Nokia Teases Lumia 928 In Low Light Camera Test, Pits It Against Galaxy S3 & iPhone 5

lumia 928

Nokia is teasing the Lumia 928 — a phone it has not officially announced yet, despite all the leaksrumours and, er, magazine ads – in a camera comparison video posted on its U.S. website. All this teasing smells like a new strategy for Nokia to try to manufacture a little hype for the forthcoming Windows Phone 8 flagship, which is apparently heading to Verizon.

The camera comparison pits the Lumia 928 against two of the most hyped smartphones in the tech world: the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the iPhone 5. Although the Lumia device is not identified by name in the actual text or video on the page, the URL is far less coy: http://www.nokia.com/us-en/lumia928

The page does confirm the device will have an 8.7MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics and the optical image stabilization first seen on the Lumia 920. The camera specs are in fact exactly the same as the 920′s. The design, however, looks rather more slab-like — with what look like blunted sides, vs the 920′s rounded edges.

According to Nokia’s low light camera test — conducted at a fairground in New York — the Lumia has greater colour saturation and sharper image focus than the iPhone 5, and less video noise and sharper image focus than the Galaxy S3. But then Nokia would say that, wouldn’t they?

It’s certainly interesting to note  Nokia has picked on last year’s flagship Galaxy for the comparison, rather than pitting it against Samsung’s latest flagship: the Galaxy S4 (which has a 13MP rear camera).

Nokia’s worst-kept-secret in Windows Phone, the Lumia 928, may not be officially announced, but that hasn’t stopped the company from pitting it against the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III in a low-light camera test. The Finns still aren’t mentioning the Lumia 928 by name – though the video comparison is at the Lumia 928 page – but there’s already an official image of the phone showing its aesthetic changes from the Lumia 920 and confirming the 8.7-megapixel PureView camera.

“See how the 8.7MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics and Optical Image Stabilization outperforms leading smartphones in all kinds of lighting conditions” Nokia’s tagline crows, alongside press shots of the somewhat slab-sided phone. Just as the previous advert leaks have indicated, the Lumia 928 is a more squared off handset than previous Lumia, with a narrow colored bar running around the edge in a way that reminds us a little of the Sony Xperia Z.

Still, the hardware is expected to be broadly in line with the Lumia 920, with a 4.5-inch display. The Lumia 928 could use an AMOLED panel rather than the LCD of the 920, however, along with including radio support for Verizon; the carrier was namechecked in print versions of the PureView commercial earlier this week.

As for the camera testing, Nokia apparently took the Lumia 928 along with a couple of its competitors to Adventureland in Farmingdale, New York, where they were strapped to the front of “The Hurricane” rollercoaster. That gives the Finnish company the chance to show off the improved low-light performance and the reduction in shake; if Nokia can also deliver that without the bulk and weight that the Lumia 920 was criticized for, then the Lumia 928 could stand a much better chance in the market.

Still, the one phone we’d have liked to have seen compared – the HTC One – wasn’t invited on the daytrip, and so it remains to be seen whether Nokia’s PureView fettling will squash HTC’s UltraPixel technology. Given the speed at which Nokia is gushing Lumia 928 details, however, we can’t be far off the official release and some concrete answers.

Nokia Lumia 928 Webpage Goes Live Prior To Announcement

Nokia Lumia 928 Webpage Goes Live Prior To Announcement

There’s comprehensive evidence mounting against the fact that Nokia Lumia 928 does exist and that it will be releasing soon. We’ve seen leaked images of this upcoming device, billboards going up before they were apparently supposed to and now the Lumia 928 webpage has gone live. This, despite the fact that both Nokia and its exclusive carrier partner for this device are yet to officially announce this smartphone. The Nokia Lumia 928 is believed to be Verizon exclusive.

Nokia’s USA website is now touting a full blown webpage for the Lumia 928 smartphone, though it does not list the specifications or any relevant details of the smartphone. A magazine ad about this smartphone was published recently in which it was mentioned that Lumia 928 camera touts Nokia’s PureView technology with a Carl Zeiss lens. Rumored specifications of Nokia Lumia 928 include a 4.5 inch PureMotion HD display, a dualcore processor and a Xenon flash on the back. It goes without saying that this device will run on Windows Phone 8. Verizon Wireless is yet to officially announce it, and it is not known yet whether the device will be coming over to other carriers as well.

Nokia Lumia 928 gets PureView-focused official nod

Nokia’s Lumia 928 is undoubtedly a foregone conclusion, with print adverts showing up for the new PureView-branded Windows Phone even as Nokia holds off on its official Verizon reveal. Latest to spill the cellular beans is a full, double-page spread in Vanity Fair, an Engadget tipster shared, confirming the handset’s Carl Zeiss optics and homemade optical image stabilization. Meanwhile, Nokia’s own site has confirmed that the phone is indeed in the pipeline.

The URL mentioned in the advert – nokia.com/lumia928 – is, surprisingly, already active, though there’s less detail to be found than in the print version. The image is the same, aside from the Verizon logo being absent, and there are no specifications; however, the filename of the image itself does confirm that this is the Lumia 928.

Chatter of the Lumia 928 has been circulating for some time now, with early talk of an aluminum chassis and a more squared off design than the Lumia 920 that the phone is presumed to be based upon. Like the 920, the 928 is expected to use a 4.5-inch display, though there has been talk of Nokia using AMOLED panel technology rather than the ClearBlack LCD of the older device.

Nokia will hold a Lumia event on May 14, though given that will be in London it would imply that either the Lumia 928 is intended for regions beyond Verizon’s coverage, or that the phone will be the support act for another, more broadly available phone. That could well be the device believed to be codenamed EOS, a more photography-centric handset that, so the speculation suggests, could have a waterproof aluminum coating.

Waterproofing may well be something Nokia is looking to push in its new 2013 line-up. The beach photography shown in this Lumia 928 commercial could be a hint that the phone will have a weather-resistant casing.

New Nokia Lumia Expected ‘Later This Quarter’; Will It Be The Lumia 928?

New Nokia Lumia Expected Later This Quarter; Will It Be The Lumia 928?

We’ve been seeing a number of leaks this week for Nokia’s upcoming Lumia 928, which is currently codenamed Catwalk, as we’ve seen Verizon-branded parts as well as actual leaked images of the device. Now it looks like Nokia themselves have hinted at the upcoming Lumia 928 today.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said today during an earnings call with investors “later this quarter, a new Lumia device is anticipated to have hero status with a leading US carrier” and the new Lumia will “mark the beginning of a season of new product introductions.” This isn’t the first time Elop has teased the Lumia 928 as we believe he was eluding to the device when he said “beautiful phones” were incoming. Nokia Lumia 928 Render Leaked In White [Rumor]

Nokia Lumia 928 Render Leaked In White [Rumor]Within the past 24 hours, a supposed leak of the Nokia Lumia 928 with Verizon branding hit the Internet. Today, we’re seeing another possible leak of the Nokia Lumia 928, but this time, in white.

The white Nokia Lumia 928 possibly leaked renders looks exactly like the device that was leaked yesterday, but of course the main difference between the two being this one comes in white. We’re pretty sure the specs @evleaks leaked of the Lumia 928 yesterday will be included in this white version, which means you should expect it to have a 4.5-inch OLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Unfortunately for us and those who are interested in seeing as much of the Nokia Lumia 928 as possible, @evleaks has only leaked the back of the device, although we’re sure you can just imagine the previously leaked black Lumia 928′s front side to be completely covered in white. We guess that will have to do for now until there’s either another leak of the white Lumia 928′s front, or when Nokia decides to unveil the device.

Purported Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 Image Leaked

Purported Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 Image Leaked

It has been rumored for quite some time now that Nokia has another Lumia device under its belt, called the Lumia 928. A purported image of Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon has been leaked on Twitter by @evleaks, who just last week leaked the image of HTC First as well. It was previously reported that Nokia would be using an aluminium frame for the 928, now it is believed that the device is made using a thinner polycarbonate which allows it to be a bit thinner than the Lumia 920. Verizon is expected to announce the Lumia 928 by the end of this month.

The rumored specs of Verizon Nokia Lumia 928 point towards a 4.5 inch OLED display, a 1.5Ghz dualcore processor with 1GB or RAM and 32GB of internal storage. It is said to be marginally thinner than the 920, 10.2 millimeters to be precise as opposed to the 920′s 10.7 millimeters  The device will reportedly support simultaneous voice and data over 4G LTE. Twitter user @evleaks has mostly been right about his leaks, which makes it difficult to doubt the legitimacy of this particular Nokia Lumia 928 image leak.
