Microsoft-Nokia Deal Could Run Into Trouble In India

Microsoft Nokia Deal Could Run Into Trouble In IndiaEarlier in September, Microsoft announced their plans to purchase Nokia’s smartphone division for a whopping $7.17 billion. This was hardly a done deal as regulatory bodies are expected to conduct their due diligence on either company and the deal to ensure that it meets certain guidelines, and that through this deal it will not allow Microsoft to become a monopoly of sorts. In any case so far it seems that the deal has not been thrown any curve balls or run into any obstacles, at least until recently when the Delhi High Court in India decided to announce an interim stay on the Microsoft-Nokia deal, at least until Nokia pays their fine for alleged tax violation.

The Indian Income Tax Department slapped Nokia with a fine of Rs. 2,000 crore back in March for alleged tax violations, a move which Nokia has since been fighting against. However the Delhi High Court has decided that until this matter has been resolved, the Microsoft and Nokia deal should be placed on hold, at least to prevent Nokia from disposing any of their properties or assets in the country once the deal goes through. According to Nokia India’s lawyers, “so far no agreement has been executed for transfer of the India business and no value has been ascribed for this either.”

AT&T’s Lumia 920 Amber Update Will Arrive In The Coming Weeks

AT&Ts Lumia 920 Amber Update Will Arrive In The Coming Weeks

Developers are working on games… but the current selection is very limited

While Windows Phone users around the world have slowly been getting the Windows Phone GDR2 update, those in the US, especially those tied to carriers, have yet to receive theirs, and AT&T’s Nokia Lumia 920 owners are one of them. Well the good news is that if you’ve been anticipating the update for your phone, according to AT&T, the update should be making its way onto your devices in the coming weeks. This was “confirmed” by an AT&T rep who posted on the carrier’s forum, stating that the update is currently in the final stages of testing, so presumably we won’t have to wait much longer to get our hands on it.

The time frame is admittedly a little vague but we guess it will have to do for now, but hopefully AT&T will not take too long because word has it that the Windows Phone GDR3 is also in the works and could be announced in the near future as well, and we’re pretty sure Lumia 920 owners on AT&T’s network aren’t going to be too happy about it if GDR3 is announced while GDR2 has yet to arrive on their devices. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled so check back with us at a later date for more updates.

Two Versions Of The Nokia Lumia 1520 Spotted At The FCC

Two Versions Of The Nokia Lumia 1520 Spotted At The FCCCome October, Nokia is expected to take the wraps off a brand new smartphone called the Lumia 1520. For those who haven’t been following the news, the Lumia 1520 is a phablet by Nokia that will sport a large display along with a Full HD resolution, making it the first Nokia handset to do that, and possibly the first Windows Phone device to support Full HD as well. In any case thanks to FCC sightings, two possible versions of the Lumia 1520 have been spotted in the form of the RM-937 and the RM-938.

The full documentation for either device has not been made available yet so it is unclear as to what the major differences between both handsets are. However it is possible that one version is destined for US carriers, while the other might be an international variant which still needs to go through the FCC if people have plans to bring it into the US and sell it. In any case hopefully more information about the Lumia 1520 will be revealed at Nokia’s event on the 22nd of October, so be sure to check back with us then for the details!

Windows Phone jumps in Europe but US still loves Android and iOS

Windows Phone has hit double-digits in two European markets and averages 9.2-percent in Europe as a whole, new figures suggest, though Microsoft’s smartphone platform still lags well behind iOS and Android, particularly in the US. Sales of Windows Phone devices – the majority of which are from Nokia’s Lumia range – in the UK and […]

Nokia “Glee” Might Actually Be The Lumia 525

Nokia Glee Might Actually Be The Lumia 525

A few days ago we reported that Nokia is expected to launch a new low end Lumia smartphone which will be music centric. The smartphone reportedly carries the “Glee” codename. Recent reports suggest that this device might actually be the successor to Nokia’s insanely popular Lumia 520. This particular device, Lumia 520, is actually said to be the single best selling Windows device out there and Nokia might be willing to build to its success with the Lumia 525 a.k.a the Glee.

Details about the Lumia 525, which itself is an alleged moniker, are scarce at this point in time. It is not known exactly what internal hardware this smartphone will tout. This device will no doubt be important for Nokia and Windows Phone in general, since it would essentially seek to achieve the same level of success that the Lumia 520 has. The primary reason why Lumia 520 is popular is due to its competitive price, and the fact that it does so much more than other phones available in or around the same price bracket. Nokia has an event scheduled on October 22nd in Abu Dhabi, UAE. There, it is expected to unveil six new devices, including a new tablet. The Lumia 525 a.k.a Glee is also expected to be announced there.

    Nokia Storyteller App Screenshot Leaked

    Nokia Storyteller App Screenshot Leaked

Nokia is scheduled to conduct a major media event on October 22nd in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The company has already confirmed the event but hasn’t said what we can expect. As per rumors, it might release as many as six devices. A number of those devices have already been leaked or rumored, that includes but is not limited to the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet, Lumia 1520 phablet, Asha 502 and a “Glee” smartphone which is a low end Lumia focused on music. Today, a screenshot of the Nokia Storyteller app has been leaked by the infamous @evleaks, who has been behind a number of Nokia related leaks in the past as well.

The screenshot as well as the app’s alleged name hints at the fact that the app might allow users to organize their photos based on various themes, thus essentially creating a photo-story. The Shared tab hints at the possibility of being able to share photo-stories. The Timeline tab would probably display photos based on the date they were taken and Map would display the places the photos were taken at. The tweet also mentions Bandit and Sirius, which are codenames for Nokia’s much rumored phablet and tablet, respectively. Their mention in the tweet could indicate that this app might work on both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 RT which the Sirius tablet is expected to run.

Nokia says current high-end Lumias won’t get Bluetooth 4.0 support (update: they may)

    Nokia Lumia 920 1020 and 925

We hope you don’t want to use a heart rate monitor while running with your Lumia 1020 — you’ll likely be out of luck. Nokia Australia claims that Bluetooth 4.0 support won’t be coming to existing high-end Lumias like the 820, 925 and 1020. There are “hardware limitations” that prevent an upgrade, the company explains. We’ve reached out to Nokia for clarification, but the company may have hinted at those limits when launching the Adidas miCoach app — it mentioned that only the Lumia 520, 620 and 720 would work with Adidas’ heart monitors. The restrictions will no doubt frustrate some owners, although we suspect that Nokia may improve its Bluetooth support with the next wave of Lumia hardware.

Update: Nokia Germany spokesman Ben Lampe says that Bluetooth 4.0 support will come to all Windows Phone 8-based Lumias through a post-Amber update. Clearly, there are conflicting responses; we’re hoping to get a definitive answer soon.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Pokes Fun At Samsung

Nokia Lumia 1020 Ad Pokes Fun At SamsungBoth Nokia and Microsoft have been taking digs at the competition in the past few months, with the most recent one from Nokia where the Finnish company made fun of the recent Apple Maps mishap. However thanks to a recent billboard sighting from Nokia over on Lombard Street, California, it looks like Nokia could be taking another jab at Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom, especially since the ad for the Nokia Lumia 1020 reads, “The most megapixels you can fit into a pair of skinny jeans.”

For those who are unfamiliar with the Galaxy S4 Zoom, this is a smartphone by Samsung that shares some of the hardware specs of the Galaxy S4, with the main difference being that the phone will pack a 16MP camera on the back. However the design of the phone felt more like a camera rather than a smartphone, making it an extremely bulky device, at least when compared to the more svelte Lumia 1020. While the Lumia 1020 does pack more megapixels when compared to the Galaxy S4 Zoom, it should be noted that more megapixels aren’t necessarily a good thing, nor does it determine a camera’s quality, but it’s still a pretty funny ad nonetheless.

Storyteller app for Windows Phone and Windows 8 appears in leaked screenshots

Storyteller app for Windows Phone and Windows 8 appears in leaked screenshots

@evleaks is at it again. This time the prolific leaker has blasted out two screen grabs of an app called Storyteller, which made a Live Tile-cameo in the alleged screencap of a Nokia Bandit, an oversized Windows Phone 8 device. The app appears to be a Windows 8 and WP photo album that lets users sift through images by timeline, favorites and shared, or browse them on a map. A close look at the top right of the application meant for larger devices reveals a “My tablet” menu, suggesting it boasts integration with slates. Given that @evleaks mentions Bandit, Espoo’s long-rumored Sirius pad and October 22nd event date, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see new hardware — and at least one new app — this fall.

Nokia ‘Sirius’ Tablet Apparently Gets Approved By The FCC

Nokia Sirius Tablet Apparently Gets Approved By The FCC

Nokia has long been rumored to be working on a Windows powered tablet of its own. Despite the fact it has agreed to sell its core phone business to Microsoft, the company seems adamant to pump out a few devices before the deal is finally closed. One of those devices is believed to be Nokia’s tablet, codenamed “Sirius.” Apparently the mystery RX-114 Nokia device that the FCC just approved is the much rumored tablet. The folks at Engadget have gone through the 167 page filing and found certain details which are said to confirm that the device is in fact a Nokia branded tablet.

It has been rumored that perhaps this tablet will be called Lumia 2520. It is expected to tout a 10.1 inch full HD 1080p display, a 6.7 megapixel rear camera as well as a quadcore processor by Qualcomm. Alleged renders and full specification list has already been leaked. Not much is known about availability or pricing just yet. Though it is believed that perhaps Nokia might make the announcement at Nokia World 2013, which has been scheduled for October 22nd in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The Finnish manufacturer hasn’t said anything as yet about its tablet, hopefully it will break its silence at the aforementioned event.
