If you’re brave enough to head into the little-traveled universe of hacking on Windows Phone devices, you’re in luck this week – Amber ROMs have leaked for both the Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 920. These updates include all of the high-powered goodies spoken about earlier this year when the Nokia Lumia 925 was released. […]
The Nokia Lumia 625 which was announced just last month holds one form factor design that trumps the other members of the Lumia family from the Finnish smartphone manufacturer – it is said to be the largest Windows Phone 8 device to hit the market to date, and some would categorize it under the phablet department. Well, it was just a few days back when Nokia Lebanon teased the Nokia Lumia 625 on its Twitter account. Nokia Lebanon claimed that the Nokia Lumia 625 would soon come in a new variant – one that has a dual-SIM carriage, which would mean emerging markets as well as those who need the flexibility of two numbers without wanting to tote around more than a single handset for convenience reasons might want to check out this potential dual-SIM Nokia Lumia 625.
Of course, we have since moved on to triple-SIM smartphones that are already in the works, where a couple of these would be one from LG as well as the GooPhone X1+, but to carry three SIM cards around at once, it could be potentially crippling to your bank account with three plans to worry about each month. Of course, one would need to take this bit of news with a large pinch of salt, since the Nokia Lebanon Twitter account is not an official channel.

Should you happen to own either a Nokia Lumia 820 or the higher end model of that corresponding smartphone generation, the Nokia Lumia 920, then you might be pleased to hear that the Amber update is out a little bit earlier than expected. Sure, this particular update is not the official one, but for those with the intestinal fortitude to give unofficial ROMs a go, you might want to check out the links provided by WindowsMania.pl.
These unofficial Amber ROMs for the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 920 will upgrade international versions of the respective Windows Phone 8-powered devices to the Amber release, which is ahead of Microsoft’s own rollout timetable. These two ROMs are said to be relatively easy to install from a PC as long as you use NokiaViews.com’s instructions, although as with any unofficial ROM update, there is a certain element of risk attached to it – it requires you to give your phone a clean slate by wiping away all of its data, with no guarantee of future official upgrades. Would you prefer to play the patience card instead?
Unofficial Nokia Lumia 820 And 920 Amber ROMs Available original content from Ubergizmo.
If you’re a Nokia Lumia 820 or 920 owner, you now have a chance to try the Amber update a little early. WindowsMania.pl has posted unofficial ROMs (820, 920) that upgrade international versions of the Windows Phones to the Amber release ahead of Microsoft’s rollout. Both ROMs are relatively easy to install from a PC using NokiaViews.com‘s instructions, although they’re risky: they require wiping the phone’s data, and there’s no guarantees of future official upgrades. Even so, the new code may be worthwhile for Lumia fans who’d rather not wait a few weeks for a minor OS refresh.

Switched On: The camera phone
Posted in: Today's ChiliEach week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.
In that human-behavior lab known as the New York City subway, a vacationing family recently sought to get in a group self-portrait on their last day in the Big Apple. But the rocking train kept thwarting the capture of their jostled bodies. To frame the picture, they tried trading the quality of their smartphone’s rear camera for the one above the phone’s display so they could better preview the picture, but still had trouble composing the shot. Finally, a local passenger riding with them stepped in and offered to take their photo, which he did to their expressions of gratitude.
The incident served as an illustration of the often precarious situations in which we use our smartphone cameras. Had their phone been Nokia’s Lumia 1020 and the stranger not intervened, the 41 megapixels of light-capturing prowess might have gone for naught as the family would’ve had to rely on the phone’s middling front-facing camera.

If you bought a Nokia Lumia device in the past 6 months and were wondering if there were an easier way to transfer photos to your OS X machine than the already in-play Windows Phone app, lucky you: today there is. What you’re looking at here is Nokia Photo Transfer for Mac, an extremely simple […]
Nokia intros Photo Transfer for Mac to back up shots from special image modes
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s easy for Mac users to back up regular photos from Lumia phones, but not the shots taken using Nokia’s special modes — iPhoto can’t handle the raw data from Cinemagraph, for example. Nokia’s new Photo Transfer for Mac should provide that missing peace of mind. The utility saves all the files needed to work with photos and videos in Nokia’s mobile imaging apps, including Cinemagraph, Pro Camera, Smart Camera and SmartShoot. While there’s no on-computer editing, the tool simplifies exporting any media to a Lumia device for additional tweaks. If you’re running at least OS X Lion, you can grab Photo Transfer for Mac at the source link.

A couple of months ago we reported that the Nokia Lumia 520 was apparently selling out in India, and given the phone’s affordable price tag, it wasn’t hard to see why it became a pretty popular device as far as Windows Phone devices were concerned. Well it looks like apart from selling like hotcakes in India and helping Nokia achieve a higher market share in the UK, a report from Teknikka & Talous, a publication based in Finland, it looks like the Lumia 520 has gone and become the top seller amongst carriers in Nokia’s home of Finland.
According to the report, the Lumia 520 was only launched in Finland last month but it seems that the device had no trouble becoming the top seller across three of Finland’s mobile operators. Given that Samsung is dominating in Finland, this is a victory that Nokia could definitely use. While Windows Phone might not be the number one platform in the world, it over in Finland the platform appears to be doing quite well and last we heard, it managed to nab about 20% of the market share and we have to wonder if the Lumia 520 will be helping those numbers increase.

Nokia 808 PureView Snaps Photo That Picks Up 2nd Place In International Photo Contest
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe Nokia 808 PureView which was announced early last year certainly captured the imagination of the masses with its 41-megapixel sensor, considering how smartphones at that point in time did not feature such a high megapixel count. Still, all those megapixels does not automatically mean your images would look great, since there is more to snapping a photo than by bumping up the number of megapixels the sensor can capture. Still, this has not stopped a certain Kartanofoto who captured the Aino Fountain (by Emil Wikström of Finland) with the Nokia 808 PureView which had picked up the first runner up spot in the “Wiki Loves Public Art 2013″ competition.
Over 9,250 images were uploaded by 225 uploaders, and out of that figure, 57% of them were first time contributors. The jury was truly an international one, where they hailed from Sweden, India, Lithuania and Germany. Comments from the jury concerning this entry was “Vivid and vibrant photo, nice dominance of green color (background, reflections in the water, statues).” Still, you will not see professional photographers on an assignment like at a wedding use a smartphone with a great digital camera sensor within as their primary working tool of choice. What do you think of the winning photo above?
