O2 UK has revealed its 4G LTE plans, giving carrier EE some competition for high-speed data. The new O2 4G service will go live on August 29, initially in London, Leeds, and Bradford, the FT reports, with the three cities being followed by a further ten before the end of 2013, the carrier has promised. BlackBerry is trying really hard to regain some of the market share that it has lost over the years. The company released a couple of new smartphones this year, it is going to release two more in the coming months. Despite that, BlackBerry has lost business in niches it once ruled, such as government departments and agencies. Small and big businesses once relied on BB devices to get their work done. The company might be losing yet another major customer, O2 Germany is reportedly dropping BlackBerry for Windows Phone devices.
An allegedly leaked internal memo is provided as proof to substantiate this report. O2 Germany is said to have moved its sales reps to Nokia Lumia 520s whereas store managers are now believed to have been given Nokia Lumia 925s. By making such a move, the carrier will end up saving as much as $330,000 in BlackBerry enterprise fees. Furthermore, it is said that O2 Germany prefers the integration of Windows Phone with other Microsoft enterprise services. O2 Germany is owned by Telefonica, which also has presence in markets such as UK, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Chile. BlackBerry could be in even more trouble if this trend picks up across all markets. We’ve reached out to all of the usual suspects, and only one of them hasn’t stuck a thumb up and winked when we’ve asked if it’ll be carrying HTC’s “diminutive” new smartphone. O2, EE, Vodafone, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse have all confirmed that they’ll carry the One mini, while ThreeUK has yet to get back to us. There’s no solid information on how much the device will cost on a monthly or one-off basis, but Carphone Warehouse is already accepting sim-free pre-orders for a very plausible £380. That same retailer is also saying that the phone is due to arrive on August 9th, but we’ll take that assertion with a pinch of environmentally-friendly salt.

That 41-megapixel Windows Phone you’ve been hearing all about? Well, despite the NY launch event, it will indeed launch in the UK. In fact, it’ll get here later this quarter. O2 and Three have announced that they’ll be offering the Lumia 1020 in stores and online and while both networks currently aren’t running an LTE service, Three has promised the phone it offers will be Ultrafast ready, broadly meaning it might run on 4G, but it’ll certainly offer up to DC-HSPA speeds at launch. Telefonica, the parent company of O2, has promised that an “exclusive variant of the device” will make an appearance in select European and Latin American markets. More news from the other networks when we hear it.

Is the 4.7-inch HTC One not the right size for your hands? Do Nokia’s latest Lumia phones not appeal to your design sensibilities? Well, a leaked document from O2 Germany lists four unannounced devices reportedly coming out later this year that just might satisfy your very particular tastes. The HTC One Mini is on there (a 4.3-inch phone we’re already well familiar with) as is the One Max, which rumors suggest will have Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and a 5.9-inch 1080p display. Moving on to Nokia, there’s the “Eros,” though that might be a typo for the 41-megapixel “EOS” that’s expected to be announced on the 11th. There’s also the “Mars,” which is the first time we’ve heard that name. Check out the full list after the break.

Microsoft has been pushing to get Windows Phone 8 recognized as the “third ecosystem”, insisting that carriers and consumers alike both want another alternative to iOS and Android, and now it has some vocal support from O2 parent Telefonica. The new announcement promises an “enhanced marketing effort” between the two companies, which will apparently see
O2 Ireland has been sold to Three parent Hutchison Whampoa Group, in an €850m ($1.1bn) deal that will see Three surge in subscribers to around 2m active users. O2 Ireland parent Telefonica described the deal as part of its “proactive management” [pdf link] of its portfolio, with the payment used to offset the carrier’s financial
3DS owners in the UK will have at least one less thing to gripe about starting today: connectivity. Not that the British arm of the gaming giant hasn’t been incredibly proactive about lining up WiFi partners, but the deal struck with O2 grants customers free access at yet another 7,000 hotspots. That includes major chains such as McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee, Debenhams, House of Fraser and Toby Carvery, not mention several major venues and arenas. This expansion of Nintendo’s gratis network keeps DLC and new games within easy reach at almost all times, since the country’s major airports, hotels and a few other fast food chains are already covered. Now Nintendo just needs to strike a deal with a few of the nation’s optometrists. All that extra play time is certainly going to strain a few eyes.
