If you have been following tech news over the past few months you might have heard about a company called OnePlus. Its a new company started by an ex-Oppo executive that going to launch its very first smartphone on April 23rd. The company has built up a lot of hype for OnePlus One and it appears that Chinese manufacturers are getting ready to rain on its parade. At least two manufacturers have lined up announcements on the very day OnePlus One is due to be launched, while one has an announcement lined up for the day before.
OnePlus has boasted a lot about the potential and power of its first smartphone. We can’t reach a verdict yet because it hasn’t shown off the phone as yet, and there’s no way to determine right now how it really performs. Though on paper it will be able to rival the best of them as it touts a Snapdragon 801 2.5GHz processor with 3GB of RAM and a 13 megapixel rear camera.
China’s Xiaomi is due to announce a new product on April 23rd. Rumor has it that the company may announce its Mi3S flagship though nothing can be said for sure right now. ZTE is also going to launch a new product under its Nubia brand come April 23rd but it isn’t known as yet what it plans to unveil.
Huawei is going to make an announcement on April 22nd. It is going to unveil the Honor X1. Either all three want to steal OnePlus’ thunder or this may be the biggest coincidence we’ve seen so far.

OnePlus, a nascent company founded by ex-Oppo executives, still has a lot to prove before it can take a seat at the adult table. The company’s first smartphone, OnePlus One, is due to be launched on April 23rd. It has confirmed a few details about the specifications, but so far hasn’t given us a glimpse of the design or the materials its expected to use. Not wanting HTC to hog the spotlight today, the folks at OnePlus decided to take a swing at the All New HTC One.

The OnePlus One smartphone, which is touted to arrive in the near future for under the $400 mark, has yet to make an official debut, but this does not mean that it has not gone through any benchmarking processes just yet. The OnePlus One has appeared on the AnTuTu benchmark, where one of the more prominent members of the Cyanogen Mod team, who also happen to be the very same people behind the handset’s famous ROM, has already put up a bunch of screenshots alongside how it (well) it does in terms of performance on the popular benchmark. At the end of last month, we brought you word that the OnePlus One smartphone would eventually be priced under the $400 mark, and by saying so, this does not mean that it will be priced near $400, although there is also every chance of that happening. Well, here we are with additional word on the OnePlus smartphone that is tipped to be launched before the first half of the year is over – apparently, the OnePlus One will be made available in 10 countries at launch. Those of us living in the U.S. will be pleased to hear that our country is included in the initial launch list.

Cyanogen is looking to make a name for itself in the mainstream Android smartphone, after ruling the custom ROMs scene for years. The team makes some of the most widely used custom Android ROMs, and while it continues to do that, it has also teamed up with Oppo to release the first ever Google CTS certified CyanogenMod phone. Its not stopping there, it has teamed up with startup mobile manufacturer OnePlus, headed by an ex-Oppo VP, to develop a smartphone that’s built for CyanogenMod from the ground up. The startup announced today that the international release of its first smartphone, OnePlus One, takes place in the second quarter of 2014.

The folks at Cyanogen may have partnered up with Oppo to release the first Google CTS certified CyanogenMod phone, but they’re not stopping there. The team already makes the most widely used custom ROMs for Android devices, now they’re looking to break into the mainstream market. Recently it was announced that Cyanogen’s first hardware partner is a new company called OnePlus that’s headed by ex-Oppo vice president Pete Lau. The company has dropped a few hints about its first CyanogenMod powered device, the OnePlus One, it has pegged the release for the second quarter of 2014.
The company claims to be focusing on design, and it is confident that appearance wise, its phone is “more attractive than just about any phone on the market,” it calls the iPhone an exception. While it hasn’t been revealed what exactly we can expect under the hood, the company has confirmed that this smartphone will be compatible with 4G LTE. It has also revealed that a lightweight iteration of CyanogenMod will power the smartphone, an interation that’s going to be a departure to the familiar CyanogenMod experience we have come to expect on our Android devices. Customized features and new elements have been promised for the OnePlus One. The company is yet to talk about pricing and availability, so we’ll have have to wait and see how this project ultimately turns out.

Is there a perfect smartphone somewhere out there? I know, since 2007, there have been many who would have sworn by the fact that the iPhone could have been the perfect smartphone, while over the years, fans of the Android platform too, have their fair share on what the perfect Android-powered device is. Well, Pete Lau who stepped down as VP of Chinese electronics maker Oppo, has recently announced that he will be staking out in a brand new venture that he has called OnePlus.
This is in line with previous rumors about Lau leaving Oppo in order to start a company of his own. OnePlus is a venture that carries the promise to spare not a single cent when it comes to constructing the perfect smartphone. Other than Lau’s announcement to make the “best possible product for users worldwide”, there was no mention of any operating system either, although it has been speculated that CyanogenMod will be working on a new smartphone with the man himself. There were also other whispers that point toward Oppo being the manufacturer of this new smartphone. I personally would have liked to see a different name other than OnePlus, as it seems to be too close to HTC’s very own HTC One smartphone in terms of naming convention.
