NTT DOCOMO Changes Stance On Tizen Hardware Availability

NTT DOCOMO Changes Stance On Tizen Hardware AvailabilityLast week we reported that Japanese carrier NTT DOCOMO announced their support of Samsung’s Tizen platform and would carry its hardware as well. That’s good news for Samsung as NTT DOCOMO is Japan’s largest carrier and would no doubt be a boon for them, but unfortunately it looks like NTT DOCOMO has had a change of heart and will n longer be carrying the Tizen hardware. According to the carrier, the reason behind this is because the Japanese smartphone market was apparently not growing fast enough where the carrier would be able to support three different operating systems simultaneously (iOS and Android being the other two).

This was backed by a recent study by IDC Japan who found that the country’s smartphone market only grew 2.2% from April-September last year. According to the carrier’s spokesperson, So Hiroki, “The market is not big enough to support three operating systems at this time.” Naturally this is quite a big blow to Samsung although they have yet to comment on the matter just yet. All is not lost as Hiroki did state that the carrier would continue to work to help develop Tizen, although when Tizen hardware will see a launch on the carrier’s network remains unknown. Some have speculated that NTT DOCOMO’s iPhone offering could be the reason why they changed their minds, although the carrier has since denied this.

iPhone Attributed To NTT DOCOMO’s Growth In Subscribers

iPhone Attributed To NTT DOCOMOs Growth In SubscribersFor many years Japan’s largest carrier, NTT DOCOMO, resisted Apple and did not bring the iPhone onto its networks. However as the years passed and their rivals started to offer the iPhone, NTT DOCOMO realized that they were starting to lose subscribers to the competition and started to rethink their strategy. One of the reasons why the carrier had been so unwilling was because of the conditions and obligations that Apple imposed on its partners, and also because Apple refused to allow NTT DOCOMO to preinstall their own apps on the iPhone, primarily because Apple did not want bloatware from carrier to affect the overall iPhone experience. Eventually NTT DOCOMO gave in and finally offered the iPhone starting with the iPhone 5s, and thanks to new reports, it looks like the carrier has started to reap the benefits.

According to reports, it seems that NTT DOCOMO has managed to add an additional 279,000 new subscribers in December alone, making it the first time in two years that the carrier, despite being the largest in Japan, surpassed its rivals KDDI and Softbank in customer growth. While DOCOMO did not reveal how many iPhones it has managed to sell, a company spokesperson confirmed that Apple’s iPhone was one of the main reasons for its growth last month. Say what you will about the iPhone and the people use it, but it is hard to deny that it is anything but good for business. That being said, we can’t wait to see how the iPhone will impact China’s largest telco, China Mobile, as well.

NTT DoCoMo’s Tizen Handset Goes Through The FCC

NTT DoCoMos Tizen Handset Goes Through The FCC

There has been a lot of speculation about Samsung’s highly anticipated Tizen handset. Already dubbed by the company as a “simple alternative to Android,” Samsung is yet to publicly release a device that’s powered by the Tizen OS that it has built in collaboration with Intel. Recent rumors suggest that Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo has been pushing Samsung to release its Tizen smartphone soon, and it appears that the carrier’s variant of the first Samsung Tizen smartphone has gone through the FCC, receiving approval for its network radios.

Carrying model number SC-03F, the smartphone seems to be similar in design with the Galaxy S4. There’s no word about what specifications it touts under the hood, but its expected that they’ll at least be similar to what’s found in the Galaxy S3. Samsung has already confirmed that it is going to unveil the first Tizen devices in February a day before the Mobile World Congress 2014 takes place. Samsung says it will give attendees an “exclusive sneak preview” of the devices. But still it stays mum on when the public can finally expect these devices in the market. If one were to guess, it may perhaps happen towards the end of the first half of 2014. [Image via FCC]

NTT DOCOMO Still Bleeding Subscribers Despite Offering The New iPhones

NTT DOCOMO Still Bleeding Subscribers Despite Offering The New iPhonesJapan’s NTT DOCOMO was the last of the major Japan carriers to start offering the iPhone, although they did kick that off with Apple’s new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. One of the reasons the carrier decided to sign on with Apple was because they were tired of losing subscribers to their rivals, such as KDDI and Softbank who offered the iPhone way before NTT DOCOMO did. Unfortunately it seems that despite offering the new iPhones, NTT DOCOMO is reportedly still losing subscribers to their rivals and they are blaming limited stock as the reason. According to a report from Reuters, the carrier saw a drop of 66,800 subscribers in the month of September which is a stark contrast to those of KDDI and Softbank who saw an increase in subscribers.

We’re not sure how the other two carriers are enjoying success while NTT DOCOMO isn’t. It is not news that the iPhone 5s is currently experiencing shipping delays due to its production not going as well as it should have, with some blaming the Touch ID sensor as one of the reasons why production is slow and supply is constrained. Either way or the folks at KDDI and Softbank were allocated more units, or NTT DOCOMO underestimated the demand. In any case this is not a short-term solution for the carrier and the benefits will probably show up in the long-run, but for now it does not look like they are off to a good start.

DoCoMo glasses concept turns any surface into a touchscreen

Following DoCoMo’s detailing of its 5G network ambitions, the company has displayed its smart glasses concept here at CEATEC 2013, something that is presently four different glasses concepts that will be unified into a single product offering when it heads into production. The smart glasses offer a variety of functionality, the most interesting of which […]

NTT DoCoMo’s vision of ‘5G’ wireless: 100x faster than LTE, but not until 2020

NTT DoCoMo's vision of '5G' wireless 100x faster than LTE, but unlikely prior to 2020

We knew good and well that Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo would be divulging details about its 5G wireless plans at CEATEC, but the claims that we’ve stumbled upon here in Chiba are nothing short of bananas. Granted, the operator is making clear that its vision isn’t intended to reach implementation until 2020, and it confesses that a 5G standard has yet to be ratified. That said, it’s dreaming of a world where its network offers “1000 times the capacity and 100 times the speed as the current network.”

Representatives for the company told us that the challenge is going to be dealing with range limitations in higher frequency spectrum, but it plans to employ “high-frequency bandwidth by transmitting with a large number of antenna elements.” The goal for looking so far forward? It’s already seeing an insane appetite for video on networks that can barely maintain poise under the load, and the notion of transferring 4K content to the masses is going to require a substantial upgrade. CEATEC’s known as a place that allows companies to dream big and aim for the fences, but we’ll be honest — we’d really, really prefer that 2020 arrived sooner rather than later.

NTT docomo Shows Off A Range Of Working Smart Glass Concepts

NTT docomo Shows Off A Range Of Working Smart Glass Concepts[CEATEC 2013] To say that smart glasses might not end up as the next big thing would be an understatement. After all, there has been plenty of interest surrounding Google Glass in the past, and the folks over at NTT docomo certainly has no intention of missing out on the boat. We managed to get hold of a few smart glasses at the NTT docomo booth today, where the first one of the lot is what Hubert is wearing in the image above. Basically, this pair of smart glasses allows you to watch videos that are being played on your smartphone without having to hold your handset. All that is being played on the smartphone is sent to the smart glasses, and while there were no hard and fast specifications available, it was divulged that it is in all probability, the equivalent of watching an 80” display from 5 feet away. Sweet!
