Big, curved, and OLED: every year there are some keywords IFA’s prime competitors cling to, and in 2013 LG is leading the pack with its whopping 77-inch Ultra HD Curved OLED TV. Full 4k resolution spread across a near-painfully bright, sweeping pane of OLED technology; does the world need a set so big, so detailed, […]
Clearly, the big thing at IFA 2013 for TV manufacturers this year is curved televisions. So far, we’ve seen curved OLED sets and curved LED TVs at the show. LG has rolled out what it claims to be the world’s largest curved screen OLED TV called simply enough the 77-inch Ultra HD Curved OLED TV. […]
Currently, the biggest curved curved ultra-high resolution OLED TV tops out at a mere 55 inches—but LG is shaking things up with this monstrous 77-inch creature.
LG’s 77-inch Ultra HD curved OLED TV is the biggest, with the most buzzwords (update: eyes-on)
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe never ending battle between Korean manufacturers Samsung and LG has moved to its inevitable next level, as LG has introduced an even larger super high-res OLED than its competitor’s 55-inch models. The new high water mark is this 77-inch Ultra HD curved OLED it’s showing off at IFA 2013, which is a step up in pretty much every way possible and even makes us recall the LCD size wars of the mid ’00s. Whether or not we asked for it, it’s bringing new display technology, a rare shape and of course, that truly outstanding size. It’s only a concept now, but so was the $15,000 55-inch version at one point so we’d suggest keeping your black card handy.%Gallery-slideshow83284%

Last year, Sony brought the HMZ-T2 to IFA and tried to convince us to wear a 3D display helmet; at IFA 2013, the company is hoping that cutting the cord with the new HMZ-T3W will persuade us to open our wallets. As before, the concept is straightforward: two small OLED screens that give the impression […]
Sony: Our 56-inch 4k OLED TV is biggest & brightest (we just can’t make it)
Posted in: Today's ChiliSony is showing off a new prototype 4k Ultra HD OLED TV at IFA 2013, and the company isn’t short on hyperbole about the new set. The 56-inch panel is both brighter and more colorful than either of the OLED TVs on sale from Samsung and LG, Sony told us, as well as being bigger, […]
Samsung’s press conference at IFA 2013 is over and we have more details on the company’s new line of televisions. One of the TVs it was unveiled during the conference was the new 55-inch Curved OLED TV. Samsung says that this new TV delivers an “unprecedented leap forward in picture quality and design” thanks to […]
At Samsung’s press conference it’s bringing some of those extra large Ultra HD TVs it promised at CES, and mentioned something even more tantalizing: a 4K OLED. Unfortunately that last one did not make an appearance on stage, however the company has promised it will be present in its booth for demos tomorrow. We expect that, like the ones shown by Sony and Panasonic at CES, this is just a prototype, but if it’s anywhere near as beautiful as those we can’t wait to see it. As far as products that are actually shipping, Samsung also showed off its 55-inch curved OLED again, as well as the 65-inch F9000 UHD TV. As far as the supersized 4K sets, Samsung is showing off 98-inch and 110-inch models that outsize the 85-inch behemoth it kicked this crazy trend off with back in January. Finally, it’s trying to address the issue of high-res content, with representatives from Eutelsat and TF1 present to talk about the projects they have in the works.
Update: We stopped by big blue’s digs here at IFA to see the sets in action, and they’re as impressive as you might think. Even at such a large size, the resolution doesn’t appear to degrade when compared to their smaller brethren. Naturally, however, you’ll want to stand a few feet away from these behemoths for the optimal viewing experience. Just like the other panels in the line, the TVs produce vibrant colors, strong contrast and crisp visuals. When it comes to overall design, Samsung’s kept the S9 series Timeless Gallery frame, complete with speakers all around its stand — for better or worse.

If you think back to when flatscreen TVs first hit the market one of the things that a lot of people wanted to do was mount them on the wall. The problem with mounting most LCD and plasma TVs on walls is that they’re often too thick and heavy, and most of them just ended up sitting on entertainment centers. Now there are incredibly thin-profile OLED screens coming to market that will definitely be skinny and lightweight enough to hang on the wall like a work of art.
LG has unveiled their new Gallery TV (model 55EA8800) that uses an incredibly thin OLED panel inside of a bezel that looks like a picture frame. The overall effect is of a piece of artwork hanging on the wall inside of a custom frame. That frame does more than just look good, it also hides the television’s speaker system called Canvas Speaker 2.2.
Taking the picture frame effect even further, the TV ships with a gallery mode and preloaded digital images of artworks from famous artists. Buyers can also put their own images and artwork on the TV and have them display in gallery mode as well. Pricing for the TV is unknown at this time, but knowing how much other OLED sets are going for, I’d expect it to be somewhere around $10,000(USD).

While we’re happy just to see a brand new display technology hit the streets, it was shocking to see LG and Samsung kick off the OLED era with curved displays. That’s going to change however, as LG is bringing the 55EA8800 display to IFA 2013 this week with the notable characteristic of having a shape that’s just like every other HDTV. That it’s flat instead of curved also means this is the first wall-mountable OLED TV, and LG is topping off the experience with 2.2-channel “Canvas Speakers” integrated with a faux art mat behind the display itself. The art theme continues with a “Gallery Mode” that displays high res artwork from painters including Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, or ones personal family pictures. There’s no word on pricing yet, but after its German introduction other markets are expected to follow — check after the break for the press release and in the gallery for a few more pictures. %Gallery-slideshow77145%
