Nokia Reportedly Has An Event Scheduled In September, Tablet Or Phablet?

Nokia Reportedly Has An Event Scheduled In September, Tablet Or Phablet?

Last month Nokia launched its much rumored Lumia 1020 smartphone amid much fanfare. There was a lot of anticipation surrounding the event, but now that it has gone by, we must wonder what Nokia has in store for us in the future. The folks over at Windows Phone Central claim that Nokia has an event scheduled for September 26-27 in New York. It is not yet known exactly what Nokia would be announcing at that event, in fact it is too soon to say that this might be a product unveil event. For all we know, it could be a tea party for Nokia employees.

Nevertheless, the alleged event has got the rumor mill churning. Only recently a Nokia RX-114 tablet was spotted, so many believe that Nokia might be unveiling its first ever Windows powered tablet in New York this September. Last week we saw a purported display panel of the much rumored Nokia phablet, so naturally there’s speculation supporting the theory that Nokia is gearing up to launch its first ever phablet. Whatever Nokia ends up launching, or if the event does turn out to be a tea party after all, we’ll definitely keep you in the loop.

Nokia Lumia 928 Owners Reporting Random Freezes

Nokia Lumia 928 Owners Reporting Random FreezesAre you planning on picking up a Nokia Lumia 928 for yourself? If you are perhaps you might want to hold out until an update has been issued because according to a smattering of reports across the internet’s various forums, such as Verizon, Microsoft, Nokia, and etc., it seems that the Lumia 928 is experiencing a bit of a freezing problem. At the moment it is unknown as to why these freezes might be happening, and there does not appear to be a fix. The problem has been reported as how the phone continues to operate, but the issue is that it does not appear to be registering any touch input from the user, essentially making it equivalent to you poking your monitor and expecting something to happen.

It seems that the problem persists even after performing a hard reset on the phone, which undoubtedly sounds pretty troubling. Several comments have pointed out that this has happened to other devices not of the Lumia 928 variety as well, although most of the complaints do come from Lumia 928 users. In any case hopefully Microsoft and Nokia are looking into this and will issue a statement or an update that will fix it soon.

Microsoft Compensates Delayed Lumia 1020 With $150 Gift Card (Rumor)

Microsoft Compensates Delayed Lumia 1020 With $150 Gift Card (Rumor)The AT&T-bound Nokia Lumia 1020 is certainly the best high end Windows Phone 8 device in the market at this point in time, there is no denying it. Some folks from China have even managed to get their hands on one of these bad boys, taking it apart and snapping all the innards along the way. While it is deemed to be a “camera first” smartphone by Nokia themselves, there has been reported instances of of early color accuracy issues which remain to be looked into. The thing is, for those whose order for the Nokia Lumia 1020 has been delayed via the Microsoft store, here is some news that should lighten up your day – it apparently will be accompanied by a complimentary $150 gift card. Definitely a piece of news which will bring a smile to your face, no? Whoever said that good things do not come to those who wait?

Of course, this particular bit of information was gleaned by an email screenshot which could have easily been doctored, so we do not have concrete confirmation on the situation just yet since we ourselves did not place an order for the Lumia 1020 over at the Microsoft Store. Could any of our dear readers verify whether such an email by Microsoft stating the compensation is in circulation?

Nokia RX-114 Tablet Spotted On Benchmark Site

Nokia RX 114 Tablet Spotted On Benchmark SiteHmmm, now this is something interesting – Nokia might be jumping aboard the tablet bandwagon after all, after rumors concerning a possible Nokia Zoom with an image of an alleged expunged Nokia tablet hitting the headlines earlier this month. It is said that Nokia could very well be testing out a Snapdragon 800powered device that runs on the Windows operating system, assuming the data that was spotted in a recent benchmark result could be trusted. After all, it is pretty easy to fake stuff online these days.

Taking on the RX-114 name, it was allegedly spotted in a GFXbench app. Of course, it remains to be seen whether this is a Windows Phone 8 smartphone or Windows RT tablet, but the listing, should it be accurate, states a 1371 x 771 pixels, which would be close to the 1366 x 768 pixel screen size that can be found on the Surface RT, which would increase the possibility of it being a tablet more than a smartphone. If Nokia gets the RX-114 right as a tablet, it might help shed some stigma associated with Microsoft’s Surface tablets, which is shown to be a failed iPad killer, as Microsoft had to reduce the price of the tablet by $150 and eventually write-down $900 million worth of inventory. At least Walmart benefited from the price cut by selling out their inventory, contrary to those who believed otherwise.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Teardown Image

Nokia Lumia 1020 Teardown ImageNokia’s Lumia 1020 has been touted by the Finnish smartphone manufacturers themselves to be a “camera first” device, and phone second. Well, you cannot help but notice that the Nokia Lumia 1020 flagship smartphone is one impressive piece of hardware engineering. Definitely offering improvements in different ways compared to its predecessor, the Nokia Lumia 920, it is the impressive 41-megapixel Pureview camera sensor that undoubtedly is the talk of the smartphone world, and when you throw in double the amount of RAM while retaining all of the connectivity features with a shrinking of measurements in some parts that will see approximately 30 grams of its overall weight shed, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is definitely more than a looker, and it might be a fantastic introductory Windows Phone 8 device.

Do check out an image of the teardown above, where the rest of it can be spotted from a Chinese site. Hopefully the alleged early color accuracy issues will not hinder purchases by potential customers.

Nokia tablet (or large handset) RX-114 appears with Snapdragon 800

It’s not every day that you see two tablet leaks in one day with the same processor under the hood – but that’s just what’s happened with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 in this afternoon’s appearance of the fabled Nokia tablet. This tablet works with code-name Nokia RX-114 and likely runs either full Windows 8 or Windows RT, pushing with it the same processor we saw appear on this morning’s reboot of the Kindle Fire.

nokiatablet-580x425

Could the Qualcomm suggestion that every major OEM in the industry has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor-toting device in the pipeline? It would seem that in addition to the devices we already know run the Snapdragon 800 – like the Samsung Galaxy S 4 LTE-Advanced, we’ll be seeing this quad-core SoC hit the tablet world with force.

Here the Nokia RX-114 is appearing via benchmarking suite GFXBench – which, if you’re curious, can be spoofed – with the following screen size attached: 1371 x 771. That’s pixels across its long side and its short side, suggesting this machine isn’t your everyday ordinary tablet. Microsoft’s Surface works with 1366 x 768 pixels across its 10.6-inch face, so it wouldn’t be that far off from the competition.

Of course when you compare that to even last years’ Nexus 10 tablet with its 2560 x 1600 pixels inside 10.055 inches of display, there’s really a different generation of device appearing. Either this Nokia device is a phablet, or it’s about to find itself out of sorts before it launches.

But consider that – what if it is a large display-toting smartphone? We just saw a faceplate that might match up in a 6-inch panel leaked to a factory floor, and the Nokia Lumia 625 was just delivered with a low-resolution display and a small price tag.

Perhaps we’ll see something similar in the very near future.

Nokia Lumia 1020: My, That’s a Big Camera You’ve Got There

Nokia Lumia 1020: My, That’s a Big Camera You’ve Got There

We’ve been eagerly waiting for Nokia to make the Lumia 1020 since the PureView camera made its debut. And luckily, it doesn’t fall short of expectations.

Nokia “Treasure Tag” will keep your keys in place with Bluetooth and NFC

There’s an accessory line in the making said to be coming from Nokia in the form of a so-called “Treasure Tag” NFC dongle. This device has been tipped to The Verge as an invention strikingly similar to what we’ve seen from Tile, bringing NFC-enabled miniature pieces of plastic that attach to your every beloved device and valuable. Here with Treasure Tag, Nokia will allow you to track a collection of tags in real time, using none other than Nokia Lumia devices’ LiveSight app to track these tags in augmented reality.

nfc

This system will be working with a combination of Bluetooth and NFC, the actual accessories appearing in at least one form: on a loop made with materials not all that different from what we’ve seen from the company in their ever-expanding Lumia-friendly family. There will also be a Treasure Tag app that’ll work with the tags exclusively, showing the location of each sensor on a map.

The phone you’ve paired the Tag with will be able to be located with a long press on the tag, the phone sending out a notification noise until it’s located. The Tag will be able to be found by the phone with the Treasure Tag app.

The tags will be powered by batteries – long lasting “six months of use” batteries, that is – that will be on all the time. An NFC tag cannot send out a signal on its own without a power source, while this system will work with both Bluetooth signals – Bluetooth 4.0, in this case – and NFC to keep your machines together.

Even in Bluetooth 4.0, the range of this technology stays within 100 m (330 ft). Bluetooth 4.0′s interaction with Bluetooth LE (Bluetooth Low Energy) allows the sensor technology to work with low energy, and doesn’t increase its range – it lowers it to half, in fact – making this next-generation innovation have little effect on Nokia’s proposed set of accessories.

So if you’re leaving your keys in the car and you’ve walked through the park and through downtown, you might not be able to see the sensor anymore. This setup would be much more for an “I can’t find my keys in the house” sort of situation.

Windows Phone 8 progress not up to Nokia’s standards

Nokia may be one of Microsoft’s largest partners for Windows Phone 8 devices, but that certainly doesn’t mean that Nokia is 100% happy with the platform. It’s not the lack of Windows Phone devices available, as there are plenty of those, but Nokia is mainly disappointed in the number of apps available and the lack of software updates.

P1010288-nokia-lumia-1020-slashgear-580x3261

Speaking with the International Business Times, Nokia’s vice president of App development, Bryan Biniak, says that Nokia is attempting to get Microsoft back on the horse, as time is running out for the platform to make a big impact, saying that “waiting until the end of your fiscal year when you need to close your targets, doesn’t do us any good when I have phones to sell today.”

Biniak also mentions the lack of apps for Windows Phone, saying that while Nokia makes a lot of Windows Phone devices, no one will buy them if essential apps aren’t available for it. He says that “if there is an app that somebody cares about that’s not there, that’s a missed opportunity of a sale.”

P1010275-nokia-lumia-1020-slashgear-580x326

Essentially, Biniak reiterates what we’ve heard before about the Windows Phone platform: “You can’t sell a phone without the apps, you just can’t,” he says. There are some fantastic Windows Phone 8 devices out on the market, with the latest Lumia 1020 to make an arrival shortly, but Biniak says that without apps, the hardware is useless.

Nokia ‘Treasure Tag’ Accessory Will Make It Easy To Locate Lost Items

Nokia Treasure Tag Accessory Will Make It Easy To Locate Lost Items

We heard last week that Nokia was developing a host of new Bluetooth enabled accessories. Today we get the first indication of one such accessory, which according to The Verge, is going to be called ‘Treasure Tag.’ It uses both Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC to track lost items from a Windows Phone device. The Tag itself will pair with the device through NFC and will have a loop strap through which it can be attached to any item, like a bunch of keys.

A Treasure Tag app has reportedly been built by Nokia for Windows Phone, it will allow users to manage their accessory as well as locate it when its lost. The Tag’s location will be displayed on a map that’s aided by Nokia’s LiveSight augmented reality view. The Tag will also allow users locate a phone that’s paired with it, there will be a button on the device which when pressed will sound a notification alert on the phone, but it has to be within range. Treasure Tag is said to be “always-on,” it might have a battery that will be good for at least six months. The accessory is expected to be released in the coming weeks, after Nokia releases the Amber Windows Phone 8 update that brings support for Bluetooth 4.0.
