Nokia Lumia 520 continues dominating Windows Phone universe

It would appear that the first appearance of the Nokia Lumia 520 as the most common smartphone in use across the world earlier this year was not just a fluke. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Instead we’re seeing this device continue to grow in popularity, quite likely because of its relative low cost […]

Nokia Lumia 525 Reportedly Being Released Soon

Nokia Lumia 525 Reportedly Being Released Soon

Prior to Nokia World 2013, it was rumored that the company might finally unveil a successor to its successful Lumia 520 smartphone. The successor was believed to be internally known as “Glee,” and it is said to be music centric. However, Nokia didn’t even mention the Lumia 525 a.k.a “Glee” at its event, but even then rumors about its impending release have been coming in almost every week. The infamous Twitter leaker @evleaks adds more fuel to this fire, claiming recently that the Lumia 525 will be available in yellow, white and orange colors.

It just remains to be seen when Nokia finally announces the Lumia 525, seeing as how it has accidently confirmed its existence already. Nokia’s website recently gave it away, listing the Lumia 525 as one of the prizes that Nokia All Access Live Nation Contest contestants have a chance of winning. Though it is still not known in what markets will the Lumia 525 be launched initially, what its price is going to be and exactly when its going to be available. One thing is for sure, it has big shoes to fill, seeing as how its predecessor, the Lumia 520, has had an amazing run in the market. Lumia 525 is believed to be a similar, low-end Windows Phone running the latest GDR3 update.

Nokia “Glee” Might Actually Be The Lumia 525

Nokia Glee Might Actually Be The Lumia 525

A few days ago we reported that Nokia is expected to launch a new low end Lumia smartphone which will be music centric. The smartphone reportedly carries the “Glee” codename. Recent reports suggest that this device might actually be the successor to Nokia’s insanely popular Lumia 520. This particular device, Lumia 520, is actually said to be the single best selling Windows device out there and Nokia might be willing to build to its success with the Lumia 525 a.k.a the Glee.

Details about the Lumia 525, which itself is an alleged moniker, are scarce at this point in time. It is not known exactly what internal hardware this smartphone will tout. This device will no doubt be important for Nokia and Windows Phone in general, since it would essentially seek to achieve the same level of success that the Lumia 520 has. The primary reason why Lumia 520 is popular is due to its competitive price, and the fact that it does so much more than other phones available in or around the same price bracket. Nokia has an event scheduled on October 22nd in Abu Dhabi, UAE. There, it is expected to unveil six new devices, including a new tablet. The Lumia 525 a.k.a Glee is also expected to be announced there.

Nokia Lumia 521 vs Samsung Galaxy S II: budget boxing

Thought Samsung has long since moved on from the second-generation Galaxy and tech news in general forgets about essentially any phone (even the Lumia 520) almost without fail once they’ve been out for a short period of time, there’s a battle going on at T-Mobile between these two machines. Both the Nokia Lumia 521 (as […]

Nokia Lumia 520 unveiled as first 4G Windows Phone AT&T GoPhone offering

Subscribers on AT&T‘s prepaid service GoPhone will have access to their first Windows Phone device, a Nokia Lumia 520, on July 26, according to an announcement the carrier made today. The handset is able to be used on the carrier’s expansive 4G network, and comes with a relatively budget-friendly price tag of $99.99 USD.

The Nokia Lumia 520 features a 4-inch IPS display with a WVGA resolution. Inside, users will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor running at 1GHz alongside 512MB of RAM. There’s 8GB of internal storage space, which can be expanded via the microSD card slot. There’s also a 5-megapixel camera around back.

AT&T goes on to push the camera feature a bit, which includes a few features like Cinemagraph for adding motion to images, super-wide-angle capture, and Smart Shoot, which snaps five images and, after the user selects certain elements out of each, combines them into a single group shot. Unfortunately, as we noted in our review, there is no LED flash.

As far as connectivity goes, there’s 4G as noted above, with dual-band HSDPA up to 21.2Mbps download and 5.7Mbps upload. In addition, users will find Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi b/g/n. There’s no NFC, and unfortunately no means for wireless charging either, neither of which is surprising given the price of the handset.

AT&T’s Senior Vice President of Devices, Jeff Bradley, said: “We are excited to launch the first 4G Windows Phone 8 smartphone in our GoPhone portfolio. A diverse device ecosystem benefits everyone, and the addition of an affordable Windows device gives our customers yet another choice that fits their needs.”

Lumia 520 now world’s top Windows Phone as Nokia dominates market

While most people would think that flagship devices are the most popular, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes, it’s the budget devices that top the list, as is the case with Windows Phone. According to Windows Phone advertising company AdDuplex, the Nokia Lumia 520 is the world’s most popular Windows Phone handset.

    nokia_lumia_520_review_9-580x420

Specifically, the Lumia 520 controls 13.3% of the total Windows Phone market, while Nokia itself owns a whopping 85% of the Windows Phone market, mostly thanks to the Finnish company’s big partnership with Microsoft. However, Windows Phone still has a long way to go before it catches up with iOS or Android.

However, that isn’t stopping Windows Phone sales. While the Lumia 520 hasn’t seen exponential growth, its sales have been doing nothing but rising since the phone’s release back in March. Sales numbers aren’t disclosed, since AdDuplex bases its numbers on app adoption.

Nonetheless, it seems Microsoft and Nokia have a hold on the budget device market, while Google, Samsung, HTC, and other big companies have a hold on the top-tier device market. However, Nokia is aiming their sights on that category as well. Their flagship Lumia 920 has been out for some time, and they just recently announced the 1020 with a 41MP camera attached.

As for other Nokia handsets, the Lumia 920 comes in second with 11.8% of the Windows Phone market, followed by the Lumia 620 with 9.6%. Six other Nokia Lumia phones make the list, but the HTC 8X gets sliver of the pie with 3.7% of the Windows Phone market share.

    Nokia Lumia 521 Review

If you thought the Nokia Lumia 520 was good, boy are you going to have a great time with the Nokia Lumia 521. Essentially the same device as you’ll be getting internationally, this T-Mobile iteration of the entry-level Windows Phone 8 device brings the same package (with slightly different radio connections and a few extra apps) to the USA, here with the same bright white back cover as we saw across the sea (one of three, as it were).

    Hardware

With the Nokia Lumia 521 you’re rolling with a 4-inch display (running at WVGA) which, if you’re using anything sharper at the moment, will be just a bit more pixely than you’ll want to live with. This machine is, instead, made for those users upgrading from feature phones – and it’ll do a fine job of it.

    IMG_8337wtmk

The handset measures in at 4.9 x 2.5 x 0.4 inches and weighs just 4.4 ounces – it’s lighter than it looks. You’ll connect to this machine with a microUSB cord (included in the box) and a microSIM for data, and both the back cover and the battery within are removable. There’s also a microSD card slot under the hood for an additional 32GB of space if you do so desire – you may want to pick up a microSD card when you purchase the smartphone since the 521 works with just 8GB of internal storage.

    IMG_8338wtmk

Inside you’ve got a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor at 1GHz paired with 512MB of RAM. Again, this is meant to be an upgrade for the feature phone crowd and not a battle-ready beast for the top-tier entrants in the Windows Phone 8 world. That said, this machine is swift as much of the Windows Phone 8 crowd simply because the processor paired with this screen – small and low-res as it is – makes for hot-tapping and access to the basic collection of apps available to the whole Windows Phone 8 smartphone collection.*

    IMG_8336wtmk

You won’t be set up for future implementation of T-Mobile’s LTE network, instead kicking it up to today’s fastest data speeds from the network at HSPA+ 21. We’ll be bringing you “top speed” results as soon as we can kick out speeds above the general average – for now you’ll take comfort in knowing we’ve not have a dropped signal anywhere inside the metro area in Minneapolis / Saint Paul, Minnesota.

The back of this machine is replaceable – compatible with the international edition of the handset as well, so finding even 3rd-party offerings in the wild-and-wacky case-making environment will work. Or SHOULD work – always be cautions if you’re buying 3rd party gear. Nokia brings the heat with this machine in white (seen here) as well as yellow, blue, and red.

    Software

It should be made clear that this device brings Nokia’s unique collection of Windows Phone apps to the show – the same as each other Lumia both here in the USA and overseas. While you’ll get a limited number of these on the device right out of the box, you’ll have Nokia’s app portals to keep you busy.

    IMG_8340wtmk

*At this point in history it’s difficult to find a smartphone running Windows Phone (Windows Phone 8 and forward, that is), that isn’t able to work with every app in Microsoft’s official app store. Nokia also provides such unique offerings (available to Lumia devices only) as Nokia Music, HERE Maps, HERE Drive, and HERE Transit. It’s all HERE, you could say.

    IMG_8345wtmk

All except – notably – app abilities such as the augmented reality bits of City Lens (as seen with the Nokia Lumia 920 demo we got all the way back in September of 2012, courtesy of Nokia) inside HERE Maps. This doesn’t exist on this machine due to the lack of a digital compass in the 521. With A-GPS and Glonass you’ve still got turn-by-turn navigation throughout the USA

    Camera

While there’s no front-facing camera on this machine, the back-facing 5-megapixel shooter is more than enough for the standard social networking sharing and general photo-taking activities you’ll be inevitably taking part in. While Nokia’s real industry-leading efforts in the camera world rest with devices like the Lumia 925 (internationally) and the Lumia 928 (here in the USA with Verizon), the Lumia 521 brings a decent “that’ll do” sort of setup – which you’ll see in example photos and video here.

    Battery

While Nokia rates this device at 7.5 hours talk time with standby at 12.5 days, we’ve found the 1430mAh battery to be standing up to a full days’ standard use without issue. If you’re a heavy user, on the other hand, expect to knock this battery out in a matter of hours – especially if you’re streaming video from something like T-Mobile TV (also built in to the device, courtesy of the carrier.)

    IMG_8339wtmk

    Wrap-Up

The Nokia Lumia 521 isn’t the nicest Windows Phone 8 device on the market – and it’s certainly not the hottest Nokia machine out today – but it’s not meant to be. Working to be the cost-cutting entry level to the Windows Phone 8 universe with the good ship Nokia – that’s the aim. That’s what this machine will do, too – expect quite a few upgrades to higher-powered Lumia devices once the 521 is paid for in full by users on T-Mobile.
