Alleged Leaked Olympus E-P5 Photos Surface

Alleged Leaked Olympus E P5 Photos SurfaceThe other day we reported on a rumor that Olympus had a couple of mirrorless cameras coming up, the E-P5 and the E-PL6. Olympus teases new flagship PEN camera, tours it around China on May 11th

Olympus China teases a new flagship PEN camera

Last year, Olympus’ release schedule danced around the E-P3: the camera maker launched the semi-pro OM-D E-M5 and refreshed its smaller PEN bodies, but didn’t touch its original mirrorless form factor. We know the company won’t be forgetting its roots this year, as its Chinese branch has posted a teaser for a next-generation, flagship PEN camera. There are no official details beyond superlatives about “classic” textures and “unprecedented control,” but rumors suggest it will be called the E-P5 (E-P4 skipped due to superstitions) and might be joined by the mid-tier E-PL6. We won’t have long to learn the full story when Olympus is showing off its new PEN in four Chinese cities between May 11th and June 1st — in-person demos require more than just a silhouette, after all.

Olympus rolls out 1080p VH-520 compact digital camera

Olympus has introduced its new VH-520, a compact digital camera offering full 1080p high-definition recording, as well as a variety of other features. Its slim design and colorful options aside, this unit boasts excellent low-light quality due to iHS technology, which is, as the company points out, often only found in larger cameras at higher price points, making it the VH-520′s most appealing feature.

The Olympus VH-520 offers a 14-megapixel CMOS sensor, and utilizes the TruePic V processor, which was first developed for use in digital SLR cameras. Zoom is fairly high at 10x optical zoom with a digital boost to 20x, and image stabilization is achieved in the form of lens-shift. ISO range goes up to 6400, and there’s HDR Backlight Adjustment. The display is a cool 3-inches.

There are also a some decent video recording specs to talk about, including the ability to record in full high definition, as well as High Speed Movie mode, which provides slow motion playback. For sharp videos, there’s also a Multi-motion Move IS mode, and audio is recorded in stereo to provide a soundtrack that is the same quality as its full HD video counterpart.

Finally, images and video can be edited with Magic Filters, which are presets available for photographers to apply effects to recorded and saved content a la Instagram and other similar popular photography apps. The Olympus VH-520 compact digital camera will be available in red, purple, blue, black, and brown in April for €149.99.

Olympus Stylus XZ-10

Olympus Stylus XZ 10Olympus has announced that they will be adding to their X-Series of compact cameras with the Stylus XZ-10, which not only brings about the same features of the company’s flagship Stylus XZ-2, but in a more “stealthy” body. While most cameras are capable of handling low-light situations, the Stylus XZ-10 should do better than some of the competition, especially with its f/1.8 lens at its widest. This will allow photographers to snap photos in low-light scenarios without having to resort to using camera flash which usually results in rather harshly lit photos.

On top of that, the Stylus XZ-10 will come with the ability to adjust your camera settings manually, such as its customizable control ring around the lens that allows for manual adjustment of settings such as aperture, exposure, and etc., giving you more control over the shooting, ISO up to 6400, a 12MP backlit CMOS sensor, and with your images processed by the TruePic VI image processor. The Stylus XZ-10 will also be capable of shooting from 26mm at its widest, to 130mm at its longest with a iZuiko Digital 5x optical zoom lens.

Olympus Denies Reports That They Are Discontinuing Their DSLR Products

Olympus Denies Reports That They Are Discontinuing Their DSLR ProductsWhen it comes to DSLR cameras, big brand names such as Canon or Nikon are typically mentioned, but let’s not forget that there are alternatives out there. Companies such as Pentax, Olympus and Fujifilm have been known to put out pretty decent DSLR cameras, but it seems that a recent report has gotten customers worried that Olympus could be ceasing the production of their DSLR offerings. This report has since been refuted in an official statement released by the company. Olympus also states that they will continue offering DSLR cameras alongside their mirrorless camera range, the PEN series. (you should also read our review of the OMD EM5 micro 3/4 camera)

It seems that this speculation stemmed from an earlier report about Olympus undergoing “extensive business restructuring” in its imaging division, which was on top of the downsizing which has already taken place. We guess there were some folks out there who were worried that this restructuring would mean discontinuing DSLR production, but we guess there was nothing to fear after all! What do Olympus fans think of their DSLR cameras? Would you gladly take one over a Canon or Nikon any day?

Olympus Stylus XZ-10 packs control ring and PEN-like AF, we go hands-on at CP+ (video)

Olympus Stylus XZ10 packs control ring and PENlike AF, we go handson at CP video

We have to say, Olympus has a very compelling point-and-shoot to show off at CP+. The Stylus XZ-10, which launched just this week, includes a small arsenal of features that you wouldn’t normally find on a pocketable cam, including incredibly fast autofocus, a control ring around the lens, a dedicated mode dial and a very sharp (920k-dot) 3-inch LCD. The autofocus is the standout here, however — Olympus describes it as being on-par with its PEN Micro Four Thirds models, and as compacts go, it feels just about as speedy as Sony’s RX100. The 5x, 26-130mm lens offers a maximum aperture range of f/1.8-2.7, which should have you covered in most lighting situations. There’s a 12-megapixel CMOS chip on board, with sensor-shift image stabilization, and support for 1080/30p video as well.

The camera itself feels very much like a premium device, and it’s attractive to boot. There’s no built-in WiFi, which we’ve been seeing embedded with quite a few pocketable models this year, but you can take advantage of some smartphone sharing and editing features if you add on an optional Toshiba FlashAir card. Sadly, there’s still no US pricing to speak of, but Olympus reps here in Japan quoted a retail price of ¥40,000 (about $440), plus tax, when the camera hits stores beginning in February. Take a closer look in our hands-on after the break.
