Toshiba adds Haswell to refreshed Satellite U and M laptops

While Toshiba already outed its Haswell plans, the company has chosen today to unveil a few more PCs. The outfit’s refreshing its Satellite U and M range in the UK, with the U50t being equipped with a 10-point touchscreen and Windows 8 onboard. The Satellite M50D and M50Dt, meanwhile, boast AMD’s latest APU processors and Radeon graphics. The whole line (which is slated for dispatch in Q3) ships with Intel’s fourth-generation processors and HD 4400 graphics, while those needing a bit more oomph on the pixel pushing side can opt for NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 740M. As you’d expect, Intel’s WiDi and Miracast technologies are infused, and each machine arrives with a full-size HDMI port, Bluetooth 4.0, an SD card slot and a pair of USB 3.0 sockets. Tosh isn’t talking pricing just yet, but you can dig into the specification list just after break.

Corning introduces Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops, coming this fall

DNP Corning introduces Gorilla Glass NBT for touchbased laptops, available this fall

While we love our gadgets for their glass-capacitive touchscreens, they can be sensitive to scratches and fingerprints. Corning, best known for protecting our phone and tablet displays, is introducing Gorilla Glass NBT for touch-enabled laptops. This new ultra-strong covering promises enhanced scratch resistance, reduced flaw visibility and better retained strength once a blemish occurs — basically, the same benefits as GG3. Dell is the first manufacturer to jump on-board with NBT and plans to use it on some notebooks this fall. Does this mean you wont have to be nearly as careful when schlepping your computer in a messenger bag? Probably not, but at least your precious displays will be safer from errant kitty paws. PR after the break.

Dell officially unveils Precision M3800 workstation at SIGGRAPH, gives rumored specs a nod

Dell officially unveils Precision M3800 workstation at SIGGRAPH, gives rumored specs a nod

Remember that Haswell-powered Dell workstation that popped up last week? The company is officially ready to acknowledged its silicon, announcing on its corporate blog that the machine is being unveiled at SIGGRAPH this week. Dell is still reluctant to get into specifics, but confirmed on a teaser page that the Precision M3800 would contain a 4th Generation Intel Core-i7 CPU, NVIDIA Quadro graphics and a 3,200 x 1,800 QHD+ multi-touch IGZO display. Even better, all that is set to fit into a tight 0.7-inch chassis that weighs in at 4.5 pounds. Mum’s still the word on specifics, but previous leaks assigned the machine 15GB of RAM and either a 1TB HDD or a 512GB SSD. Dell hasn’t let the workstation’s price slip either, but we don’t expect it to be cheap — nothing thin and powerful ever is.

Gateway NE notebooks slim down and power up with Haswell

The Gateway team this week brings on not just a new set of desktop machines for students and families, but a set of Gateway NE Series notebooks as well. This series starts at 15.6-inch (1366 x 768) and ramps up to a 17.3-inch (1600 x 900 resolution) Ultrabright LED-backlit display, these models both working with the latest in Intel and AMD processors backed up by up to 8GB of DDR3 dual-channel memory. And the whole lot runs Windows 8 too, of course.

This line of notebooks brings on two built-in stereo speakers with full HD audio support. They’ve each got HD webcams to send your image out unto the earth as well, rounding out this system of student-friendly web chat with a full-sized keyboard and dedicated keypad.

ALong the edges of these notebooks you’ll find one USB 3.0 and a set of two USB 2.0 ports. There’s a full-sized HDMI port for video out to HD displays, while most models work with a real-deal super-muli DVD drive with M-DISC READY for what the company calls “proven permanent archival quality data.”

There’s a Gateway NE5 model coming in first with a 15.6-inch display that’ll be measuring in at just 1.0-inch thin. There’s also a Gateway NE7 with a 17.3-inch display at just 1.36 inches thin, this larger model starting at $449.99 USD while the smaller starts at $379.99 USD, while the full line works with a one year limited parts and labor warranty.

Dell Precision M3800 MacBook Pro rival confirmed: 3200 x 1800 display rumored

Dell has confirmed to SlashGear that it is readying an unannounced mobile workstation, the Precision M3800, tipped to take on Apple’s MacBook Pro with a Retina-besting 3200 x 1800 15.6-inch display. Due to hit desks before the year is out, the new notebook packs a quadcore Intel Core i7-4702MQ processor and up to 16GB of memory, according to Tweakers, and a choice of either 1TB of standard hard-drive space or 512GB of SSD storage.

dell_precision_m3800_leak

It’s the display that’s most interesting, though, with the Precision M3800 said to offer a choice of resolutions from 1920 x 1080 Full HD, up to a whopping 3200 x 1800. Considering Apple’s MacBook Pro 15 has 2880 x 1800, that would put the M3800 just ahead.

Driving that display is expected to be NVIDIA’s Quadro K1100M GPU, complete with up to 2GB of dedicated memory. If the graphics chip sounds unfamiliar then you’re not alone; it’s not yet been announced by NVIDIA.

Ports on the 15.6-inch notebook are said to include four USB 3.0, HDMI, and an SD card reader, though no ethernet connection; instead, Dell is said to have followed Apple’s example and relied on a separate adapter dongle for that. There’s still room for either 61Wh or 91Wh batteries, though, though no word on how long the Precision M3800 will last on a full charge.

The Windows 8 notebook will be offered with or without a touchscreen, and Dell will supposedly be charging between $1,699 and $1,999 for the matte black, aluminum-trimmed machine.

Dell would not confirm the full specifications, though did tell SlashGear that the notebook is indeed an upcoming model.

“Dell is introducing the thinnest and lightest workstation ever later this year” a spokesperson told us. “The Dell Precision M3800 is the first mobile workstation that is less than 3/4 of an inch, at 18mm, weighs only 4.5lbs and offers certified performance and dependability for creative professionals. We are not releasing or confirming any additional details today but stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.”

Report: Dell Precision M3800 workstation to launch with 3,200 x 1,800 display option (updated)

Dell Precision M3800 laptop

According to a source speaking to Dutch site Tweakers.net, which has been spot on with a previous Dell leak, a new laptop known as the M3800 is set to join Dell’s Precision range of workstations. An Intel Core i7-4702MQ (Haswell) processor will reportedly power the M3800, with a 2GB NVIDIA Quadro K1100M GPU taking care of graphics. It’s expected to come with up to 16GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive or 512GB SSD and two options for the 15.6-inch screen: a 3,200 x 1,800 resolution or a 1080p panel as the base option. The workstation is said to measure 18mm (around 0.7 inches) at its thickest point, and tip the scales at 2kg (4.4 pounds). Integrated docking found on other Precision models is apparently not in the M3800’s feature set; it’s also missing an Ethernet port, so hard-lines will need to be connected via a USB intermediate. Tweakers.net lists an expected price range of $1,699 to $1,999, but now comes the part where we wait for the M3800 to go official and see how correct all this leaked info is.

Update: Dell has now provided us with a statement that confirms that the M3800 is indeed coming later this year, although it’s not yet confirming all of the specs. More information is promised in the coming weeks.

Lenovo Yoga 11 Windows RT seemingly axed as official store stops sales

Lenovo has apparently discontinued its only Windows RT notebook, the IdeaPad Yoga 11 convertible, quietly ceasing sales through its own online store. The Yoga 11, which ran the pared-back Windows RT on NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chipset, has seemingly been superseded by the newer Yoga 11S, which swaps out the ARM chipset and replaces it with an Intel Core i3 processor and a full copy of Windows 8.

lenovo_ideapad_yoga_11_windows_rt

The end result is a far more flexible machine. In our original Yoga 11 review, we praised the unusual form-factor but were forced to conclude that Windows RT – and its limitations on software – meant that it wasn’t an all-round work and play machine.

In contrast, as we found when we reviewed the Yoga 11S recently, the presence of Windows 8 makes a big difference for usability. Even though the notebook may be part of Lenovo’s more consumer-centric IdeaPad range, rather than a ThinkPad, it’s still capable of standing up to business use.

lenovo_ideapad_yoga_11_windows_rt_discontinued

Lenovo is yet to comment on the Windows RT version, though if it has indeed been discontinued as the online store suggests, the company wouldn’t be alone in its disappointment with the OS. Dell admitted back in June that sales of its Windows RT tablets had been disappointing, and Microsoft itself recently slashed pricing of its Surface RT worldwide to try to drive demand.

Acer, meanwhile, has described the OS as “not influential” and has no plans for a machine that will run it, and there’s chatter of Microsoft cutting its licensing fees for OEMs too. An incoming update of the Surface RT will supposedly use Windows RT 8.1 and include faster chips and the option of embedded LTE.

We’ve contacted Lenovo for more information, and will update if and when the company gets back to us.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite gets priced and dated for imminent US launch

Samsung‘s ATIV Book 9 Lite will hit US stores on July 28, Samsung has confirmed, with the new touchscreen Windows 8 ultraportable up for preorder today. Announced at Samsung’s Premiere event last month, the 13.3-inch notebook is priced from $799.99 with AMD’s quadcore 1.4GHz A6 chipset inside, and a 10-finger multitouch display.

samsung_ativ_book_9_lite_live_1

There are also AMD Radeon graphics and 4GB of DDR3 memory, while storage is courtesy of a 128GB SSD. Connectivity includes WiFi, micro HDMI, mini VGA, two USB ports (one 2.0, the other 3.0), an SDXC card reader, and a headset socket.

Samsung is claiming the 1366 x 768 ultraportable will run for up to 5.5hrs on a single charge, which is short of what Apple is offering from the Intel Haswell powered 2013 MacBook Air. The 13-inch Air we recently tested ran for more than double that, though it’s worth noting that it’s at least $300 more than the Samsung.

The 12.76 x 8.82 x 0.69 inch, 3.48 pound chassis is made of plastic – you’ll need to step up to the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus if you want metal – though from our hands-on with the notebook we know it feels sturdy and well put together. Samsung will offer it in white or black finishes.

It also plays nicely with your smartphone, assuming you have a Samsung Android device. Hooked up via USB, Samsung SideSync makes it possible to send messages; browse maps, photos, and other multimedia; and edit files stored on the Galaxy handset from the ATIV Book 9 Lite’s keyboard and touchpad. Dragging and dropping files between the two is also supported.

Digital Storm VELOCE gaming notebook

If there ever was an oxymoron, a gaming notebook would fit the mould in my books. After all, if you want a lean, mean, gaming machine, a souped up desktop would work to your advantage a whole lot more than a notebook which has its innards pimped out to resemble the performance of a gaming desktop. I know, there has been some notable standouts in the world of gaming notebooks in the past, but lugging those bad boys around can be hazardous to your health, especially when you do not want to dislocate your shoulder after a long day on the showfloor with a monster of a gaming notebook in your backpack. Enter Digital Storm’s VELOCE gaming notebook that intends to shatter conventional views about it.

For starters, the VELOCE gaming notebook is a 13.3” slim machine which definitely has looks that betrays its performance. Most folks might think of the VELOCE to be an ordinary working machine, but despite its 4.6 pound chassis (battery included) that measures a mere 1.26” thin, it packs more than enough graphical and gaming firepower underneath the hood to take you and a bunch of other naysayers aback.

The VELOCE holds the distinction of being the first Haswell powered slim gaming notebook that comes with a Full HD resolution display that will certainly not come up short when it wants to show off stunning visuals. Depending on the hardware configuration of your choice, the VELOCE gaming notebook would retail from $1,535 upwards, and runs on an Intel Core i7 4800MQ processor, NVIDIA’s GTX 765M graphics card, carries 8GB RAM, and a full high-resolution HD screen (1920×1080) 13.3″ display as mentioned earlier. There is also enough room to stash a couple of drives (mSATA & 2.5”) in a RAID configuration, while connectivity options include a dedicated internal network port, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports, HDMI 1.4, VGA video out ports and Bluetooth. Are your hands itching to wrap around the VELOCE gaming notebook? It will be available from July 17th onwards.
