While it would seem that virtual reality is going a bit social on one side of the equation, the Project Morpheus at Sony continues to gain gaming steam. Here we’re … Continue reading
Facebook is sitting on boatloads of money and the company isn’t afraid to use some of that cash to buy up companies that have interesting tech. Such is the case with a new purchase that sees Facebook buying up Oculus VR, the company behind the slick Oculus Rift VR headset. The purchase reportedly cost Facebook $2 billion (USD).
Many people think the buyout is a bad thing because Facebook is Facebook, and also because selling off the company goes against the independent spirit of the company’s initial funding via Kickstarter. I think the buyout could be a good thing. Facebook certainly has the capital to help Oculus develop low cost VR headsets and other gear, and the reach to bring them to market. Perhaps the purchase will mean that a production rollout will come faster.
Facebook is also a place that many people go to play casual games, and harass others with invites to play games. I could see Facebook working with developers to get casual games on the social network using the Oculus VR device.

We guess it really isn’t a secret anymore that Facebook will be acquiring virtual reality technology company, Oculus VR. In fact this is actually good news for the gaming community and virtual reality technology in general because with Facebook’s backing, Oculus VR will have access to resources that they might not have had before, especially in the face of Sony’s own VR efforts, Project Morpheus.
This line of thinking is also what Oculus’ founder, Palmer Luckey, appears to be thinking of as well in a recent interview that he and Brendan Iribe had with the folks at The Verge recently. According to Luckey, this deal with Facebook will not only provide the company with resources, but at the same time ultimately help to make virtual reality technology cheaper. (more…)
Facebook’s Acquisition Of Oculus Will Make VR Cheaper, Says Oculus Founder original content from Ubergizmo.
It is safe to say that Facebook’s recent (surprising) announcement that they would be acquiring Oculus VR caught many by surprise. After all Facebook has never really expressed that much interest in gaming, save for the Facebook Games feature, not to mention there has not been any indication that Facebook was even remotely interested in the company to begin with.
In fact Facebook’s acquisition of companies like WhatsApp and Instagram made perfect sense since they had to do with communications and social media, but as is the case with most acquisitions, this was not an overnight decision, nor was it an impulsive one either. (more…)

As many have probably heard by now, Facebook recently announced a surprising acquisition of Oculus VR, the company behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. This has big implications not just for Facebook, who will now be expanding into new territory, but also for developers who have/had plans to develop games for the Oculus Rift.
Now according to a recent tweet by Minecraft’s creator, Markus “Notch” Persson, it seems that he did not take the acquisition too well and has since announced the cancellation of Minecraft for the Oculus Rift. “We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out.” (more…)
