Nokia Press Event Happening this October 22nd

Nokia Press Event Happening this October 22ndIt was not too long ago that we brought you word about Nokia teasing the masses with an October 22nd press event that will be happening in Abu Dhabi, UAE. This particular press conference is all set to kick off at 8am UK time, which would be an hour before noon in Abu Dhabi. Not only that, there will be a live webcast which will be streamed, so that all of those who are interested can get a look at what is going on at the press event in real time. Not only that, those who are unable to make it to Abu Dhabi in the flesh will be on the receiving end of an additional treat in the form of a second round of webcasts, which is set to happen right after the main announcement is made.

What will the second round of webcasts be all about? They happen to be additional interactive sessions which will see additional detail and light shed on what devices were announced earlier on in the morning. The Lumia 1520 is to be expected, and do bear in mind that such press events tend to have been reserved for the press, bloggers, partners and analysts who attend Nokia World in the past, so it is nice to see how everyone else will now be able to participate in it. Nokia Asha 503 Leaked Out

Nokia Asha 503 Leaked OutWhen October 22nd rolls around, one can more or less expect that in most parts of the world, folks would be on the lookout for a spanking new iPad as well as an iPad mini, but that date has yet to be patented by the folks over at Apple, so it is also fair game for other hardware device manufacturers to roll out their latest gadget on that date as well. Nokia of Finland is one of such companies, where they are tipped to make an announcement concerning the Nokia Asha 503 on October 22nd itself.

What you see above happens to be a press render leak from the folks over at @evleaks, where the press image does point to a device with a particularly stand-out design. According to Nokia, this particular design approach has been deemed to be “dual-shot”, since there are a couple of layers which the device’s body is made out of. There is a translucent outer one, and also a colorful inner plastic layer. It seems that the Nokia Asha 503 is set to be a touch-only device similar to one with a capacitive touchscreen display, and it will also run Twitter. No idea on how much it will cost though, but it should not be too pricey to begin with.

@evleaks Prepares The Nokia Batman (Lumia 1320)

Serial leaksters @evleaks has done it again, where one of their tweets have delivered the Nokia Lumia 1320, where it would be alternatively known as the Nokia Batman. Yes sir, why name a smartphone after a superhero? Perhaps this is a no-frills handset that does what it is supposed to do without any issues at all. Apart from that speculation, there really is not much to go on about this particular handset, so you will just have to learn to make your own conclusions.

Of course, we have seen the Finnish smartphone company flirt with one of DC Comics’ best loved superheroes in the past, so it is not strange to see the same again this time around. There was a special edition of the Nokia Lumia 800 that was released to coincide with the Dark Knight Rises film, although a mere 40 units of these bad boys were developed. The Nokia Lumia 900 too, received the Batman treatment, and it was a handset that the likes of Bruce Wayne could afford, since a few of those units actually retailed up to $2,200 over on eBay. Will we see a Batman and Superman special edition next year when Batman vs. Superman hits the silver screen next year?

Additional Nokia Lumia 1520 Photos Leaked

Additional Nokia Lumia 1520 Photos LeakedWith Nokia’s event on the 22nd of October coming up, we guess it’s not surprising that leaks of the upcoming Nokia Lumia 1520 are starting to become more frequent than ever. The previous leak was the alleged press rendering of the device, but the latest leak is one of the handset in real life compared to another Windows Phone device. Thanks to this side-by-side comparison, we have a better idea of how monstrous Nokia’s latest handset truly is. (more…)

Prankster Replaces Nokia Signs In Finland With Microsoft

Prankster Replaces Nokia Signs In Finland With MicrosoftIt wasn’t too long ago that Microsoft announced their plans to acquire Nokia’s cellphone business, and with the acquisition there were talks about how Microsoft would drop the Nokia branding from future devices, as well as the Lumia name as well. This is not surprising given that Microsoft is hoping to streamline its brand and its products. For those unfamiliar, the name Nokia is not only the name of a company in Finland, but is also the name of a town in Finland in the region of Pirkanmaa where there are actual signboards that read “Nokia”.

Well with the upcoming acquisition, assuming nothing goes wrong, the Nokia brand could eventually disappear and one prankster in Finland has decided to “celebrate” that by replacing signboards that read “Nokia” with “Microsoft”, as you can see in the photo above.  We guess some people are taking the acquisition rather well, although we expect there are probably some diehard fans out there who are sad to see the brand go. We know we are, after all Nokia has put out some great feature phones in the past, like the 3310, which has managed to find its way into an internet meme as a handset that is durable enough to break down doors and destroy floors when dropped.

Nokia Lumia 1020′s Camera Wins In A Blind Camera Shoot-Out

Nokia Lumia 1020s Camera Wins In A Blind Camera Shoot OutWhen it comes to smartphones with great cameras, only a handful of devices come to mind and one of them is the Nokia Lumia 1020. Ultimately it does boil down to personal preference but it seems when it comes to a majority vote, the Lumia 1020 wins. This is according to the folks at Phone Arena who have conducted a blind comparison poll between some of the big name phones out there. This included the HTC One, the LG G2, the iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4, and the Nokia Lumia 1020. All photos were resized to 13MP with their EXIF data removed so users won’t be able to tell which phone took which photo.

The readers were then asked to choose which photo they thought looked best and according to the polls, the Nokia Lumia 1020 beat out the competition by a large margin, taking 62.19% of the votes! Samsung’s Galaxy S4 was in second place with 20.91% of the votes, followed by the iPhone 5s, the LG G2, the iPhone 5c, and finally the HTC One. It was an interesting test and if you’d like to see the rest of the test, hit up Phone Arena’s website for the details.

Nokia To Drop Symbian And MeeGo Support At End Of 2013

Nokia To Drop Symbian And MeeGo Support At End Of 2013Nokia, who has been rolling out Windows Phone 8 smartphones for quite a while already (after all, technology does move along at a rather fast pace), has announced that they will no longer offer support for both Symbian and MeeGo operating systems from the end of this year onward. This should not come across as a surprise, especially when you consider how Intel themselves have stopped development for the MeeGo operating system a year and a half after announcing the birth of this alternative mobile operating system with Nokia. That announcement meant that Nokia alone was soldiering on with MeeGo for the past two years, so to hear that Nokia will finally stop support for both operating systems at the end of 2013 could be seen as a progressive move.

This does not mean that there will be no more apps available for download, as customers can still do so, while developers will not be shortchanged since they will be on the receiving end of revenue for published applications. However, if you are a developer, it would mean that you can no longer publish or update apps on the Ovi Store once the clock strikes midnight on January 1. Would you miss the demise of MeeGo and Symbian?

Latest Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet Leak Shows Off Kickstand

Latest Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet Leak Shows Off Kickstand

There have been a lot of rumors recently about an upcoming Nokia tablet. Presumably called the Lumia 2520, Nokia is expected to formally announce this tablet on October 22nd at its event in Abu Dhabi, the company has already confirmed the event. We have seen a number of leaks as well, including but not limited to purported pictures and specifications. Yet another such picture of the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet has leaked. The picture is cut off and shows a small part of the presumed tablet’s back, on which we can make out a kickstand the likes of which you’ll find on a Microsoft Surface tablet.

It is easy to doubt the authenticity of this picture, given the fact that it shows off just a small section of the tablet. No Nokia branding is visible as well, meaning that this could be anything if not the much rumored and highly anticipated Nokia tablet. Nevertheless, the kickstand at the back is similar to that on the Surface, but not as large. A headphone jack and SIM slot are also visible. Nokia Lumia 2520 is expected to have a Qualcomm quadcore 8974 processor and a 10.1 inch 1,920x,1080 IPS display. The tablet is said to run Windows RT 8.1. No pricing or availability information has been made available at this point in time. [Image via CTechCN]

Nokia Achieves 11.5% Enterprise Market Share In The UK

Nokia Achieves 11.5% Enterprise Market Share In The UKEarlier this year, Nokia’s then-CEO, Stephen Elop, announced his plans for the Finnish company to hit a 10% market share in the US, and while the company has yet to achieve that, they have managed to accomplish that goal at least in the UK by claiming a 11.5% market share in the enterprise market, with a goal to hit a whopping 20% market share by the end of 2013. According to Nokia’s director of business sales for UK and Europe, Adrian Williams, “Our market share with Windows Phone has grown from 0% to 11.5% in the last 18 months. Our ambition is to reach 20% by the end of 2013 as our momentum increases, which would position Nokia as number two in market share.”

This is a pretty ambitious goal of Nokia’s, especially since the handset manufacturer has not exactly been viewed as a maker of enterprise devices or services, unlike their rival BlackBerry. However recent reports have suggested that many companies are starting to abandon BlackBerry’s products and services in light of its difficulties in favor of the Windows Phone platform, so perhaps Nokia will be able to hit those numbers. This is not the first time we’ve heard Nokia doing well in the UK. A report back in September indicated that it was thanks to the low-end Nokia Lumia 520 that allowed Nokia to achieve a higher market share in the country.
