Barnes & Noble Sees Dismal Nook Sales During Holiday Season

Barnes & Noble today reported its holiday sales results from the nine-week period that ended on December 28th. While most major companies saw record breaking sales throughout the holiday season, B&N wasn’t able to replicate their success. In fact, its Nook business lost quite a bit of ground that it had gained around the same period in 2012. Total revenue from Nook, which includes accessories and devices sales as well as digital content, totalled just $125 million, slumping 65.5 percent as opposed to the same time in 2012.

Nook devices and accessories didn’t see much interest from consumers throughout the holiday season, sales fell 66.7 percent year-over-year. Barnes & Noble says that lower average selling prices and slow sales are to blame for the decline. It pulled in $36.5 million during the holiday season through digital content sales, registering a 27.3 percent year-over-year decline. Retail sales at its brick-and-mortar stores also registered a decline, albeit a small one, at 6.6 percent. B&N released these figures after announcing the immediate appointment of Michael Huseby as CEO yesterday. Huseby will be focusing on the Nook business and believes that the decline is largely due to the company’s decision not to release any new devices in 2013. On the other hand, its rival Amazon reported a record breaking holiday season, naming Kindle Fire tablets and e-readers as some of the most sold devices in the run up to Cyber Monday.

Calvin and Hobbes ebooks appear: iPad, Kindle, Nook readied

Here near the end of 2013 the comic adventure universe of Calvin & Hobbes has reached the digital realm at last, being presented as a set of ebooks for several platforms. While it’s not entirely clear whether this is the doing of Bill Watterson himself or those that he’d battled for years over the rights […]

NOOK GlowLight Has A Hidden Browser

Don’t you just love Easter Eggs? I am not referring to the kind where you are able to eat after peeling away at the beautifully painted shell, but rather, the kind of surprises that developers put in their software or work to surprise users upon its discovery. GTA 5 has nearly 30 of those, while Google Maps too, has a Tardis Easter Egg. When it comes to the Barnes & Noble NOOK GlowLight, it might not seem as though it is capable of browsing the Internet with a browser, but if you know where to look, one browser has been tucked away in the GlowLight, although a little bit of work is required to uncover it.

This is not the first time that B&N has shipped a NOOK eReader with a hidden web browser, and we are not quite sure whether it will be the last, either. It is there to help you locate something on the Internet should you happen to have issues with linking up your NOOK to a Google account. On the bright side, you can also tap a few buttons to check out a Google search box that can then be used to perform a search on the web. Far from being a fully functional web browser, you will not find any Back button or download manager, but hey, something is better than nothing, right? Enjoy the video above of the NOOK GlowLight browser trick.

New Barnes & Noble NOOK Arrives At The FCC

New Barnes & Noble NOOK Arrives At The FCCWhile the folks over at Barnes & Noble might be working to alter their Android tablet strategy, they have not quite yet forgotten about the NOOK digital bookstore alongside the hardware that will be able to read such eBooks. In fact, it has been brought to our attention that Barnes & Noble could very well roll out a new eReader in due time, not to mention the possibility of additional new tablets being in the pipeline even as you read this.

Why do we say this? Oh yeah, perhaps the appearance of a next-generation NOOK over at the FCC website might have something to do with it. While this upcoming NOOK eReader might resemble something that the company is offering at this moment, there will be at least one improvement. This improvement would be the apparent inclusion of 4GB of internal memory, which is more or less double of what one would find within a NOOK Simple Touch or NOOK Simple Touch With GlowLight. Assuming 2GB is enough space to stash around 1,000 eBooks, then doubling that amount would also see up to 2,000 eBooks stored on the new NOOK device. Needless to say, we await with bated breath for additional information on the device to be released when it becomes official.
