Nokia will reveal six new products, including smartphones, entry-level devices, and its first Windows tablet at an October 22 event, insiders claim, a broad refresh of its line as it tries to claw back attention to devices rather than the Microsoft acquisition. The Abu Dhabi launch will consist of “several” Lumia Windows Phones, sources tell […]
Nokia Treasure Tag Accessory Leaked
Posted in: Today's ChiliBack in July, it was revealed that Nokia had a new accessory that they would be debuting in the near future called the “Treasure Tag”. At that time all we had was a diagram of the device, but thanks to the ever-reliable @evleaks, a photo of the accessory has since been leaked. For those unfamiliar with the accessory, the Treasure Tag is essentially a Bluetooth/NFC tag that can be used to pair with a smartphone, such as a Nokia Lumia device for example. It will make use of Bluetooth 4.0 which will be supported in the Windows Phone GDR2 update and basically it acts as a homing beacon for object.
For example you could use the strap and attach the Treasure Tag to a bag, another smartphone, your wallet, your keys, and etc. and because it is paired with your smartphone, along with the accompanying app you will be able to locate your device in the event that it goes missing. It will be able to take advantage of Nokia’s LiveSight augmented reality view and will also be able to sound off an alert on the phone when it is within range. The Treasure Tag is expected to make its debut come this October.

Rumor has it that Nokia is in the process of rebuilding the camera app for its smartphones that are powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. The company currently offers two separate apps called Nokia Smart Cam and Pro Cam. It is said that both of them are going to be discontinued in favor of one single app called “Nokia Camera,” which will contain all of the features that both of these apps offer. The app is likely to have a new user interface to choose Pro or Smart features.
Furthermore, it is said that not all Windows Phone powered Nokia Lumia smartphones will be able to access the Pro functions in the Nokia Camera app. Only a select few devices will have this privilege. The list of devices includes Nokia Lumia 920, 925, 928, 1020 and the unreleased 1520. Nokia is reportedly testing the app internally at this point in time. It is believed that the app will be bundled with Lumia 1520, Nokia’s first Windows Phone phablet, which is expected to be unveiled at the Nokia World event scheduled on October 22nd. Recent rumors suggest that apart from unveiling its first phablet, Nokia might unveil as many as five different devices at the event, which takes place in Abu Dhabi.

A little over a week ago we reported that outgoing Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is likely to rake in a $25 million payday if shareholders are to approve the sale of Nokia’s phone business to Microsoft. Under the deal, not only will Elop move back to Microsoft, he will also see this incredible surge in his net worth due to accelerated vesting of his outstanding equity awards, a short term cash management bonus and 18 months of his base salary. There’s been some outrage over in Finland over this figure, and apparently Nokia requested Elop to accept a reduced payday. According to the Helsingin Sanomat, Elop has refused to do so.
The Canadian born Elop took the helm at Nokia nearly three years ago. Under his reign, the company adopted Windows Phone as the core platform for its smartphones. It also saw its share price drop by more than a third, while it continued to hemorrhage market share. As per the report, Elop reasons that he can’t accept a reduced payday because of his upcoming divorce. He says that if he accepts less than the $25 million he’s entitled to from Nokia, he won’t be able to convince his wife to make do with a smaller settlement.

Will there be a new slew of Nokias coming our way in due time? Well, apparently there are half a dozen new devices which are set to be launched at a Nokia event at Abu Dhabi sometime next month, at least according to what The Verge reported. Out of the half dozen, there will be a couple of new Lumia devices which will run on the Windows Phone operating system, while another four devices might just see an Asha device make an appearance. Other sources that are familiar with Nokia’s plans also do point to new accessories.
I am quite sure that many people will be looking forward to a 6” Nokia Lumia 1520 as that particular device has been rumored for quite some time already. Whispers have it that the Nokia Lumia 1520 will arrive with a Full HD display, not to mention Windows Phone 8 GDR3 as the operating system of choice. Who knows, there might also be the announcement of a new tablet, perhaps the Sirius? All in all, the action going on at Nokia seem to be rather interesting, which is a good thing since such healthy competition is good for the industry. Are you looking forward to what Nokia has in store next month?

Stephen Elop’s contract revealed as having bonus contingent on Nokia downspiral
Posted in: Today's ChiliAs we noted last week, Stephen Elop is set to receive a $25 million payment as a result of the Nokia sales deal with Microsoft, something pending regulatory approval. Landing a job in the market today is harder than ever but it seems that Nokia is looking to do their part for the community by launching an app called the Internship Lens. The app is built off the company’s earlier efforts called JobLens and basically what it does is that it will help recent college graduates look for a job, or an internship, in the immediate area as well as based on what they have been trained in, meaning that you will not be placed at jobs that are irrelevant to your field or study, hopefully.
This is a joint effort by Nokia and Internships.com, which for those unfamiliar, is the world’s largest database on job opportunities. The app will be made available for download today, although it seems to be limited to just Nokia Lumia Windows Phone owners based in the US, so those living outside of the US will have to find a job without any help from Nokia! When an internship is found, users have the option to choose to Save it for later, Share it with someone who they think might be better suited, or Apply for the internship position themselves. Sounds like a pretty good idea and kudos to Nokia for their efforts.
Nokia Internship Lens App Announced, Will Help College Grads Look For Work original content from Ubergizmo.
Finding a college internship that isn’t soul-draining can be tough, but Nokia wants to help with that. Today, the Finnish company is announcing a joint effort with Internships.com to release Internships Lens, an app that leverages augmented reality and your social circles to point you toward the nearest gig that hopefully pays more than just school credit. It’s similar to JobLens in that it displays employment info over the top of wherever your Lumia’s camera is looking — again using LiveSight tech — and is exclusive to Nokia’s line of Windows Phone 8 handsets. What’s more, you can research an employer from within the app, which could calm those pre-interview jitters. If you still need a ‘ship for the upcoming winter semester, maybe this could help.

With Microsoft about to acquire Nokia, we’re sure there are some customers who might not be too happy about it. After all there have been talks about how the Nokia brand (at least as far as cellphones are concerned) would be removed and everything would be Microsoft-branded. Given Nokia’s long history in the mobile phone industry, undoubtedly many would be sad to see the brand go. However it looks like the impact of the acquisition is not as big as some would have thought, and when several huge retailers in India were interviewed about potential backlash from customers, it seems that there wasn’t much.
According to The Times of India who spoke to retailers such as The Mobile Store and UniverCell Telecom, both of whom account for more than half of total smartphone sales, it seems that the sales of Nokia devices continued as per normal and did not see much dip, which they attributed to customers being unbothered by the acquisition. Of course we expect there are those who are saddened by this news, but in the grand scheme of things it looks like it’s business as usual. What do you guys say? Has Microsoft’s decision affected your future purchases?
