Nokia Reportedly Unveiling Multiple Devices Next Month

Nokia Reportedly Unveiling Multiple Devices Next Month

We’ve recently been hearing rumors that Nokia is working on a phablet and a tablet. The Finnish manufacturer is yet to confirm anything, but according to a report by Reuters, Nokia is going to unveil new devices with “large screens” next month. Citing sources familiar with the manufacturer’s plans, the report claims Nokia will be unveiling these new devices to revamp the Lumia lineup as well as challenge Samsung’s dominance in the phablet market. Samsung is expected to unveil its brand new phablet, the Galaxy Note 3, in September as well.

The sources mentioned in the report don’t reveal any information about specifications or pricing, but do say that the new devices will include a phablet. Only recently it was rumored that Nokia has a phablet up its sleeve, codenamed Bandit. The phablet reportedly has a 6 inch 1080p display, a quadcore Qualcomm processor and a 20 megapixel rear camera. It is said to have a slight hump at the back to accomodate like the Lumia 925 the camera sensor. Rumor has it that the phablet is currently being tested by AT&T and will be released in the U.S. later this year. Reuters’ report doesn’t explicitly mention the Bandit, so its best to take unofficial information regarding Nokia’s supposed phablet with a grain of salt.

Nokia Here research brings map data to life

Nokia Here collection vehicles aren’t the only way the Finish giant is gathering data about our highways and city streets. The company’s researchers are also using anonymous smartphone, PND and even CAN bus data to further our understanding of traffic flow and driver behavior in different conditions. Beyond improving maps and navigation, the goal is to make our roads better and cars smarter. We recently spoke with Nokia’s Jane Macfarlane, Head of Research for Here, who shared how her team is bringing map data to life with the collaboration of opt-in smartphone users and fleet vehicle operators. Nokia Here collection vehicle v2.0 ride-along

What do the Lumia 920, Surface Pro, Velodyne LIDAR, NovAtel GPS and Jetta TDI wagon all have in common? They’re all essential parts of the next generation Nokia Here collection vehicle. When Here was announced last fall, we checked out v1.0 of the car which featured an elaborate but clunky set of sensors and cameras. That’s also when Nokia announced it was acquiring Earthmine, a Berkeley-based 3D-mapping company. Nine months later, we’re seeing the results of this collaboration with v2.0 of the collection vehicle. It’s a simpler and more advanced setup which provides much improved image quality. Nokia recently invited us to take ride in a next generation Here car — check out the gallery below then hit the break for our video and breakdown of the technology. %Gallery-slideshow73223%

Windows Phone Is Number 2 Mobile OS In Latin America, Says IDC

Windows Phone Is Number 2 Mobile OS In Latin America, Says IDCMicrosoft’s Windows Phone mobile operating system might not have made quite the splash in the US market as much as Microsoft would have liked it to, as it remains far behind Android and iOS as the OS of choice among mobile devices. Well, things are looking rather rosy in different parts of the world, and just down south of the US, the entire are that we know of as Latin America boasts Windows Phone as the second most widely used mobile OS, at least according to the folks at IDC. in all of Latin America.

According to Microsoft’s press release, the second quarter of 2013 saw an overall 12% percent growth in Latin America when it comes to Windows Phone. It is also first runner up in Mexico, Peru, and Colombia. The percentage of Colombian Windows Phone owners happens to be 25.6% among smartphone users there, while other Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile and Brazil, see Windows Phone sitting comfortably in third place. All of those rather impressive positions could be attributed to the affordable Nokia Lumia 520 as well as the higher end Lumia 920. Do you think that Windows Phone would see a similar explosive growth rate in other developing countries, or do you think it is a Latin America thing only? [Press Release]

    Seven Nokia Product Codenames Leaked

Seven Nokia Product Codenames LeakedIt was not too long ago when we did hear whispers that the future tablet from Nokia has been given the codename “Bandit”, where additional details concerning it point to the Bandit being a Windows RT tablet. Well, a brand new leak has just appeared that points to not one, two, or three – but seven different product codenames, which could translate to some rather extensive plans to roll out additional Windows-powered devices, or there is also the possibility of having too many names throw people off the right trail.

@evleaks were the ones behind this particular leak (somehow, we are not surprised by this), and apart from “Bandit”, the other six names would be “Lanai, Orion, Pegasus, Rivendell, Shorty, Siruis”. “Rivendell” is not some place where you will find fair-skinned and tall elves, but rather, it could be a reference to another product that was spotted in the past with the codename “Rivendale”. Considering the rather similar sounding names, it could very well be the same device. Of course, it would have been a whole lot nicer if there were actually photos to go along with the codename leaks, but I am quite sure that this would not be too far off from the horizon.
