Udacity launches Open Education Alliance to help modernize university curriculums
Posted in: Today's ChiliUdacity’s first partnership with an institution of higher learning might not have turned out as well as it hoped, but a setback at San Jose State University won’t cause the online learning portal to call it quits on college campuses. Quite the contrary, in fact. Today, Udacity announced the creation of the Open Education Alliance to “bridge the gap between the skills employers need and what traditional universities teach.” The alliance is comprised of both Silicon Valley heavyweights like Google, AT&T and NVIDIA and educators including Georgia Tech and Khan Academy. The OEA’s goal is to enlist the help of both companies and educators in building a new curriculum to help students learn what they need to choose and succeed in a modern career.
Here at TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013, Udacity CEO Sebastian Thrun and California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom discussed the need for a shift in our educational system, and consequently the OEA. “It’s important to be creative about this,” said Thrun, “we need to move away from an ‘industry of drones’ by enabling students to learn at their own speed.” Naturally, accomplishing this task requires a combination of Udacity’s online learning tools to give folks on-demand access to learning materials they need and a physical classroom environment to keep students on task. According to Newsom, “It’s not mass education anymore, it’s personalized.”

Free Online ToDo List Manager
Posted in: Today's ChiliThis article was written on November 13, 2012 by CyberNet.
I have always been a huge fan of using text-based todo lists to help manage the things that I need to get done. The reason I’ve chosen to use a text-only todo list is the simplicity of being able to update and organize items the way I need to. The free Holly web app is catering heavily to everyone that falls under the same umbrella as me.
With Holly you get the best of all worlds: the ease of managing your todo list using a text-only format while getting a UI that looks like a traditional todo list. As you can see in the screenshot above this looks like your typical todo list app, but underneath it’s just a text-based list that you can update. You can also see some special formatting for things such as tags, and you can also see the green letters labeled “5d” and “2d” which represents how many days you have left until the deadline.
So how do you edit this todo list? If you click on any of the items in the list you will see the associated text for that particular task and all others at the same level and below. That means if you click on one of the topmost items in the list you should see everything, and for the example in the screenshot above this is what the associated text looks like:
Pretty cool, huh? They developed a simple and elegant way to transform a simple block of text into a beautifully formatted todo list. With that example you can also see how they assign due dates and use tags to make finding items even faster.
Take a look at some of the features highlighted by the developer:
- Edit pure text
Edit your tasks with the most powerful input method that exists – a simple text editor. - Nested TODO lists
Tasks are mini-projects with their own sub-tasks, which you can track in lists of lists. Quickly re-arrange items with drag’n’drop. - Keyboard controlled
Everything you can do in Holly you can do with either a keyboard or a mouse. There are hotkeys for everything. - Collaborate
Share lists with your coworkers, friends and family. No sign up required. - All your tasks, everywhere
Access your tasks from any browser. Holly also works great on your iPhone or Android device.
I highly recommend giving this a try if you haven’t already. It’s a great free service that doesn’t even require an account for you to use it.

EA’s Peter Moore clarifies stance on online games, says not every title will require your console to be online
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhile discussing the finer points of EA’s plans for this year (and those new consoles), EA’s Peter Moore explained to Engadget that the games maker doesn’t ship a game that is offline. It seems some people took this and ran (and ran) with it. So much in fact, that Moore has decided to officially respond, detailing that while its games catalog connects through online multiplayer, stat sharing, achievements or can even be delivered to consoles and devices by the internet, the company will continue to include single-player and offline modes that can be played without any need for a data connection — not every EA game will require your console to be online. We’ve embedded the aforementioned interview from Gamescom after the break. If only Mr. Moore still had the chance to respond with a YouTube video of his own…

Last year, Bethesda announced that its sister company, Zenimax Online Studios, would be making Elder Scrolls Online, much to the joyful proclamations of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim fans. At the time, it was only known that it would be coming around in 2013, and now as the time draws near, Bethesda has revealed that […]
Gamers have been choking lately on some of the restrictive DRM for upcoming consoles and titles, but at least EA is offering some relief. It just announced that its Origin store now features the “great game guarantee,” letting you return downloaded games after purchasing. You’ll have 24 hours to send it back, digitally speaking, after you first launch the game, or seven days from the date of purchase (or release date for pre-orders). By contrast, Steam offers no refunds or exchanges on any of its games. Origin’s new policy is now available in 20 countries, but only applies to EA-published games and not downloadable content. There’s also a clause for any “abuse of the refund process,” so if you’re looking to see how many games you can beat in a day, you may wanna rethink that.

“Here’s where it all happens for Apple developers” reads the tagline, but that’s not been the case for much of the last few weeks. This morning, Apple’s advising that its developer centre is now fully restored, after being taken offline due to intruder attempts. Hopefully for real this time. In any case, Cupertino’s offering up a month’s extended membership in return for the inconvenience, as outlined in the official statement past the break. Now, back to it…
