Qualcomm Might Have Accidently Confirmed Snapdragon 800 For Lumia 1520

Qualcomm Might Have Accidently Confirmed Snapdragon 800 For Lumia 1520

Nokia is expected to unveil its first Windows Phone 8 powered phablet in the coming weeks. There have been a lot of rumors about this device, we’ve seen a lot of leaked pictures as well. The company itself hasn’t said anything about the device just yet, though it has scheduled an event on October 22nd and right now it is believed that Lumia 1520′s announcement might be made at that event. Nothing is known for sure about the specifications, but it appears that Qualcomm may have accidently confirmed the presence of its quadcore Snapdragon 800 processor in the Lumia 1520.

A tweet from the company’s official Snapdragon Twitter account reads that it is “proud to be a part of that awesome device.” This tweet has since been deleted, the account has followed up with a clarification, claiming that the original tweet was misread and that there’s no information about future devices. As per recent rumors, Nokia Lumia 1520 is expected to tout the Snapdragon 800, so this doesn’t really come as a surprise. It is not known as yet when the Lumia 1520 will be released in the market, AT&T was believed to have exclusivity in the U.S. but it seems that perhaps Verizon may carry the Nokia phablet as well. Dual SIM Nokia Asha 500 Appears In Press Render

Dual SIM Nokia Asha 500 Appears In Press RenderMany smartphones these days still come with just one SIM slot, but we have been seeing our fair share of dual SIM smartphones being introduced to the market in recent times. Of course, one particular niche where the dual SIM handset would do very well would be the featurephone range, and Nokia is still king of the ring here. Of course, we ought to bear in mind that Microsoft now owns Nokia, and while there has been whispers going around that Microsoft has more or less “forced”, or rather, convinced Nokia to cancel some Asha devices, a new Asha 500 has popped up in the form of a press render thanks to the folks over at @evleaks.

The Nokia Asha 500 does not seem all that much different from the Asha 501, where the latter has already been available in select markets since June. The Nokia Asha 500, however, will not come with a hardware homey key like the Asha 501, albeit it will feature a capacitive one. Other than the dual SIM capability, we figure out that the Nokia Asha 500 would most probably arrive with a 3” display, Wi-Fi connectivity and a highly affordable price point.

Microsoft sees future for ARM-based tablets, but maybe not Windows RT

Windows 81 indepth handson features, apps, impressions and screenshots

The rest of the industry may have turned its back on Windows RT, but it looks as if Microsoft isn’t prepared to ditch the Windows-on-ARM dream just yet. During an analyst call, Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s recently crowned software chief, seemed to describe RT as a first attempt, which will be followed up by further devices in the future:

“Windows RT was our first ARM tablet(sic). And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future.”

Myerson’s choice of words, and in particular his reference to phones that “extend into tablets,” suggests that Microsoft could be looking to bridge the divide between its smartphone and tablet divisions, and perhaps give Windows Phone a much more prominent role than the much-maligned Windows RT. Indeed, using Windows Phone as a tablet OS, or merging WP and RT, would help Microsoft to unify its various platforms and apps — something it has talked about in the past and that is actually a key focus of Myserson’s work:

“… we really should have one silicon interface for all of our devices. We should have one set of developer APIs on all of our devices. And all of the apps we bring to end users should be available on all of our devices.”

So, who knows, perhaps Windows Phone and RT have a common future? In which case, the idea of Nokia taking charge of this unified drive — building phones and tablets on the same platform — would make a lot of sense.

Nokia to pay Stephen Elop millions to move to Microsoft

Stephen Elop will get a $25m cut of the Microsoft-Nokia deal after the Windows Phone company buys the Finnish smartphone business, new regulatory filings have confirmed today. The payout to the outgoing CEO, which is detailed in an SEC 6-K submitted by Nokia today, calculates that Elop can expect roughly €18.8m ($25.4m), with Nokia on […]

Stephen Elop In For $25M Payday If Shareholders Approve Sale

It was announced a couple of weeks ago that Microsoft is going to acquire Nokia’s core phone business for more than $7 billion. The Finnish manufacturers shareholders have yet to approve the deal, and if they do, the former Nokia boss Stephen Elop will net a $25 million payday, as per current projections. As part of the deal between both companies, Elop will move back to Microsoft. Redmond will pay 70 percent of the projected total amount of $25 million while the remainder will be doled out by Nokia. This figure is made up primarily of accelerated vesting of his outstanding equity awards, 18 months of base salary and a short term management cash bonus.

Nokia, which was once a titan in the industry, has seen its market share decrease rapidly over the last few years. Elop was appointed to the top slot almost three years ago, during his tenure the company’s stock price has dropped by more than a third. Under the deal, Microsoft will get Nokia’s core phone business and nearly 32,000 employees. The fate of this deal hangs in the balance as shareholders have yet to decide if they want Redmond to take away the business that accounted for half of Nokia’s revenues last year. The meet on November 19th to put the matter to a vote.

Nokia’s Android Experiment Is Reportedly Still Ongoing

Nokias Android Experiment Is Reportedly Still OngoingThe other day according to a report, Nokia had allegedly been testing an Android device prior to Microsoft announcing their acquisition plans. It had been thought at that time that Nokia had since stopped experimenting with Android, but according to a new report, it seems that the experimentation was still going on. In fact it seems that the device had made it to prototype stages and Foxconn had even manufactured about 10,000 units of said device, although we don’t think this was to sell but perhaps to distribute internally for testing.

The Android device, according to the report, is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 200 8225Q chip and was built and tested by Nokia’s Beijing R&D team. It seems that the experimenting with Android is expected to continue and the project will only be cancelled once the Microsoft and Nokia deal is finalized later on this year. We doubt Microsoft wants to roll out any Android devices anytime soon, but we guess exploring the possibilities even if it’s just a prototype can’t hurt, right? Not to mention it is also possible that Microsoft wanted to acquire Nokia to prevent such a thing from happening because losing their number 1 Windows Phone partner is definitely not good for the platform, although we have to admit that we are curious as to what a Nokia Android device might look like.

Microsoft Store Offers Free Wireless Charging Cover For Lumia 925

Microsoft Store Offers Free Wireless Charging Cover For Lumia 925If you’re planning on picking up the Nokia Lumia 925, you might to think about hitting up the Microsoft Store instead of your carrier. The reason is because as you can see from the screenshot above, the Microsoft Store will offering the handset on contract via AT&T or T-Mobile, but at the same time will throw in a free wireless charging case for those of you who enjoy the wireless charging capability of your phone. The case is valued at $39 and the phone itself is priced starting at $99 along with a two-year contract from either carrier.

The Nokia Lumia 925 was released not too long ago and is the first Nokia Lumia device to actually sport the use of aluminum in its body. For the most part Nokia’s Lumia lineup had been made of polycarbonate, so the Lumia 925 does feel slightly more premium thanks to the use of metal. Its specs include a 4.5” 1280×768 display with a Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an 8.7MP PureView camera with a 2,000mAh battery.

Microsoft Allegedly Pushing Nokia To Cancel Its ‘Sirius’ Tablet

Microsoft Allegedly Pushing Nokia To Cancel Its Sirius Tablet

Microsoft has already announced that it is acquiring Nokia’s core phone business for more than $7 billion. The deal hasn’t actually been closed as yet, its expected to take more than a couple of months. Eldar Murtazin, who predicted over two years ago that Nokia will sell its core business to Microsoft, claimed in a series of tweets that Redmond is apparently pushing Nokia to cancel a few of its upcoming products, one of which is the Windows RT tablet codenamed “Sirius.”

Murtazin says that Microsoft telling Nokia what to do at this point in time is like it acting like it “already own the company.” It should be noted though that there’s absolutely no confirmation that Nokia is indeed being pressurized to stop its tablet from ever coming out even though the business isn’t technically under Microsoft right now, this is a rumor from one source and should be treated that way. Murtazin also claims that Microsoft wants half of the budget Asha touchscreen phones to be stopped as well. There has been no official comment from either Microsoft or Nokia on these rumors. Nokia’s “Sirius” tablet has been making the rounds online quite a bit, the company is expected to launch it in the coming months.
