Oregon Scientific's Meep! X2 kid's tablet gets gutted at the FCC

Since it’s been nearly a year since Oregon Scientific’s MEEP! kiddy tablet arrived on the scene, it makes sense that we’re due for a refresh. We did see a listing for the MEEP! X2 pop up earlier this month, but the device’s arrival at the FCC is the first concrete sign that the slate will arrive stateside. The documents reveal that the unit packs a microSD slot, HDMI-out, Bluetooth 3.0 and 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, while French site Maginea claims that it will feature a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A9 CPU, a 7-inch 800 x 480 display, 1 GB RAM and 4GB of built-in storage. Naturally, we can’t confirm the legitimacy of those last specs, so enjoy this gallery of teardown images instead. %Gallery-slideshow76557%

Time & Wireless Charging Station

Everyone should own some sort of bedside clock to help them keep time whenever they snooze late into the morning, or just to know at what bewitching hour they keep on getting up at night, as though there was some sort of spiritual force oppressing them, so that they can share all the details with the visiting exorcist. Well, other than that, just simply having a clock is a must for any home, as time and tide wait for no man, so keeping the correct time always is essential. Better yet, why not if your time keeping machine also has more than one basic functionality built in, like the Time & Wireless Charging Station?

This smart clock will do far more than just tell you the time, as it will also come with a weather station, projection clock as well as charger that does things the wireless way. Basically, it will play nice with Qi-enabled wireless devices, now how about that? This radio-controlled clock will depict the indoor temperature and boast of a 5-channel outdoor temperature display, sporting a 2-minute crescendo and 8-minute snooze alarm function, and a magnet-free charging pad that paves the way for greater freedom of placement for devices while charging. Sounds like the ideal way to usher 2013, no?

A Sports Cam With Eyes On the Back of Its Head Captures Twice the Action

Now here’s a unique take on the seemingly unending supply of action sports cams hitting the market. Oregon Scientific’s ATC Chameleon packs a pair of adjustable lenses on the front and back of the camera with 110-degree fields of view. So athletes can share what’s happening behind the camera, as well as what’s in front. More »

ATC Chameleon Dual-Lens Action Cam is Like Having Two GoPros for the Price of One (Sorta.)

Between GoPro, Contour, Drift and several others, the market for digital action camcorders has gotten mighty saturated. So with all the competition out there, how do you make your action cam stand out from the crowd? Well, you could do what Oregon Scientific has done with their new ATC Chameleon.

atc chameleon camera

This unusual action camera has a unique feature in that it has a pair of moving lenses which allow it to simultaneously capture two angles at the same time. It can record two different 170° views at the same time, so you can capture a total 340° field of vision. This allows you to see the action from more than one viewpoint on a single split-screen video. In addition, each lens can be moved up to 180° – one moves side-to-side, and the other moves up and down. Just flip a switch to choose between side-by-side or top-and-bottom video modes.

The camera offers 1080p resolution from each lens, however, the FAQ states that you’ll probably need to work with the video in 720p. According to my math, two 720p images side-by-side is 2560×720, so they must have to do some funny business with black bars and downscaling to get that to fit into either a 720p or 1080p video. Still, it looks like a pretty cool way to capture more than one angle without having to splurge for two cameras.

Oregon Scientific offers a wide a variety of optional mounts – most of which sell for $29.99 – which make it easy to attach the camera to vehicles, helmets, surfboards, handlebars and more – however, the camera itself doesn’t include any of these. While the camera is splashproof, you’ll also have to spend extra if you want the waterproof case. That said, the ATC Chameleon is priced at just $199(USD), so it’s pretty reasonable to begin with. It’s available for order now over on the Oregon Scientific website.

Oregon Scientific MEEP! tablet ships for $150, gives kids a safe, exclamation-filled place to play

Oregon Scientific MEEP! tablet ships for $150, gives kids a safe, exclamationfilled place to play

For all the enthusiasm Oregon Scientific put into launching (and naming) its MEEP! tablet, the company has been a bit timid about getting the kid-friendly Android device into the market — we’re just seeing it go on sale eight months after it was first shown to the world. Now that the slate is here, it may be worth the patience from parents. The 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 chip, 512MB of RAM, 800 x 480 screen and 4GB of storage won’t have the adults regretting their Kindle Fire purchases, but the MEEP! does come in a smash-resistant form with remote parental control and an allowance-based store that lets kids ‘buy’ apps with virtual coins. Oregon helps its case through the use of Ice Cream Sandwich, preloaded games like Angry Birds and a raft of accessories for games and music. The $150 asking price is just low enough that we can see a few families starting their youngest technophiles on a MEEP! before graduating them to bigger, badder tablets with less punctuation in the name.

So your little one also wants to be like daddy and mummy, craving for a tablet of his or her own and throwing a tantrum that would even irritate the ears of Zeus on Mt. Olympus, what do you as a parent do? Do you give in, or do you place your foot down and show your kid just who is boss? Well, for folks who feel that it is time for their kids to have a tablet of their own, here we are with the MEEP! tablet from Oregon Scientific.

The MEEP! tablet will carry with it cutting edge technology, durability, and interactive content, all crammed into a design which was specially formulated just for kids in addition to being accompanied by a full line of action-packed accessories. Sporting a 7-inch display, the MEEP! tablet will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (no idea on whether there will be a Jelly Bean update on the way or not), carrying with it Wi-Fi connectivity while ensuring it remains the most rugged and durable tablet on the market – for kids, at least.

Games, books, videos and apps that are available in the MEEP! store have all been certified to be kid-friendly by Oregon Scientific, where it is either free or can be purchased using MEEP! coins. You can also opt to access Google Play from the Parents Portal to purchase additional content. Other hardware specifications include 4GB of internal storage and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes, in addition to to an integrated front-facing camera and HDMI connectivity.

Just how much will the MEEP! tablet cost? Well, we do know that it is specially geared for kids who are aged 6 and above, and is currently available at mass market retailers and online stores, retailing for $149.99 a pop. It will not come with its fair share of accessories right out of the box as you will need to fork out money for those. At least it is packed with a charger, a USB cable and a quick start guide to help you use it right there and then without missing a beat.
