look at its design. It has the familiar square design upfront, but has a rounded back. As per the video source, Verizon will launch this device around Thanksgiving, so we’ve got more or less a month to go before the Nokia Lumia 929 becomes official. Until then, make do with the leaked material, there’s bound to be more over the next few weeks.
